Leave Everything Behind We all have our favorites that we follow, be it our favorite sports team that we live and die by; or our favorite television show in which we cannot miss an episode; or favorite author whose writings will always intrigue us; or we have a favorite celebrity who never

fails to entertain us; or we have a favorite politician whose views seem to closely match ours or at least says all the right things that garners our support. In a sense, we could say that we are disciples of all those favorites by virtue of all the time and attention we give them. For example, if Joe Mauer came by me and said “follow me,” and hang out with the rest of the Minnesota Twins, I most certainly would do that.

And many of us even have a favorite priest. I know in my past assignments, there were people out there who look at the mass schedule and determine the one they will attend on the basis of which priest is presiding. “Beeson is presiding at this mass, let’s go to it;” or “Beeson is presiding, let’s avoid that mass like the plague.” I am so flattered when people come up to me and tell me that I am their favorite or that they love every one of my homilies, and it really makes me feel good that somehow I am connecting. I also understand that there are people that I do not connect with and probably never will.

When I was sitting in the pew, it was the same for me. I was always excited when certain priests presided because somehow their style made me sit up and listen, while there were other priests that presided made me regret that I did not bring a pillow with me. For the person sitting next to me in the pew it might have been just the opposite.

While my faith ultimately did not live or die by the priest of the day, my level of excitement about the faith would be affected. I was never really a disciple of any priest, but I knew of people that were close to that. And somehow, as I reflect back on those days, I think that sort of thing can be problematic.

I think Saint Paul would agree. In today’s second reading from his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul notes that there is dissention in the ranks, which people pledged their allegiance to certain individuals in the community, and there are rivalries because of it. The Corinthians were a divided community because of this. It would be as if to say that there would be a faction of people here say they belong to Father Jay because he was so wonderful at our wedding and another faction say they belong to Father Ortega because he was so wonderful with the baptism of our child and another faction say they belong to Father Terry because he was wonderful in bringing healing in the confessional; and each faction would declare that no other priest is acceptable. Paul is pointing out that this is not what being a disciple is all about. If it meant that, then the Cross of Christ would be emptied of all its meaning.

The call to discipleship is not a call to be a disciple of one particular person or another, but it is a call to be in union with Jesus Christ himself.

Stewards Among Us

Heidi Mace

I have been blessed with my wonderful husband Jeffrey and four beautiful children – Alex, Lauren, Anthony, and Abraham. We live in pretty Red Wing. I have been a parishioner of St. Joseph’s for over 20 years.

Active in the music ministry throughout high school and college, I was appointed the position of music director in 2002 by Fr. Klaers. Even though I declined the position, he -as known to many people- would not take no for an answer and thus I soon came to share my love of music with others in a more permanent position.

Henry Van Dyke once shared, “The woods would be quiet if no bird sang but the one that sang best.” It is important for us all to remember that we must use the talents God has blessed us with. Not one of us is perfect, but we all need to share the gifts we have been given to show God’s love and further his kingdom.

(Continued from page 2)

It is through the inspiration of certain individuals, that many people may hear the voice of Jesus calling them just as clearly as Simon, Andrew, James, and John did on that day they were fishing. For others though, that call may not be so clear.

It may be in the form of dissatisfaction with one’s own life and a yearning to make it better. The danger of that is that these sorts of individuals may possibly latch on to someone with just enough charisma, and by following that person, they may not ever be led to Christ. Sometimes we hear the call when life is just fine. And when we hear that call, what is our response? Do we look at this call as an intrusion on our plans? Or do we respond like those four we heard in today’s Gospel and leave everything behind? The idea of being like those four and leaving everything behind is an intimidating proposal. While it is true that those four left their occupation as fishermen behind to follow Jesus, the call to discipleship does not necessarily require leaving our occupations or our families behind to follow Jesus. What we leave behind are the things that keep us from following Jesus in the first place. If it is our own pettiness and divisiveness that keeps us from following Jesus, we need to leave it behind. If it is narrow-mindedness and mean-spiritedness that keeps us from following Jesus, we need to leave it behind. If it is our worldly desires of fame, fortune, power, and sex that keep us from following Jesus, we need to leave it behind. If it is being a slave to our own addictions, to our own greed that is keeping us from following Jesus, we need to leave it behind. If it is our discipleship to our favorite things, our favorite sports teams, our favorite television shows, our favorite authors, our favorite celebrity, our favorite politician, and yes, even our favorite priest; if all that is keeping us from truly following Jesus, we need to leave it all behind.

We are all called to be disciples of Jesus Christ. This discipleship is a commitment to love God, to love one another, and to serve one another. We renew that commitment every time we come up for communion. Let the Eucharist nourish us with the strength to maintain that commitment.—TB
