There is an old saying which says, "The older I get the less I know." In my case, the older I get, I realize that there is so much I just do not understand. For instance, at one time I think I had a theory on the meaning of life. Now I'm not so sure. Last week my sister passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was just 66 years old. She was too young. She was a good person. Life might not have been particularly easy for her and when she reached a point in her life when it was finally going to become easier, she was hit with breast cancer. She was a religious person, and over the years we had many conversations regarding her faith and these talks did have an influence on me. And when she was going through the chemo and all the other crap that this disease brings, she prayed even harder. Eight years later, her prayer was answered, although by this time it was a much different prayer than what she started with. Never smoked, never drank and was all about family. I understand that it is in the genes but it doesn't make much difference.
Someone said once that when you look at an obit and see the year of birth to the year of death, our life is measured in the dash. Sounded brilliant to me at the time, but now as I get older, I don't know. Everybody who lives, dies. I'm guessing there is easily a trillion (maybe more) deaths in the history of our world. And each one of those people have a dash. When viewed that way, it all seems so pointless. So how should we look at this?
I think we should look at this more from a micro vs macro view. It's your dash. What are you going to do with it? I know I preach this a lot, but it's in the way you view it. I wrote a letter to my sister a few days before she passed. Basically a goodbye letter. I knew from past conversations that she believed in an afterlife. So rather than focusing on the end, I told her there were things I needed to share with her before she left on her journey. And that's the way I want to think about it. She was a piano teacher who was my first instructor when I was 6. She bought me a turtle for Christmas one year and took me to Mary Poppins. She also locked me out of the house and finked on me more than anyone else in my life. I'm really going to miss her.
