Meeting 833 – 26 February 2015

This week’s meeting was advertised as a Mystery Night, and it lived up to its name with an evening of TV Trivia where the correct

answers to the TV Trivia Quiz questions proved to be quite elusive to many.

Quiz mistress Glenda had selected TV shows from the distant past (around the 1960’s). Many members complained that they did

not even have TV’s then. A few owned up to having had a black and white set, and one member recalled going to the neighbour’s

house to watch shows in colour!!

Of course with re-runs of the older shows, most members could recall having seen them at some time and some of the details

about them, but the clever design of the questions still left room for a lot of creative thinking (also called guessing) by those

present. The photos of the night reflect part of the story. Some teams even took to singing the theme songs of shows in order to

gain some extra (and much needed) points. The end result saw the team with 26 points winning on the night, with comments

about miss-spent youth and too much leisure time spent in front of the box coming from teams with lesser scores. A couple of

teams came close with scores of 23 and the rest fell away to the lowest score of 8 for the night. The winners got chocolates, but

then again so did everyone else.

All up, a fun evening and Glenda received appropriate accolades for pulling it all together. Rumour has it that Glenn and Glenda

have all the shows in their home library and watch them regularly.

The Business end of the meeting

President Paul welcomed Liz (Miller) as a guest for the evening. Liz was standing in for Bruce who was an apology.

Other apologies included Chilly, Carolyn, and Anton, with David B and Ian W on LoA.

President Paul apologised for missing last week’s meeting, but he had to attend an Air Force reunion for 4 days! He advised he

had a good time, at least what he can remember of it. Pres Paul thanked the members involved with the Queanbeyan Relay for

Life for their sterling efforts. He also asked all members to note the dates of District Assembly (18/19 April) and hoped that many

would attend.

Secretary Glenn and Treasurer Jon had nothing of consequence to report.

International and Club Service had no reports.

On Community Jan asked that those who would like to assist with the Kokoda Career Night BBQ on 12 March speak directly with

Mez. Jan also requested all members to note that the Southcare Open day was on Sunday March 29th

.

Youth Director Peter described Hannah as our very own Layne Beachley in recognition of her surfing prowess (see last issue of

the Jerraganda). Peter also read out an email received from our overseas exchange student Will, after his first month in the

States. (See next page for email).

Hey Peter,

I have been up to a lot lately including skiing, touring and catching up with some great people!

I just got back from my third ski trip and tried snowboarding for the first time (really fun!). The weather here

is really cold and guess what, no school tomorrow due to snow! I'm going sledding with some friends so I

really can't wait!

My classes are also going well. I am doing biology, drama, photography, English, geometry, US government

and wood work. I have some of the best teachers in the school making for a good time.

My family here is also great, they are phillieno [sic] so I get the best of both worlds! They have two children,

Jeremy and Maya (13 and 9) I get along really well with them.

Overall it has been a great first month and hope to hear from you!

Peter feels that Will may have meant to write Philippino when referring to his host family.

In General Business Liz (Miller) mentioned the upcoming Harman Legacy Charity Ball (see Ad this issue) and advised she is

happy to organise a table/tables, if people are interested in supporting the event.

Chris Hunter mentioned a special school assembly and tribute to ANZAC which will be held on 2 April. This event will pay a

special tribute to recently passed Captain Bede Tongs and the Governor General has been invited to attend. The event is on

early in April as several members of the school are departing to Gallipoli for ANZAC services later in the month.

The night’s Joker draw was won by Vera/Alex with the 2 of Clubs being drawn and the Joker living to fight another day.

Attendance was reported as 92/% - but we did not see any Port or Bailey’s come out – what happened there Mr President??

There were no markets on 28th

February due to the Canberra Show.

Business as usual resumes on Saturday 7 March and members rostered on for market duty are reminded all the usual market materials will be found in the container behind the office (due to the office having been vacated for the Show.

Where’s Hannah?

This past weekend Hannah did Sydney. Well at least some of the best bits of Sydney.

Two and a half tightly packed days from Friday through to Sunday, saw Hannah visit the Sydney Aquarium, Taronga Zoo, Lunar

Park and the Rocks Markets, while also squeezing in a tour of the Opera House and a few trips back and forth across the Harbour

Bridge and stopping for a few ‘feeds’ along the way including sampling saltwater crocodile, emu and kangaroo pizzas at one of

Sydney’s iconic heritage hotels, the Australian, and Devonshire tea at “the Tea Cosy” café in the Rocks and a ferry trip out to

Manly and back across the harbour. The photos tell the story.

Under water at the aquarium Hannah got up close and personal with many fish, including some

rather large sharks, mantra rays and Dugongs. Pictured left are Sue and Hannah taking a rest

from the activities.

Taronga Zoo always impresses, and Hannah found a few friends along the

way. Pictured right, a Joey came up to say hello and pictured below left

Hannah found a friendly Koala for a quick

hug.

At Hannah’s request, Sue tracked down a

venue providing some very native

Australian food. At the Australian heritage

Hotel in the Rocks area, Hannah was able

to sample saltwater crocodile, kangaroo,

and emu.

A night time visit to Lunar Park finished off

one of the busy days (see right).

It was not all pub food; Hannah did get to

practice drinking tea while enjoying scones,

jam and cream, at one of the Rocks café’s

Devonshire Teas. Note the positioning of

the little finger in the photo to the left.

Hannah also enjoyed a cruise across the harbour on the ferry out

to Manly and back. While in Manly both the harbour side and

ocean side beaches were explored and ice cream was consumed

while the sun set.

Naming Competition

Last week’s naming competition has been extended a further two weeks – apparently members and readers need more time to

think of suitable names for our Hero. At the time of going to print this week we have three entries, and several promises. Come-

on folks it can’t be that hard. See details below on how to win the competition and gain ‘bragging rights’ .

On the Australia Day long weekend there were quite a few parties and BBQ’s around the

Jerrabomberra Suburb. At one particular event that followed the Jerrabomberra Rotary

Community Breakfast event a new ‘Super Hero’ was spotted. Always on the lookout for news

worthy pictures, and with a subject that was more than happy to pose for a photo, one of the

Jerraganda roaming photographers was able to capture this picture.

The question now - is what is this ‘super hero’ called?

The reader who submits the most original name for this Super Hero will receive a quality prize.

Closing date for entries is extended to Wednesday March 11 2015 (midnight).

Rumour has it that once named the ‘super hero’ may be available for a guest appearance at

next year’s community breakfast.

OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store—the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm).

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name ‘Jerraganda’ and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.

We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is,

“Doing Good and Having Fun”
