Wife of deceased LC police officer creates a memorial to her husband Ken Vance Editor Scott Reinecke thought he had a great idea and before he passed away, he shared that idea with his wife Charlie. The couple never got to put Scott’s idea into motion while the former La Center police of- icer was still alive so Charlie recently decided she needed to do something about that. “Scott and I had talked about it a couple of times in the last couple of years,’’ Charlie said. “We never got around to doing it like we wanted to so after he died, I decided I best do it.’’ The 51-year-old Reinecke died at his Woodland home on Sept. 10, 2011. He had been off active duty with the La Center Police Department for about seven months after undergoing a series of surgeries and proce- dures to address undisclosed health issues. Scott was an avid motorcy- clist and a member and past president of the Oregon 1 Chapter of the Blue Knights. The idea that he discussed with his wife was to provide a motorcycle alternative for the transport of a deceased per- son’s remains. Charlie, Scott’s wife of 10 years, carried Scott’s ashes on her own motorcycle during an emotional procession honoring her husband after his death. In the months since, she has com- pleted her goal to fulill Scott’s dream. The realization of that dream is now called Twilight Carriage Service. Charlie start- ed with Scott’s 100th Anniver- sary Harley Davidson Police Special Ultra Glide motorcycle and then proceeded to ind a trailer to pair with it to make up a biker’s hearse. She shopped around for a couple of months and eventu- ally found another party in the Tri Cities who was selling a trailer hearse and the company name to go with it. She and Jody Hiday, Scott’s best friend, went to check it out and Charlie decided to make the purchase. Hiday will serve as a coachmen for the service. “We had to do some detail- ing; it had a couple of rock chips in it,’’ Charlie said. “We did all the etching on the glass. We had a kit put on the motor- cycle so that it is actually four wheels, one in front and three in the back, so it’s kind of a trike with a hitch on it so that we could hook up the trailer.’’ On the trailer, Charlie had painted “In Loving Memory of Oficer Scott Reinecke.’’ “I feel really good about what I’ve accomplished,’’ said Charlie, who is retired after a long career with the Chips Casino in La Center. “It’s my way of having a memorial for my husband. I am very proud of him. He was a policeman for 26 years and he had many citations and he never bragged about any of them, never spoke about any of them, so nobody ever knew he had so many. He was just a quiet man who liked protecting children.’’ At the time of his death, La Center Police Chief Tim Hop- kin praised Scott Reinecke for his service, which included his position in La Center from 1998 until his death. “Scott was a big teddy bear,’’ Hopkin said. “When you irst met him, you saw this rough looking guy. But, he loved little kids. He loved them so much he would follow the school bus to make sure the kids got off the bus OK and that nobody was speeding through the area. “He would not miss their yearly fundraiser for Doern- becher (Children’s Hospital),’’ Hopkin said. “He was always acting like a big tough guy, but little kids affected his heart.’’ Charlie said her business would offer its services for free to all police personnel, ire- ighters, irst responders and military personnel who were killed in action and those not killed in action will receive 25 percent off.
