Dear Members, Jai Jinendra! The arrival of spring brings joy, happiness, and warm weather which we all are looking forward to. We, from Executive Committee and Board of Trustees, wish you all a wonderful spring season. The Puja committee and volunteers performed two major Pujas, Sattar-Bhedi and Navvanu-Prakari, in the month of March. We would like to recognize them and thank them. Our 15th annual Fund Raising Dinner program held at Burton Manor on March 22, 2008 was a grand success. Typical comments were – well organized, lots of people attended, excellent food, had more space this time, decoration was very nice, and so on. We are very happy to announce that a total of $128,000 was raised. The expense was about $31,000 resulting in approximately $97,000 net income. We would like to thank all those who pledged donations and also to those who provided the advertisement in the brochure. The list of pledges and brochure advertisement are included in this Jainvani. .Record attendance of 480 people enjoyed the event. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the entire Fund Raising Team and volunteers for their dedication and hard work in making this event a grand success. Our next major program is the celebration of Mahavir Janma Kalyanak (Mahavir Jayanti) on Saturday, April 26th. The details of the program are included in this newsletter. Since the JOY Group will be performing Snatra Puja, it will be greatly appreciated if you can come early to show your support to our youth. Shaam-E-Karaoke entertainment program will be held on Sunday, May 4th. Stars of the community will present both old and new Bollywood songs. Support this good cause and bring your family and friends for a fun filled evening at the temple. Student’s Annual Day Function, the most awaited programs of the year by the kids, will held be on Sunday, May 18th. During this event, the kids get to show what they learnt in the study class by means of a skit, a dance or a similar item. The teachers, students and parents are working really hard preparing for this event. Please mark this date on your calendar and join us to encourage the kids – our future. Continued on page 2

Continued from Page 1 Every year we have 3 days of celebration on our Temple’s anniversary in June. This year, being 10th anniversary, we want it to be little different, little special, something that all of us would remember for the rest of our lives. Hence we have planned 10 days of celebration from Friday, June 13th through Sunday, June 22nd with variety of programs. The complete schedule for the Tenth Temple Anniversary program has been published in this newsletter. In short, we have exciting events planned for this spring and summer. Please refer to the details in this newsletter. The entire schedule for the year is also published on our website at www.jain-temple.org. You may have noticed that the curtain is installed on the stage downstairs and the study class partition preparation is almost completed. The partitions will be operational by early May. We would like to thank Jayeshbhai Mehta for leading this task. The expense for curtain and partitions is approximately $90,000. The guidelines for recognizing donors are published in this newsletter. Please consider donating generously. Thank you and Jai Jinendra. Rajiv Maheshwari Praful Shah President, Executive Committee Chairman, Board of Trustees

AN APPEAL FOR YOUR SUPPORT
SOCIAL HALL PARTITIONS AND CURTAINS
Respected Members of the Jain Society of Greater Detroit: We come with an appeal requesting you to be part of the success story. Some of you may have visited our Jain Temple in past couple of weeks and may have walked down in social hall. You should have seen the face lift of the stage in the hall. Our nice looking stage now looks nicer. The stage is now ornamented with a beautiful stage curtain all around and the hall looks and feels like an auditorium. You may also have seen the work in progress on the east side of the hall. The track installation work is now complete and partition walls are being custom made. We should have three folding rooms created by end of May. This will bring smiles on 110 students, 30 teachers and volunteers plus 80 or so parents who come to study class on biweekly basis. This project has materialized because of heart warming approval and support from the members and various committee members of our society. To keep the same tradition as in past, study class team would like to make this project a self supportive one with your help. We have initiated a pledge drive to install recognition plates on both sides of the stage (six donors $5,000 each) and on three pillars of the hall (where partitions will be installed). There will be three recognition plates one on each pillar. The donors of $ 1,500 to 2,999 will be listed on bronze plates, the donors of $ 3,000 to 4,999 will be listed on silver plates and the donors of $ 5,000 and up will be listed on gold plates. More details will be posted on bulletin board shortly. Kindly join us, be part of the success story and support us as you always have done in past. Please talk to your young children (young adults) who have been thru and/or seen and heard about study class achievements. We can certainly use their help also. We will have a big improvement in study class teaching techniques not just by looks of the class rooms but also by making it more pleasant and professional. Please come and visit us at any time during the class time. Feel free to contact any of the following members for your questions and pledges. Thanks, Mahendra Shah Praful Shah Jayesh Mehta 734-453-2968 248-851-1978 248-474-3389 Vinay Shah Rajiv Maheshwari 248-641-5975 248-488-1332

Many of you recall the happiest moment in our lives when the Temple doors were opened to welcome the idols inside the Ghabhara area. The celebration was witnessed by over 5,000 people. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for members and that was very visible in the emotions and the energy that filled the Temple. Those memories are still vivid in our minds. Although this special event can never be repeated however we can still relive the memories and create new ones by celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the Temple. We have come a long way in these 10 years. The membership has doubled since the First Pratishtha. The Temple property has been used for many religious and social activities benefiting the entire Metro Detroit area community. BOT/EC has planned a magnificent program that will cover 10 days of fun filled and religious activities. List of events is included in this newsletter. Continued next page

We need volunteers to assist in this celebration. Please join a sub-committee to help us make this a grand success. List of sub-committees is included in this newsletter. JAINA LONG RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE (LRPC) The Society would like to thank Raj Jain, BOT member and Manish Mehta, JAINA Director, for volunteering to attend the JAINA LRPC meeting in Chicago. 2009 JAINA Yatra
JAINA is planning a two week Yatra of Shree Samet Shikharji and nearby Teerth dhams in 2009. The yatra will start in late January and end in early February.
Detail itinerary and registration form will be made available in August and posted on www.jaina.org . Vastupal Shah, Chairman, Pilgrimage Committee [email protected], 586-323-2015 (Home)
2008 JAINA YatraJanuary 4 – January 19 Rajasthan and Gujarat
Planning for the 2008 JAINA Yatra started in August, 2007. Over a period of few weeks, the detailed itinerary was discussed and finalized with the help of Dilipbhai Shah, past Chairman of the Pilgrimage committee and current President of JAINA and Rameshbhai Patani of Patani Tours of Bombay. The yatra plan was communicated to various Jain Centers in multiple forms including e-mail distributions, Jain Digest Publication and individual phone calls. The final yatri count was 32 - large enough and comfortable for one bus. We had collected $950/person from each of the yatris. This included $840 for the land tour (based on double occupancy), $75 for donations and $35 for JAINA administrative fees. In addition to our primary purpose of visiting various tirthdhams, we also had the opportunities to include some fun activities to enhance the yatra experience. In order to ensure a disciplined process, we had established rules for the bus travel, room accommodations and for the daily program. All of these resulted in an efficient, non-preferential and timely management of the yatra. 32 yatris gathered in Udaipur on January 4, 2008 to start the yatra. For the yatra, we had prepared special vinyl bags containing puja samagri, a batavo, a stavan book and a short booklet containing the details about various tirthdhams that were in our itinerary. This was distributed to each yatri. During next seven days in Rajasthan, we visited Kesariyaji, Ranakpur, Jodhpur, Osiyaji, Falodi, Ramdev Pir, Jaisalmer, Amarsagar, Lodravar, Nakodaji, Bamanwadaji, Mt. Abu, Delwada and Achalgadh. . Remaining seven days of the yatra were spent visiting various tirths in Gujarat. Starting with Taranga, followed by Mehsana, Sankheshwar, Rajkot, Junagadh-Girnar, Palitana. Ayodhyapuram and ending in Ahmedabad on January 19. In addition to all the yatras at our tirthdhams, we also enjoyed various fun activities including: Authentic folk dance programs in Udaipur and Jaisalmer Camel safari in Sams Dessert near Jaisalmer International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad and opportunity to meet with Gujarat Chief Minister Mr.
Narendra Modi Lion Safari in Devaliya (near Sassan)
Patani Tours of Bombay did an outstanding job of managing the yatra. A staff of 25 people in addition to Rameshabhi, Kiranben and Chirag traveled with us to ensure a wonderful yatra experience for all of us. Vastupal Shah Chairman, Pilgrimage Committee, JAINA

Quote for the month: “The soul is completely alone in this universe. The soul is responsible for its own actions and thoughts and no worldly companions, family or friends, can share in its joys or burdens. Knowing this, one should not involve himself/herself in any inauspicious activities, for he/she alone will have to bear the burdens of own Karmas.”

JAIN NETWORKING FORUM at the 2008 YJA CONVENTION
Why is JNF for me? What's unique about JNF (Jain Networking Forum) is that not only will there be 150 or more 20-something professionals, but we will be in our own area which will be sectioned off from the rest of the Convention attendees during the daytime and parts of the evening. It will be the only place where all of us can get together, learn, laugh, share, and explore ourselves within 3 days full of innovative sessions and social networking experiences. Not only will there be people coming from coast to coast in the United States, but attendees coming from Canada, England, and Australia as well! If you're in your post-college years, this will be one of those experiences that when you look back months from now, you'll be amazed at the openings created, the insights gained, and the intimate connections from JNF. What is different this year at JNF? While this year's JNF experience will carry on the tradition of past successful events, we have engaged in a different approach this year. We wanted to make this year's session and convention experience focused around the questions that attendees are engaged in being in there 20's. Keeping in mind that it is usually a time of re-integration and re-connection, we have created a convention experience balancing spiritual, professional, social elements, and social activism. Who are leading JNF sessions? This year we will have more sessions led by people who are connected with the post-college experience, along with a handful of speakers from other organizations who can spark dialogue to support us in navigating through the challenges that we faced trying to find our place, within ourselves and the world. Key scholars within the Jain Community will discuss the integration of Jain principles in our current experience. The quest for spiritual balance through yoga and meditation is equally if not more important than the application of our minds in daily activities. Chandri Shah, a prominent yoga guru, will guide us through effective methods which will allow ourselves to channel our inner strength. Renowned leaders within and outside the Jain Community will discuss the dynamics of effective leadership, while leaders from the exciting Landmark Education system will help us identify the critical elements that construct the role of listening and effective communication. Aparna Kothary, community outreach activist for SAALT (South Asian American Leaders of Tomorrow) will engage us in the value of civic engagement by pinpointing the strategies of social activism.
How? Young professionals can register online at http://www.yja.org/chicago How much? Register until April 30th it will be $300; thereafter, convention fees (space permitting) will be $325 until June 15th. Also, a $40 additional fee for your own set of souvenirs and convention experience. How do the JNFer’s travel to the convention? We want to go together, so let the local representative know. Contact Ajay Dagli at [email protected] or (248) 689-8012 today for any questions or comments.

JAINA Update – April 2008 2008 JAINA-Kellogg Leadership Conference Held at Northwestern University: The 4th Annual Jain Leadership Conference was held March 14-16 at the Kellogg Business School under the leadership of Dean Dipak Jain. BOT Member Raj K. Jain and JAINA Director Manish Mehta represented JSGD. Organized by the JAINA Long-Range Planning Committee (www.jainleadership.org ), and attended by 33 center leaders, board members and Directors (including 8 youth), the 2008 Kellogg Forum was intended to launch key initiatives in infrastructure development in order to achieve JAINA’s Vision 2020 goals. These goals will only be achieved through participation and collaboration amongst all Jain centers in North America. Thanks to our seasoned visionaries and the financial maturity of our Detroit Jain society, JSGD is regarded as a leading and progressive society in North America – this is due to the great diversity and balance of religious, cultural and educational offerings and services that JSGD has instituted for all ages of members. Some highlights below:
• One new idea learned from Jain Center of New York is to offer SAT Prep Classes so as to strengthen our youth for academic success, and attract more youth participation.
• JAINA will soon launch JainLink, an Internet tool designed for faith-based organizations to help Jain communities to Connect-Communicate-Collaborate.
• JAINA is promoting JSGD’s well-documented EC/BOT/Committee Roles and Responsibilities for Centers (prepared by Vastupalbhai Shah and his EC/BOT).
• Next JAINA Convention is July 4-6, 2009 in Los Angeles – the program theme is on the environment and ecology – a Hollywood connection is in progress. Stay tuned!
• Ms. Dina Fokas of Council for Parliament of the World’s Religions said next Parliament is on Dec. 3-9, 2009 in Melbourne, Australia.
• Mr. Michael Terrien of Play for Peace, an organization focused on experiential learning and education using energizing, body-contact exercises to promote healing, peace and trust amongst people- “You can learn more about someone in one hour of play than you can in one year of conversation!”
United Nations Council Approves JAINA Humanitarian Status- JAINA President Dilipbhai Shah announced that the UN has recently approved (formal recognition to follow) JAINA as a credible organization to actively partner with for addressing humanitarian and peace-making concerns worldwide. This development will elevate the visibility of Jains and JAINA worldwide, as well as offer JAINA new pathways for promoting our core principles of Ahimsa (non-violence), Anekantvada (tolerance) and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness). Support JAINA- JAINA is working hard to organize many useful projects and bring more benefits to our entire North American Jain community. We request all Society members to support JAINA and its mission of linking, preserving, growing and strengthening the Jain Way of Life.
