TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Every week, some treasures

from our tradition are shared here. Where does all this history

come from? The history of Godʹs people of prayer is always

coming to light, mostly because scholars have dedicated their lives

to research. They translate and ponder prayers and songs;

explore the places used for worship; look at the vessels, books,

and vestments; and read works from legal documents to letters and diaries.

In the 1930s, Hitterʹs rush to arm Germany closed seminaries as priests

and seminarians alike were drafted into service.

One professor, Father Josef Jungman, forced from his classroom,

spent the war years in an Austrian library. His careful work disclosed

much of what we know of the history of the Mass. His great work, The Mass of the Roman Rite,

describes the evolution of Eucharistic celebration and inspired generations

of scholars to explore a tradition surprisingly rich and varied.

It was said of him that he had a command of the past that cast

new light on the present, and opened up a clear direction to the future. His contributions to the Second Vatican Council

helped shape the way that we worship today.

At the end of his life, in 1975, his studies completed,

he told a friend that he was waiting patiently for the Lordʹs knock

at the door to take him to the heavenly banquet.

Mass Intentions

We regret the omission of the following names from the list of the Souls that appeared in last

weekʹs Bulletin. Please include the souls of † Vi LaValle and † Patrick OʹHalloran

in your prayers as we remember those who have passed.

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Todayʹs reading from the book of Wisdom presents an image of a patient God who rebuke[s] offenders little by little (Wisdom 12:2), an image endorsed by the psalmist, singing of how the LORD is slow to anger and of great kindness, and compassionate toward all his works (Psalm 145:8, 9). The crowd with Jesus, however, grumbles when they see Jesusʹs kindness and compassion extended to Zacchaeus, who was not just a tax collector, but the chief tax collector --a title that surely emphasizes his standing as a sinner to be scorned. In the second reading, Saint Paul urges the Thessalonians to be worthy of Godʹs calling, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you (2 Thessalonians 1:12); such people, unlike the crowd in the Gospel, would rejoice at Zacchaeusʹs determination to change his life after encountering Jesus. ZACCHAEUS, COME DOWN QUICKLY Why do good things happen to bad people? Does this question strike you as odd? Arenʹt we usually struggling with the bad things that happen to good people? True enough, but when good things happen to others, especially those we consider undeserving, it can seem natural to grumble. How do some people always seem to get away with it, while we spend our lives trying to act as God would want? As a tax collector, Zacchaeus cheated and got rich off of his own people. Why does Jesus want to be so nice to him? Itʹs just not fair! TODAY I MUST STAY AT YOUR HOUSE This problem of good things for bad people can cause as much distress as the problem of bad things happening to good people. Both touch on one of the deepest mysteries of human existence: Is the universe fair? Is God just? This is what is making the crowd grumble about Jesus favoring Zacchaeus. Why is Jesus befriending such a sinner? This is the third such complaint about Jesus in Lukeʹs Gospel (see Luke 5: 27 33 and 5:25 15). However, the encounter with Zacchaeus is different. In the other accounts, Jesus responds to his critics himself, but here, it is Zacchaeus who speaks up. Not only does Zacchaeus announce compensation for those he has cheated, he vows to give away half of his goods to the poor. At this point in the Gospel, Jesus is traveling to Jerusalem, where he knows he will be put to death. No one else that Jesus meets on this journey has responded as readily as Zacchaeus to his summons--first, to come down from the tree, then to come down from his wealthy lifestyle and the corruption that supported it. Although he did not travel to Jerusalem with Jesus, Zacchaeus clearly understood the demands of discipleship. This story gives us a hint as to why good things might happen to bad people: it is Godʹs patience, with Zacchaeus and with us as well, as God awaits our response, for us to become the disciples God is calling us to be. Todayʹs Readings: Wis 11:22 -- 12:2; Ps 145:1 2, 8 9, 10 11, 13, 14; 2 Thes 1:11 -- 2:2; Lk 19:1 10

6 Our Lady of Victory Religious Education

This is the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time. It is National Vocation Awareness Week, and Daylight Savings Time ends. We remember St. Charles Borromeo, and the Dedication of the Latern Basilica. REP meets on November 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th. There will be a special prayer service on November 20th at 7 p.m. in the lower church. Parents are encouraged to attend and the children will be dismissed from the lower church that evening at 7:30. REP will be collecting non-perishable items for our food pantry. Please have the children bring the items in when they come to REP. Thank you for donating to this very important cause. Parent Night for Reconciliation and First Eucharist is November 4th at 7 p.m. in the school hall. One or both parents of a child receiving the sacraments must attend the meeting and the children are welcome to join you. The Rite of Enrollment Mass and brunch for Eucharist is November 17th at the 10:30 Mass. All First Communion candidates and their families should be in attendance. The brunch will follow in the school hall. The Family Mass in November is on the 24th at 10:30. Please join us! Hospitality will follow in the lower church sponsored by Teen Open Gym! Please pray for the RCIA process and those in need of sacraments not just at OLV, but throughout the Archdiocese. In Closing.....November has arrived. A month that turns our thoughts to be thankful. The truth is, we should always be thankful, aware of others needs, and grateful for everything we have. Take time to enjoy the month. We adjust to the time change and the days are shorter. We notice the cooler weather, and indoor activities are more the norm. God gives us change to make sure we are never bored! He graces us with 4 seasons, sometimes in 1 day! He looks down on us as we do good deeds, and He is always there when we need a listening ear, an open heart, and a shoulder to lean on. God is good. M.B. Frystak DRE/Pastoral Associate
