On behalf of Board of Trustees (BOT) and Executive Committee (EC) of the Jain Society of Greater Detroit (JSGD), we wish you all have enjoyed the summer of 2007. Now that we all have enjoyed the summer thoroughly, let’s recap all the fun that we had this summer. We celebrated Father's Day on June 17 th with a spectacular picnic at Camp Dearborn. The weather was great, the food was delicious and over 300 family members gathered to enjoy the outing. Many volunteers worked incredibly hard to make this a very successful event. Specifically, we would like to recognize Sharadbhai, Vinaybhai, Prafulbhai, Bipinbhai, Rohitbhai, Jagdishbhai, Shashibhai, Mahehndrabhai Doshi, & Kantibhai for leading the entire effort with many volunteers who helped in planning, organizing and cooking the food on the site. During the weekend of June 22 nd thru 24 th , we celebrated our temple's ninth anniversary in the presence of Shri Narendrabhai Nandu and his group. In addition to 18 Abhishek, and Dhwaja ceremony, Saraswati Pujan was performed on Saturday evening after many years. This Pujan was well attended. The sight of everyone in white performing the Pujan was just mesmerizing. Lunch for Saturday and Sunday was coordinated by Rachna Parakh and Bharti Shah. Many thanks to them and the volunteers for their help. Last but not the least, we appreciate the efforts of Sharadbhai Shah, Naliniben Shah and all the volunteers who organized and managed all the religious activities that were a central part of the celebration. On August 3 rd , we had one-of-a kind Gujarati drama, Apurva Avasar staged in our Social Hall. We would like to thank Vastupalbhai and Arvindbhai Shah (Troy) to help coordinate this entire event. Next major program is Paryushan Purva from the September 8 th through 15 th . We are delighted that Shree Bhadrabahuji Vijay Pukhraj Jain from Ahmedabad, an eminent scholar of Jainism, has accepted our invitation to be with us during the entire Paryushan celebration. This year, we are celebrating 25 th year of Swapna Darshan on 9 th September. We plan to have a small ceremony to mark this 25 th year before the actual Swapna Darshan. To minimize the length of the program and to avoid ratri bhojan on Swapna Darshan day, we plan to keep fixed amount for a majority of the gheebolis. We have posted the sign-up sheet at the temple and request your help to fill up the fixed gheebolis to help us expedite the program. Publication # 5 August 2007

Shah on 248-797-5843, or send him an email at [email protected]. The committee is open for your suggestions, so please share your thoughts. Social Services Committee: The Social services committee is now formed led by Hemant S. Shah. The new committee members are (1) Dr. Kanti Shah (2) Vastupal Shah, and (3) Usha D. Shah. This committee is also exploring other ways, how to help our members and make them comfortable, in case of an emergency. Pratishtha Pledges: Temple Pratishtha pledges were due by 2006. Most of the Pratishtha plaques are placed in the Temple as per the guidelines. If you have any issues with the plaque, pleased contact any BOT members, and bring it to their attention. We are in process of calling each and every member, and request to pay the pending dues. When we call, please bring up if you have any issues with your pending dues? Once the calling process is complete, committee is thinking of publishing the names in Jain- Vani whose dues are pending or may be placed a list on the Temple bulletin board for your review. Therefore, we request you to pay your dues. As you know, we still have to pay back members loan. Our committee is working on the loan returning process and logistics. Sooner we receive the due pledges from you, faster we can return the members loan, and make the Temple debt free. Social Hall Partitions: We are planning to install partitions in the social hall to reduce noise and other disturbances while teaching the class. The estimated expense is about $100,000. We already mailed a separate letter for your funding approval. Accordingly, a general body meeting is planned for September 9th during Paryushan. If you have any questions, please call Mahnedra J. Shah (734-453-2968) or Ramesh Shah (248-661-4250). We also wish to generate donations for the partition project. It is our all intention to make the Temple debt free and financially self-supported. If you have any ideas or thoughts, please call any BOT members, and share your thoughts.

JAINA UPDATE Unique Drama on Srimad’s Life Captivates Audiences….Support JAINA! “Apurva Avasar”, a super-hit drama, presented at the 2007 JAINA Convention in early July, was staged in our Community Hall on Friday, August 3. Over 500 Guajarati-speaking attendees, including non-Jains joined our Society members for a memorable evening filled with appreciation and applause for the talented actors and production team, as they portrayed important incidents from the lives of Pujya Srimad Rajchandra and Mahatma Gandhi. While the undersigned claim no credit for staging Apurva Avasar, as your JAINA Directors, we want to emphasize that this drama event would not have been possible without JAINA first locating, inviting and sponsoring the performers from India. 2007 JAINA Convention - Detroit Society was represented at the 2007 JAINA Convention held July 5-8 in Edison, New Jersey by several members and leaders, including Vastupalbhai Shah, Kalpanaben Shah, Mahendra (Guruji) Shah, Ajay Dagli and several other families from our area. It was the collective opinion of everyone that this was the best organized and executed JAINA Convention event, with diverse programming for all ages, numerous learning opportunities from a large contingent of scholars and leaders from India, and the best Jain food and entertainment. For more Convention highlights and photos, visit: http://jaina.org/conventionSummary.asp . Support JAINA - We respectfully request all Society members to wholeheartedly support JAINA and its mission of linking, preserving, growing and strengthening the Jain Way of Life. It is an excellent way to maintain our Jain identity, roots and culture for new generations. You can support by mailing $201 as lifetime subscription to: Jain Digest Quarterly Magazine JAINA Headquarters - P.O. Box 700, Getzville, NY 14068 JAINA is working very hard to conduct many useful projects and bring more benefits to our entire North American Jain community. The 2009 Convention is in Los Angeles. Always at your service, and with best regards, Hemant Shah and Manish Mehta JAINA Directors

Jain Study Class Corner

August 8, 2007 Jai Jinendra

Quote for the month: “When you walk, walk with awareness. When you stand, be mindful that you are standing. When you sit, know what you are doing. When you sleep, remain aware. When you speak and eat, do not commit any harm to any living being. In this way, you will stop inviting painful consequences and will no longer create the cycles of Karmic Bondage for yourself.”

What did the students learn during past two years? – A chart with topics taught by teachers in various groups is posted on bulletin board. Please take time to read - there are several other interesting articles are also posted on the board. Teachers Meeting at JAINA Convention – During JAINA convention, there was a meeting where teachers from various centers got together to discuss and share teaching experience in their centers. Our center was also represented by Mahendrabhai J. Shah and Mahendrabhai Kapadia, who brought back some valuable information which would help our study class activities. If you like to know more about this, please stop by during one of the study class day. Graduation – Following students have graduated from high school and are on their way to college. The study class team wishes them good luck for their further study and bright future: Pranadhi Koradia, Poorvi Modi, Rohan Modi, Ruchi Shah, Sonali Shah, Vishwas Shah, and Paras Vakharia. Also, all the students from class groups AA through G will be promoted to next group starting September 2007. Congratulations to all of them and also their parents. 2007 – 2009 Curriculum – Based on the input from teachers, parents, and available literature from JAINA new curriculum has been drafted for 2007 – 2009. It is being reviewed with our teachers and will soon be reviewed with parents also. 2007 Shibir with Respected Diptiben – We will have this year’s shibir coached by Diptiben and Light House Team on Sept 22 and 23 for study class students. As in past, we will need few volunteers to coordinate fun activities. If you can help us or have any questions, please contact Mahendra J. Shah or Vinay C. Shah at the earliest. Registration is in progress. Shibir agenda is posted on bulletin board at the temple. Search for Teachers – Study Class is in need of few enthusiastic and committed teachers. Birth Announcement

Chandresh and Hemali Doshi announce the birth of their second daughter Davina born on 18 June 2007.

Guidelines for Youth Tapascharyas and Recognition during upcoming Paryushan

There will be points counting for various categories of Tapascharyas. Simple observance of “Chauvihar” on a given day will earn ½ point. ‘Chauvihar’ points will not be counted if it is attached to other Tapascharyas like ‘Besanu – Ekasanu, Ayambil or Upavas’ on same day.

• Observance of “Besanu” will earn 2 points. • Observance of “Ekasanu” or “Ayambil” will earn 4 points • Observance of “Upavas” will earn 6 points. • First requirement will be to have minimum 5 days of Tapascharyas (Upavas, Ekasanu, Ayambil

or Besanu). • Second requirement will be to have minimum of 16 points for the recognition.

• This means if some one observes 8 days with 8 “Besanas” – he or she will earn 16 points (8x2).

[Eligible for recognition]. If some one observes 1 Upavas and 2 “Ekasanas” he or she will earn 14 points (6x1 + 4x2). [Not Eligible for recognition].

• If some one observes 1 Upavas + 2 “Ekasanas” + 1 “Besanu” will earn 16 points (6x1 + 4X2 + 2x1). [Still Not Eligible for recognition due to count of only 4 days of Tapascharyas].

• If someone observes 2 Upavas and 2 Ekasanas he or she will earn 20 points (6x2 + 4x2). [Still Not Eligible for recognition due to count of only 4 days of Tapascharyas].

• The main reason of putting such restriction is to challenge for honest efforts and restrict overflow.
