I’m going to a concert next week. Bob Seger. I decided a while back that I missed going to concerts and was going to make an effort to go to more. Before Christmas, I saw Elvis Costello at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Thoroughly enjoyed it. And now Bob Seger and then ELO in May and Mark Knopfler in September. I also noticed that there are opportunities to see The Rolling Stones, The Who and Elton John coming up this year. Farewell tours, I think. I believe this might be The Who’s fifth last tour. Doubt that I’ll go to any of these shows.

I saw The Rolling Stones 25 years ago in Edmonton, and in a stadium with 60,000 other people, you could see, in the distance, kind of, little figures running around, but had to depend upon the big screen above the stage to see the players. For me, sadly, it was a huge letdown and the only thing I got out of it was to be able to say, “I’ve seen the Stones.” I’ve seen Elton John, as well, and 30 years ago he was very good. I’m sure he still is, so perhaps from any of these bands, I might go to him.

The Who are old - there’s only 2 guys left from the original band and quite frankly, I was never a huge Who fan. Everyone’s old, by the way. The bigger issue is the price of tickets. To get a decent seat, the ticket is typically over $100 and dependant on the performer, ticket prices go even higher. And I get it. Touring offsets the loss of royalties. It just means one has to be choosy. For me, the choice is to pick a performer I like. Versus one I don’t. And in between times, I’m off to watch the great entertainment here in White Rock.

BRUCE’S CORNERBC ARTIST HIGHLIGHT :

Stephanie Pedraza is a unique combination of singer, songwriter, flamenco dancer and cantaora (traditional flamenco singing) based in Vancouver BC. Born in to a Latin American family and having moved to Colombia at a very early age, she has been constantly immersed in her Latin roots of song and dance. It was at the age of 19 that she fell in love with flamenco, and ever since, has dedicated her life to mastering the art. In 2003 she moved to Andalucia, Spain, after a 4 year intensive training period at Vancouver's Centro Flamenco with Rosario Ancer. It was in Sevilla where she trained intensively both in singing and dancing at the world renowned Fundacion de Arte Flamenco Cristina Heeren. She has studied with some of the most prominent figures in flamenco such as:  Milagros Menjibar, Fuensanta "La Moneta", Sonia Miranda, Joaquin Grilo, El Farru, Olga Pericet, Isabel Bayon, Andres Peña, and David Hornillo to name a few. Her original musical compositions are an honest  reflection of her rich Latin American background, of her experience growing up in Cali-Colombia and a perfect blend of traditional latin rhythms, root, rock, pop as well as English and Spanish lyrics.

Over the past decade, Stephanie has toured extensively and taught workshops across Canada and internationally in countries such as Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Guatemala and USA. In 2014 she had the opportunity to open for legendary Latin songstress Ana Gabriel at the Estadio Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia with an audience of 25,000 people. Among her numerous performances, some highlights include: Festival de Artes Escenicas del Gran Caribe in Cartagena, Colombia, Noche Flamenca Colombia Flamenco Tour, Expolatino Calgary , The Harmony Arts Festival, Cultural Blast,  numerous shows thoughout the years for the Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary International Flamenco Festival, "Alma Vieja" flamenco production in Guatemala, and the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Catch the Stephanie Pedraza Trio perform at MIXT Lounge at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel in Surrey on Saturday February 16.

STEPHANIE PEDRAZA

Well Bob Dylan has always been at or near the top of my list ever since I discovered him while in my younger days. There was something a bit different about him alright. He had songs that were rich in lyrical content that were able to detail and penetrate deeply. He was well known for that, more than his singing or musicianship, which accompanied his words. He has changed over the years. His voice changed, his style changed, while his consistency wavered. Dylan has amassed a huge body of work that was released to the public over a few decades, starting with his first album in 1962.

Bob started out playing rock ’n roll in his teens before becoming greatly affected by folk music and to some degree blues. He made his way to the streets of Greenwich Village in NYC, almost 20 years old, where he learned from many a guitar player ’n poet and in not so long a time had his own crowd of admirers, followed soon-after with a record contract. He was more an album man than a hitmaker. His songs were often made popular by other artists. The most famous example would probably be Jimi Hendrix’s version of All Along The Watchtower.

Dylan still periodically releases recordings and performs live. I was able to see him live 4 or 5 times throughout the years. A couple of biographical sources that I re-visited recently were the 208 minute Martin Scorsese film, "Bob Dylan: No Direction Home" and Dylan’s autobiography titled, "Chronicles: Volume One". Both go into fine detail about the beginnings of his journey. The film features many of the people who were around him in his early years. He’ll be hitting the road this year with his band for a European tour.

The old troubadour is still with us!

All I can be is me - whoever that is.

You can never be wise and be in love at the same time.
