In order to expedite the permitting process and construction schedule, JSE redesigned this structure for narrower shoulders adjacent to the river to eliminate the in-water construction. A design exception for narrow shoulders was successfully applied for and the ACOE permit was no longer required because the in-water construction was eliminated. To further expedite the construction, precast bent caps were designed. This eliminated the time and effort for conventional forming and pouring, allowing each cap to be installed in one or two days instead of a week or more. Welded Wire Reinforcing was used for the bridge deck to reduce construction time and labor costs. Two lanes of traffic were maintained for the duration of the construction. “Forming the Future Since 1976” INDIANA TOLL ROAD (P3) over US 12, CSX, Norfolk & Southern Railroads PUBLIC, PRIVATE, PARTNERSHIP – BRIDGE REHAB Janssen & Spaans Engineering, Inc.
