TENDERS addressed to the Secretary, Commonwealth Railways, 623 Collins -street, Melbourne, C.1, will be received up to 4 p.m. on 6th November, 1945, for the supply and delivery of-

COLD STORAGE AND ICE -MAKING PLANT.

Specification and General Conditions are available for issue at the office of the Commonwealth Railways, Melbourne, and of the Works Directors at Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane.

Envelopes enclosing tender should be endorsed " Tender for Cold Storage and Ice -making Plant ".

OFFERS, closing with the Secretary, Department of the Interior, Canberra, at noon on the 26th October, 1945, are invited from persons who are natural born British subjects, for grazing rights for sheep only, for the period ending the 30th June, 1950, over the Seymour Camp site, Victoria, containing approximately 862 acres subject to the following conditions : -

The licensee will be required to pay rental half -yearly or quarterly- in advance ; to keep the area clean and free from noxious weeds, rubbish, garbage, debris, . &c. ; to destroy rabbits and other noxious animals; to keep all fences and gates in good repair and condition; to make good damage

done by stock to works buildings, &c.; to indemnify the Commonwealth against injury or damage or loss of life or stock through the use of the area as a camp site, or for any other Commonwealth purpose whatsoever; to . remove stock from the area when required by the Commonwealth authorities to do so; not to assign or sublet without authority; to use the area for grazing sheep only and not to interfere with the Commonwealth's use of the area for any purpose whatsoever.

The licensee is required to make satisfactory arrangements for -the, shepherding of sheep in the area laid down with lawns, .&c., and planted with trees, to be defined by the Army Camp Commander.

Troùghing will be re- installed by the Department of the Army which will also be responsible for the rubbish tips on the area.

A rebate of rental will be granted when there is any real loss of grazing.

The caretaker for the time being of the Seymour Camp may graze not more than two horses and three cows on the land.

The Commonwealth reserves the right to withdraw the whole or any portion of an area from the licence on one month's notice, without payment of compensation, if required for Commonwealth use.

The area is available for letting as it stands, and no expense will be borne by the. Commonwealth in regard to fencing required to be erected or reconditioned, or the eradication of noxious weeds, &c.

The successful tenderer will be required to make a Statu- tory Declaration, and if so desired, to furnish additional evi- dence that he or she is a natural born British subject.

Offers should be in writing;. there is no special tender form. Plans and conditions of tenancy may be inspected at the

local Post Office, or at the office of Department of the Interior, 225 Bourke-street, Melbourne.

Australian . Soldiers' Repatriation Act 1920 -1945.

LISTS of names of persons in accordance with sub -section (2.) of section 8 of the Australian Soldiers' Repatriation

Appointment of Assistant Research Officers. APPLICATIONS are invited for two positions of Assistant

Research Officer., Division of Economic Entomology. Location. -The appointees will probably be required to work

initially at Canberra, but may be required to carry out work elsewhere at the discretion of the Council.

Duties. -To work on entomological problems. Qualifications. -A University degree in science or agricul-

turai science with entomology or zoology as a major subject, or equivalent qualifications. Research experience is a desir- able, but not essential qualification.

Salary.- Dependent on qualifications and experience, com- mencing salary will be determined within the range of Assist- ant Research Officer (Male : £396 -£540 p.a. actual ; Female: £321 4465 p.a. actual; eight equal increments, first four automatic, remainder discretionary) .

A. TECHNICAL OFFICER ( CHEMIST) ( Two Positions) .

Location,.-Canberra, A.C.T., but may be required later to carry out work elsewhere at the discretion of the Council.

Duties. To undertake routine chemical analyses of pastures. Qualifications.-Diploma in chemistry or biochemistry of a

recognized Technical College or equivalent qualifications.

B. TECHNICAL OFFICER -PASTURE. INVESTIGATIONS (Four Positions) .

Location. -(i) Two officers will, after an initial training period at Canberra, be located at field stations in New South Wales, but may be required later to work elsewhere at the discretion of the Council.

(ii) Two officers will, after an initial training period at the Cooper Laboratory, Lawes, be located at field stations in Southern Queensland, but may be required later to work else- where at the discretion of the Council.

Duties. -To he responsible for tfie routine conduct of field investigations on sheep pastures.

Qualifications. - Diploma in agriculture of a recognized Agricultural College or equivalent qualifications. Applications will be accepted from final year students, with a view to commencement of duties early in 1946. Confirmation of appointment to be contingent on admission to the Diploma.

íalaries.- Dependent on qualifications and experience, com- mencing salary for positions listed above under A and B will be determined within range of Technical Officer (£274 to £454 per annum actual; ten equal increments, first four automatic, remainder discretionary) .

In the case of minors the following scale of salary will apply :- Eighteen years -£134 per annum actual ; nineteen years -£158 per annum actual; twenty years -£188 per annum actual; plus a special allowance of £30 per annum to diploma holders.

Duties. -To carry out investigations into pastures for sheep and wool production, involving work in one of the following three main. fields: Research on sheep pastures, research on irrigated pastures, or ecological survey of pastures.

Qualifications. -- University degree in agricultural science, or in science with botany as a major subject, or equivalent qualifications. Applications should state field of work and location preferred.

B. WEEDS INVESTIGATIONS (One Position) . Location. -The appointee will be stationed initially in

Canberra, A.C.T., but may be required to carry out work elsewhere at the discretion of the Council.

Duties. -To carry out investigations into problems of plant physiology associated with weed control.

Qualifications.- University degree in science, with bio- chemistry and /or plant physiology as major subjects, or equivalent qualifications.

A. TECHNICAL SECRETARY.

Duties.-To assist the Officer -in- charge in the organization and administrative work of the Section.

Qualifications.- University degree in science, engineering, or architecture, or equivalent qualifications, with some years' research and /or industrial experience and administrative ability.

ENTRY OF CADET MIDSHIPMEN (S) INTO THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY.

APPLICATIONS are invited for entry as Cadet Midshipmen

(S) into the Royal Australian Navy from youths who attain the age of seventeen (17 ) years during the calendar year, 1945 (i.e., those born during 1928 ) .

Applicants must have passed the Leaving Certificate or the Senior Public Examination conducted by the State Universities

or the Education Departments or be sitting for one of these examinations this year.

Applications should reach the Secretary, Navy Office, Melbourne, S.C.1, not later than 15th November, 1945.

COMMONWEALTH PUBLIC SERVICE.

PROMOTIONS - SECTION 50 AND " REGULATION 109. THE following promotions are provisional and subject to appeal by officers to the Public Service Board, and, where consequent upon

another provisional promotion, shall be dependent upon the latter being confirmed. Appeals should be lodged, either by letter or telegram; within twenty -one days of the date of this notification, as follows :-

(a) if the promotion is to be made in a State, with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector in the capital city of that State ;

(b) if the promotion is to be made in the Australian Capital Territory, with the Public Service Inspector in Canberra, unless the promotion is to be made to a vacancy in the Postmaster -General's Department, in which case the officer shall lodge his appeal with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector, Sydney ;

(c) if the promotion is to be made in the Northern Territory :- (i) with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector, Brisbane, in the case ofa promotion to a vacancy in the Department

of Trade and Customs ; (ii) with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector, Adelaide, in the case ofa promotion to a vacancy inthe Postmaster-

General's Department ; (iii) with the Public Service Inspector, Canberra, in other cases.

An appellant shall forward his appeal direct to the Public Service Inspector. Under Section 50 (7A) of the Commonwealth Public Service Act, the Board may regard an appeal as having been made against a

provisional promotion notified hereunder by any officers who, at any time within the time prescribed for lodging an appeal, are absent on leave for war service.

Where an officer desires to appeal against two or more provisional promotions a separate appeal should be lodged in respect of each, except where the provisional promotions appealed against are to positions of similar classification in the same Branch of a Department, when one appeal covering such provisional promotions will be accepted.

The grounds of appeal must be as prescribed in Section 50 of the Commonwealth Public Service Act, viz. (a) Superior efficiency ; or (b) Equal efficiency combined with seniority.

(N.B. -Where positions have been the subject of an Arbitration Determination, the salary scales shown are those prescribed by Determinations.)

VACANCIES. -It is estimated that five appointments will be made at each of Katoomba and Burnie, four at Launceston, three at Wagga Wagga, two at each of Bathurst, Ivanhoe,

W Stroud, Port Victoria, hyalla,' Leonora and Devonport, and one at each of the other centres within the twelve months period of eigibility.

ELIGIBILITY.--A successful candidate will be eligible for appointment at the centre at which she has qualified until the expiration of twelve months commencing on the date of the publication in the Commonwealth Gazette of the results of the examination.

APPOINTMENT SUBJECT TO CONDITIONS.-Upon appointment a successful candidate must produce evidence of the date of her birth and a medical certificate satisfying the Board in such particulars as it may determine of sound bodily health and freedom from physical defects. Successful candidates should not undergo medical examination for this purpose until instructed to do so. Upon the confirmation of her appointment, an officer will also be required to contribute to the Commonwealth Superannuation Fund.

Qualified candidates who on appointment are already tem- porarily employed, or who take up duty within fourteen days of the date of issue by the Chief Officer of notification of appointment and request to report for duty, will be regarded for seniority purposes as having entered the Commonwealth Service on the date of the Public Service Inspector's appoint- ment certificate.

Commonwealth Public Service for promotion or transfer to the positions named in the appended schedule. Where so indicated. applications will also be received from officers of the Public Service of the States and other persons.
