12th Ordinary Time ~ Through a series of opposite words, the Gospel reveals the world (kingdom) of Jesus and the world into which he sends his disciples. He counters the fear and limitations of that world with the hope, vision and grace of his world (kingdom): concealed/revealed; secret/known; darkness/light; whispered/proclaimed; kill body/cannot kill soul; small coin/worth more. The difference between each of these pairs of words might make anyone afraid if it were not for the fact that someone great is ‘on our side’. Jesus makes it

quite clear that we are not alone and that there is a sustaining, protective and life giving love upon which we can depend. Jesus speaks directly and forcefully as to what we can expect. “Fear no one. Do not be afraid. Even the hairs of your head are counted. I will acknowledge (you) before my Father. Do not be afraid.” There are a few spiritual and emotional realities that can completely paralyze a person. Among the strongest of these is fear. When one becomes afraid of anyone or anything, very often they cannot summon up the courage to accomplish what they want or need to do. In the face of fear they become helpless and hopeless. Jesus understood this well. He counseled to trust and to know deep within our spirit the faithful love of God our Father. He repeated so many times within his gospel message the same words: ‘fear not’. These words of Jesus take on so much more power when one knows the end of the story. The disciples were to face martyrdom because they proclaimed the kingdom of God ‘from the roof tops’. The cost of discipleship is great. The rewards are even greater. Fear is one of the only things that can prevent one from trusting fully in the ultimate saving power of God. It is, therefore, trust in God’s love and care for us that will ultimately encourage us to stand up even in the face of persecution. This is at the heart of what Jesus proclaimed so explicitly in the Beatitudes: “Blessed are those persecuted for holiness’ sake; the reign of God is theirs. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of slander against you because of me. Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is great in heaven.” We take it to heart and find encouragement and hope in Jesus command: “Fear no one. Do not be afraid!

KICK OFF ST. BERNARD’S FEAST!

AUGUST 13, 2017 — 9:00a.m. TO 5:00pm

ONE DAY FIESTA CELEBRATION

This year, St. Bernard Church will begin with

a Community Multi-cultural one day fiesta to

kick off the week-long celebration. We will have multi-cultural

food, games, and entertainment. During the week, there will

be a variety of liturgical celebrations which are to be

announced. The week – long celebration will culminate with

our annual St. Bernard’s Luau on Saturday, August 19. The

Luau will feature for your palate delicious Hawaiian food,

Hawaiian Dancers, prizes and an evening of Dancing under

the Hawaiian stars. Please plan to join us for these festivities.

TOGETHER IN MISSION 2017

If you have not made a pledge for Together in Mission, you are invited to do so. This is one

opportunity to assist the poorest parishes and schools

in our archdiocese and help support the opportunity for

growth of faith amongst our brothers and sisters in

Christ. Envelopes and brochures are available at the

doors of the church. Thanks!

"I Love St. Bernie" Financial Report: June 18th — the 1st "I love St. Bernie" Collection.

Last Sunday we took up the '$10' second collection to supplement our General Fund and slowly strengthen

our Reserve Fund. Over time we expect to strengthen our financial health and also to build up our emergency funds. This first collection brought in $2,741 — thank you to all who participated!!!

PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION — NEXT WEEKEND

This is a World Wide Collection done by all churches

to offer to our Holy Father. A fund by which he is

able to offer financial assistance throughout the

world as a sign of the churches charitable giving in

times of emergency and great need. If everyone

gives even a little, this will surely be a sizable gift we

give to the Pope. Please be generous on next week’s collection!

12° Tiempo Ordinario ~ A través de una serie de palabras opuestas, el Evangelio revela el mundo (reino) de Jesús y el mundo en el que envía a sus discípulos. Contrarresta el temor y las limitaciones de ese mundo con la esperanza, la visión y la gracia de su mundo (reino): oculto/revelado; secreto/ conocido; oscuridad/luz; susurrado/proclamado; matar al cuerpo/no mata el alma; pequeña moneda/

mayor valor. La diferencia entre cada uno de estos pares de palabras podría causar miedo si no fuera por el hecho de que alguien muy grande está ‘de nuestro lado’. Jesús deja muy en claro que no estamos solos y que hay un amor que sustenta, protege y da una vida de la cual podemos depender. Jesús habla directamente y con fuerza de lo que podemos esperar. "No teman a los hombres. No tengan miedo. Hasta los cabellos de su cabeza están contados. Los reconoceré ante mi Padre. No tengan miedo". Hay algunas realidades espirituales y emocionales que pueden paralizar completamente a una persona. Entre las más fuertes está el miedo. Cuando alguien se asusta de alguien o algo, a menudo no puede reunir el valor para lograr lo que quiere o necesita hacer. Ante el temor se vuelven indefensos y desesperanzados. Jesús lo entendió bien. Aconsejó confiar y conocer profundamente dentro de nuestro espíritu el amor fiel de Dios, nuestro Padre. En su mensaje del Evangelio repitió muchas veces las mismas palabras: ‘no teman’. Estas palabras de Jesús toman tanto más poder cuando uno conoce el final de la historia. Los discípulos se enfrentarían al martirio porque proclamaron el reino de Dios ‘desde las azoteas’. El costo del discipulado es grande. La recompensa es aún mayor. El miedo es una de las únicas cosas que pueden impedir que uno confíe plenamente en el supremo poder salvador de Dios. Es, por lo tanto, la confianza en el amor de Dios y el cuidado de nosotros que en última instancia, nos dará el valor para levantarnos aún de cara a la persecución. Esto está en el corazón de lo que Jesús proclamó tan explícitamente en las Bienaventuranzas: "Bienaventurados los perseguidos por causa del bien, porque de ellos es el Reino de los Cielos. Bienaventurados cuando por causa mía los maldigan, los persigan y les levanten toda clase de calumnias. Alégrense y muéstrense contentos porque será grande la recompensa que recibirán en el cielo". Nosotros lo tomamos en serio y encontramos aliento y esperanza en el mandato de Jesús: “No teman a los hombres. ¡No tengan miedo!

UN DÍA DE GRAN CELEBRACIÓN — Este año, la Iglesia de San Bernardo comenzará con una fiesta comunitaria multi-cultural de un día para dar inicio a la celebración de una semana. Vamos a tener comida multicultural, juegos y entretenimiento. Durante la semana, habrá una variedad de celebraciones litúrgicas que serán anunciadas. La celebración de una semana culminará con el Luau nuestro San Bernardo anual el Sábado,19 de agosto.
