EXCHANGING GROWTH IDEAS Are your fundraisers bringing in a "BANG FOR YOUR CLUB?" Fundraisers can be fun and exciting to its members and the community. Successful events can also leave a long-standing impact and presence in the community. They can strengthen clubs' community service efforts and strengthen membership growth. Several organizations' fundraisers are competing for the same EVENTS, DATES, LOCATIONS, and ATTENDEES. It is becoming more difficult to hold successful fundraisers because of the increased number of fundraisers being held in communities. Many fundraisers are reporting a decrease in dollars raised every year.

Many clubs are changing and need to keep up with their changing members. For example, there are numerous golf outings. Clubs need to consider, "Are we still making a profit?" "Are we able to obtain sponsorships from those who have contributed in the past?" "Is this fundraiser still interesting to the club's members?" Clubs should have a fundraising committee that tracks and reviews expenses after every event to ensure profit. Even if it is a small increase, there should be an increase on the club's profits every year. Consider changing venues and/or vendors if it would be more cost

Page 11: Items in this issue - National Exchange Club · 2015. 6. 11. · We are excited to announce the 28th new club of the 2014 - 2015 administrative year. Please join us in welcoming the

effective. When developing new fundraisers, always start small and cost-effective, and then build up the event. After tweaking and adding to the event, and establishing the event, there should be a strategy to increase profits and create an event that is more interesting and better attended. If there are many similar community fundraisers, find ways to compete with events in the area by making your events stand out. Many clubs are joining with other groups to host events - collaborating with other clubs, organizations, or causes can provide added community service value. Is your Exchange Club fundraiser getting the recognition it deserves through newspapers, radio, social media, banners, and other recognition. Is the Exchange Club's name being publicly associated with the event? Make sure your event has an audience before, during, and after the event! Put your marketing efforts to good use and get your Exchange Club recognized! Trends in Youth Programs have increased and are very popular with clubs that hold fundraisers to support such efforts. Many club members enjoy serving the youth and fundraisers should reflect what interests the group. Survey members' interests to ensure the group is still excited about the cause for which it is raising money. It is important to serve the members needs while serving the community. Make your changes now for the upcoming year and you will get more "bang out of your projects! She was an honor roll student and was recently accepted into the Gifted and Talented Program. Melissa was a member of Girl Scout Troop #51203 and a parishioner of St. Isadore Church, Christ the Good Shepherd Parish, where she sang in the children’s choir. Her family had just come together to celebrate her First Holy Communion in April. Melissa accompanied Bob and Agnes to numerous Exchange events, including many National and Bi-District Conventions. She had an infectious personality, a beautiful smile and quickly became a special friend to all – an amazing young lady! She will be very sorely missed. Melissa is survived by her father, Thomas Headley; grandparents, Bob and Agnes Sharp; grandmother, Mary Yanson, grandmother, Cathy Headley; great-grandfather, Frank Ferrillo; and several aunts and uncles, cousins and great aunts and uncles.

Mary Chris Skeldon – Mary Chris Skeldon, former Director of Communications at the National Exchange Club Headquarters Office, passed away surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 23, 2015, following an 18-year battle with breast cancer. Mary Chris was born to Ralph and Sophie Zychowicz, first-generation immigrants from Poland and lived her entire life in the Toledo area. She graduated from the University of Toledo with a bachelor’s degree in communication. Prior to joining staff of The National Exchange Club in January, 2011, Mary Chris had a long, impressive career in public service. She began working with the City of Toledo when she was 16 years old, working at the puppet theatre at Ottawa Park. For the next 40 years, she worked for the City in numerous capacities. Mary Chris helped start the City’s recycling program and was the first Recycling Coordinator. She was the Public Information Officer for Toledo City Mayors Carty Finkbeiner and Jack Ford. U.S. Congress Woman Marcy

Kaptur commented: “As wife, mother, friend and dedicated public servant, Mary Chris Zychowicz Skeldon lived to give life to others. Her strong family and her professional pursuits have built our City into a more gracious and enduring community. Mary Chris embodies the words ‘a mother for us all.’” Although Mary Chris was a member of The National Exchange Club staff for a relatively short period of time, she made a tremendous impact, which changed the tone and direction of our communication efforts to make it be more about the member. She was very instrumental in advancing a polished and professional look for all communications-related items. 2013/2014 National President Don Wright commented that Mary Chris offered great ideas that moved Exchange forward, and provided invaluable assistance in formulating and promoting his message of Parading the Spirit of Exchange with Passion and Commitment. She left employment at The National Exchange Club in June, 2013. When first diagnosed with cancer in 1997, Mary Chris had stage-four breast cancer and was told she had a year to live. She received a bone-marrow transplant at Cleveland Clinic and remained cancer-free for the next 13 years. When the cancer returned in 2011, Mary Chris underwent various clinical drug trials through the Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University in Detroit. Eventually, due to significant side effects of recent treatments, she stopped taking the treatments about a month ago. Mary Chris lived to see her daughter, Maureen, marry Benjamin Hildebrand on Friday, May 22, at her bedside in Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Her appreciation for life, positive outlook and fighting spirit are cherished by her family.

From 2014 to 2015, Mary Chris served as president of the board of directors of Susan G. Komen Northwest Ohio. Executive Director Mary Westphal said her leadership was a “game-changer” for the foundation because of her empathy with others who had fought breast cancer. During the time Mary Chris was president, the foundation saw a quarter-million-dollar increase in revenues. At the Komen 20th anniversary Pink Ribbon Gala in 2013, she was honored with a standing ovation. She told guests she took her doctor’s advice, which was “you stay in life and leave the cancer to me.” Surviving are her husband, Martin; sons, Mark and John; daughter, Maureen Hildebrand (Ben); brothers, Ralph and Michael Zychowicz; sister, Carol Dupuis; and three grandchildren. A memorial mass was celebrated at GESU Church, Thursday, May 28. The family suggests tributes to Susan G. Komen Foundation at: http://ww5.komen.org/kl.html. Messages of condolences may be sent to: Martin Skeldon, 4762Carskaddon, Toledo, Ohio 43615.
