Jerraganda The Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra Inc D9710 Volume 16 No 5 Me Talk Jon Wells 18 Jan 13 Welcome : President Chris welcomed everyone to meeting 726 and apologised for not making the meeting at the Jerra Hotel last week. From reports, it was a good night, until the Trivia started, and our old folk found the acoustics a little difficult for their aged hearing! President Chris invited Cathy Hobbs to read the Charge to Australia, David Steven's to read the 4 Way Test and in the absence of someone Pres Chris lined up previously, can’t remember who, but were not there on time, Robert Cooke kindly gave the Charge to Rotary International and the Canberra Sunrise Club. Me Talk John Wells: Our new format commenced last year, however Jon obviously was not there and was a little shell shocked that he was up first, but like the great trooper that he is, he stepped up like a man, and gave us his life story! Jon grew up on a property in Cootamundra and in a nutshell, said his memories of his childhood were of a loving and basic existence.  Although not educa tion focussed, he completed year 12, b ut had a musical ear and a great love of classical music. On completion of year 12, he moved to Canberra anticipating a life in the Public Service, however there was a freeze on recruiting, and so started his life in finance when he joined the Bank of NSW. Jon had a varied employment history, which included Financial Mngt,  Advice/Assi stance with Pow er of Attorney, worked in the sales domain for approx 15 years, became the CEO of Softball ACT for about 5 ½ years which became a family affair involving both his daughter and son, who both played and represented. His daughter had the talent and his son the drive, and a very proud dad indeed. Jon has been married for 36 years to Linda; he loves to travel and is hoping his son’s fiancé makes the Olympics in Glasgow in 2014, where he will plan a trip to Europe!! Jon has experienced problems with glaucoma in his left eye, has had surgery and is happy to talk to anyone who would like to know more. Jon left us with one final message. He urges anyone who would like some assistance with Enduring Power of Attorney to please come and talk to him. Although no questions, Pres Chris said she may have crossed paths with him in the softball arena and to her embarrassment, Jon advised her that they had indeed crossed paths, he remembered her well, and was very flattering in his recollection of her. Nice one Mrs Hunter! For those not at last nights meeting, I forgot my glasses and was using Jon’s. I think your eyesight is worse than you realised Jon. Sorry!!! Reports: President : Pres Chris advised the Club that Keith Edmonds had applied for a Leave of Absence until Jun and the Board had approved his request. Pres Chris also confirmed that Liz Mulvaney had resigned from the Club and that the Board, although not willingly, felt that they had no option other than to accept Liz’s resignation. Pres Chris also advised that in the absence of an Attendance Officer, all apologies need to be to Colin Hobbs by the usual time of lunch time Tue until further notice. Pres Chris thanked Cathy for her work on Face Book (FB) and has urged any members on FB to join our page. Club Service: Colin Hobbs has asked for volunteers for the Attendance Officer and SGT-at-Arms. Until a volunteer comes forward, Colin will continue to fulfil both duties. Don’t’ feel pressured here fellow Rotarians, no guilt trip here!!!! Colin is a trooper and doesn’t have much to do anyway!!!! Sec: Cathy passed around the Rotarian for our reading pleasure, and reiterated Pres Chris’ comment regards the FB page and urged members to go in and ‘like’ the page, in doing so, you will get all updates, invites, etc. Cathy is yet to set the cover page photo. Cannot recall if Colin announced the poor attendance for tonight’smeeting!!!! Percentage doesn’t matter when there is no chance of port!!

Joker:

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl

whispered to her mother,

“Why is the bride dressed in white?”

The mother replied, “Because white is the colourof happiness, and today is the happiest day of her

life.”

The child thought about this for a moment then

said,

“So why is the groom wearing black?’

Drum roll please…… and the Joker was won by ….. Nobody!!!!!!

Although the Chillman gave it his best shot, the Joker, which

mysteriously had a balance of $17.75 (don’t ask!!), has jackpotted to

$49.75c (where the hell did the .75c come from, David?).

Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentor (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with

20 members. We are an unusual club as we have a very high proportion of female Members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store—the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We now meet at theJerrabomberra Comm unity Centre, on Thursdays (6.15 for  6.30 pm ) . As at 30 Sept 2011 the Club has 29 members— 13 female and 16 male.Included in this are eight married couples.

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club bulletin and a design for the Club banner. There weresome good and (very) bad suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name; Jerraganda. The banner design by David Stevens was

eventually selected. The design incorporates a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate.
