There is a song for everything.  Obviously the topic “love” covers the largest category.    I mean, I can think of songs about being in love, not being in love, not being loved,  loving someone else, having your heart broken, mending the same heart, etc.  In fact, The Beatles maintained that as the common theme in each of their careers.  And seriously, if they were singing about devil worship, protestation and hate I doubt they would have achieved near the notoriety they did, although I'm sure the tune would have been catchy. Pets.  I can't imagine how many love songs are about someone's dog.  Fact: Both the song "Martha" and "Jet" were about a McCartney dog.  In the seventies, there was a song about a dog named "Shannon" that loved to swim away.  Always pictured her as a black lab who went for a swim in the ocean and never turned around.  I've heard songs about the St. Valentines Day massacre (The Night Chicago Died circa mid-seventies) to Kung Fu fighting.  Springsteen did a good job of writing songs for the average blue collar working guy and Joe Walsh wrote a song about success and excess (Life's Been Good).  The Eagles wrote about a hotel and the Rolling Stones wrote about the disappointment of getting No Satisfaction.  The Who wrote a song about a kid who could sure shoot a good game of pinball, while John Lennon wrote a song about imaging peace on earth.  So there is literally a song about everything, but just not enough about bodily functions and used car salesmen and golfing.

The Doors were one of the great American rock bands of the late 60s and early 70s. A band that lasted for only six studio albums but who have maintained a steady high popularity and following ever since. They were brought up in the influence of American Jazz and Blues that cultivated their unique sound that was only enhanced deeper by the poetry, theatrics and physical allure of their lead singer, Jim Morrison.

Jim aka "The Lizard King" was at the centre of the Doors story. The spotlight was mostly on him and myths upon stories abound of him. Some of a Hollywood-exaggerated nature and some that reveal a glimpse of his true artistic soul self.

BRUCE’S CORNER

THE DOORS by D.M. White

There have been many books on the subject of the Doors. Recently, I re-read a couple of auto-biographies by band members, John Densmore (drums) and Ray Manzarek (keyboards). Both books give a first-hand narrative of their lives in music, the changes and events occurring in the sixties and a heap of insight and experiences with their famous lead singer. Excess, experimentation, meditation, youth, rebellion, and of course the creating of their music are some of the subjects touched upon.

If you are interested in the Doors story from an inside perspective then I would recommend either of these books.
