New winter highwaysafety measures

following an intense winter, the min.of Transportation & infrastructure is un-dertaking several improvements to makeBc highways safer during winter months.

This year, the coquihalla summit hada total snowfall of 830cm — 114 % higherthan the 10-year average.

The ministry is moving on a numberof measures, including:

• Stricter commercial vehicle chain-uprequirements: higher fines for commer-cial vehicles not carrying chains, or notchaining up when required.

• a pilot program to restrict commer-cial vehicles from using the far left laneon key three-lane highway sections in thewinter, to ensure routes remain open tosnow plows, emergency vehicles andpassenger vehicles.

• investing $1.8 million over the next3 years in additional weather stations andoverhead message signs to provide betterreal-time weather & road condition info.

• enhanced road-maintenance con-tractor monitoring and auditing, leverag-ing new tools and technology, like roadweather stations, variable speed limit sys-tems, and GpS tracking of snow plows.

• extending winter tire and chain reg-ulations on select highways from oct. 1to april 30 (instead of march 31).

The ministry will be engaging pub-licly with the commercial trucking indus-try, and other stakeholders, in the comingmonths on the implementation of thenew safety measures, with required reg-ulatory changes expected to be in placeby next winter.

Today, april 6, emergency alerts in Bcissued through the national alert readyprogram will also be sent to compatiblewireless devices, such as smartphones, toensure more people have the informationthey need to act quickly in an emergency.

Wireless alerts will be publicly testedfor the first time in Bc on may 9, at 1:55pm, alongside routine television andradio tests. emergency management Bc(emBc) is the sole agency responsible forissuing emergency notifications on thealert ready system in the province, andwill initially issue such alerts for tsunamithreats only. The province is consideringexpanding the use of alert ready beyondtsunamis to include other hazards andemergencies in the future.

Wireless alerts will contain instructionsfor a safe response, and all Britishcolumbians are urged to abide by these in-structions without delay. in order to re-ceive alerts, mobile phones must beconnected to a cellular network, be alert-compatible and within the alert area.
