Notes From Anna

Welcome to March! Did you know that March is National Woman’s History Month, Social Workers Month, National Peanut Butter Month, National Frozen Food Month, National Nutrition Month, Red Cross Month, but best of all it’s Irish American Month, when everybody is Irish or would like to be Irish. Every St. Patrick’s Day I have a flash back to my elementary school. We celebrated this special day by singing Irish songs such as “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” or “McNamara's Band”. Since I grew up in a very diversified neighborhood surrounded by Polish, Ukrainian, French, Croatians and Italians, it never occurred to us to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. After all there were only two Irish families so there wasn’t much green. Of those two families one person stood out; Shannon Hickey. She came from a fairly large Irish family of four boys and three girls. I can see her walking to school on St. Patrick’s Day wearing a green hat, green knee socks, and proudly carrying a walking stick. I remember asking what the stick was for after all she hadn’t broken her leg (remember we’re in elementary school) . She set me straight by proudly stating that it was not a walking stick but a Shillelagh and it had been in the family over 100 years. That was the first time I had seen a Shillelagh. Time passed and I later learned that Shannon had entered the convent and became a nun. Knowing Shannon I’m sure she celebrates St Patrick’s day wearing the green and proudly carrying her Shillelagh.

Want to be the first to read our newsletter? If so, go to townoforchardparkny.org on the home page on the right side you will find a list of contacts and report and studies. Is That Your Coat—-or mine? Have you ever noticed how many other coats or jackets look like yours? During the months when everyone wears a coat, it is common for people to accidentally leave the Senior Center with the wrong one. Please consider putting your name and telephone number, or some kind of identification in or on your coat to help prevent mix-ups. If you are missing a coat check the Lost and Found box, upstairs in the lobby. Items left more than 3 months will be donated to City Mission.

Reminder: The University Express Program sponsored by Erie County Department of Senior Services and held at designated Senior Centers offer stimulating academic classes free of charge to older adults. Individual topics in History, Science, current Affairs, Humanities, Life Enrichment and Wellness will be offered. Classes resume in the Spring. Remember, knowledge is power.
