FP NEWSLETTER

I lost my phone for a period of time recently, and until found, I had not felt so lost, alone and frightened for years.  Possibly the scariest 6 minutes of my life.  It is amazing how that phone has become such an essential  part of my life.  My contacts, my calendar, my source for news, music, photo album and even an instrument in which I can call and talk to people.  Imagine leaving your phone at a friend’s place.  When you find someone who allows you to borrow their phone in order to call your friend to get your phone back, you can’t, because you don't know their number because it's on your phone which is at their house.  For the sake of argument, we will assume that the batteries wore down on my phone.  So I started thinking about how we got into such a place - SO dependent upon a phone.  When I was younger, the phone was attached to the kitchen wall with a rotary dial and a long curly cord that could almost reach to the sink.  Each upgrade was a major event in our lives. Eventually, push buttons replaced the rotary dial and the phones came in different colours.  I remember a few of my friends were allowed to have their own phone with their own phone number in their bedroom.  I thought this was a good idea, even though I didn't really have anyone to talk to, and asked my parents for my own phone.  The response was the same as when I asked for a rabbit and a swimming pool.

Eventually the phone became portable so that you could wander around the house while talking away.  I remember the reception was better if the antenna was up.  Eventually, a Motorola brick, and recently, the smart phone.  But wait.  There's more.  WE started out with our fingers and toes, went to an abacus, to a slide-rule, to a Texas Instrument calculator that even calculated sines and tangents to one that was solar powered, then Nintendo, PC and Apple until our computer now fits into our pocket.  More?  Okay.  The record became the eight track which became the cassette which gave way to CDs and  now we stream our music on our phones.    We started communicating with pen, paper and the post office.  Emails.  Now we text on our phones.  When I was a kid, when I left the house there was no contact until I returned.  Seriously, can you imagine that now?  I heard recently that there is this app you can get on your phone which tracks how many times a day you look at it.  The average person picks up their phone 80 times a day.  Isn't that insane?  The world is advancing awfully quickly.  It's actually kind of scary.  At times it just seems to be out of control.  Mind you, it's kind of cool to have hi fi and hi def and to stream music, although I worry that they, whoever they are, are controlling my likes and dislikes.  What's kind of funny is I just lost my phone again.  Gotta go before the withdrawal starts.

Boy, to have been in Athens back in the day.. or maybe even today. Athens is about an hour’s northeast drive of Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is said to have been named after the more larger and more well known city in Greece. The small city makes a pretty picture with it’s  Antebellum architecture and close proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Home to the University of Georgia, Athens has always boasted a young population and a thriving college music scene. Amongst many others, both the B-52s and R.E.M. got their start there. Athens was not just a city of students and music but also of painters, poets, culinary BBQ joints and just about any other kind of creative spirits. Some speak of good-natured oddball eccentrics as well.

Athens, GA - Inside Out by D.M. White

The documentary film “Athens, GA - Inside Out" is a time-piece of Athens in the mid 1980s. A quirky but fun little film covering much of the music and  some of the happenings and characters that made up the city at that time. Back before R.E.M. and the B-52s became big and spoilt. Back when artist and baptist minister Howard Finster designed album covers and produced his folk art sculpture garden called "Paradise Garden".

You can find out more about this small richly creative place in the film “Athens, GA - Inside Out”. It should be out there somewhere.
