Honours

Good afternoon, and welcome to WaltonLane for today’s Southern CombinationFootball League, Division Two fixtureagainst Rottingdean Village. We extend a warm welcome to the visitingplayers, officials and supporters who havemade the journey from the Brighton area, and to match referee, Anthony O’Brien, from Lancing. They say a week is a long time in football –and none more so than at our club bothon-and-off the pitch.Four League games in the space of ninedays has resulted in four wins and 26 goalsfor in the process, including a 15-1 rout ofstrugglers, Ferring.Marco Giambelardini has already weighedin with ten League goals – only one off histotal for the whole of last season in allcompetitions! It’s unfair to single Gambo out however, asit’s been a fantastic collective effort, withthe side playing with real cohesion andpurpose, and essentially taking theirchances with the goals being equallyshared about – the likes of Jake Lafferty,Graeme Dowden, Neil Redman, AlexBarnes – and new signing, Ollie Gilbert;Louis Bell’s notched two-in-two, including areal pearler on the volley against Clympingon Bank Holiday Monday. Also pleasing to see 16-year-old BrandonEmery make an assured senior debut atright-back against Montpelier Villa - and goon to retain his place against Clymping –both under the watchful eye of stand-inboss, James Wilson, with Andy away.

Obviously it’s still very early days, and wewon’t be getting ahead of ourselves –Rottingdean of course came here lastseason and won (0-1), and have also startedvery well this term – taking maximumpoints from three of their opening fourgames – including an impressive three-nilopening day victory at Cowfold.Danny Mullen’s reserves travelled toSholing in their second Wyvern East fixture, and had some positives to take despite a6-1 defeat.Sholing’s first team of course won the FAVase only two seasons ago. It’s early days for a team still gelling withevery game a big learning curve at achallenging level, but one as a club we werekeen to make to improve standards. We arecertainly looking forward to welcomingsome of the bigger names to Walton Laneas the season progresses, includingPetersfield Town, Newport IoW and ofcourse, Sholing themselves.Danny’s signed former Havant &Waterlooville academy player,Luke Woolcombe alongside Sam Helps andre-signed Jack Antony, as well as makinghimself available again to bolster his squadahead of their trip to Totton & Eling today inthe John Stimpson Memorial Shield.Off the pitch, we are delighted to welcomeAutomatic Gate Systems as our new firstteam kit sponsor, and thank RogerWeymouth for backing us this season. Newkit is now on order, expecting it to be readylate September. Also joining us as kit sponsor for the under16’s is Portsmouth Aviation. Our thanks toSimon Escott for agreeing to sponsor newtracksuits and rain jackets for the squad, and to Rick Kennett and Nicki Webb formaking this happen.Phoenix Rising Removals have been addedto our growing sponsor roster as PlayerSponsor to new centre-half James Colinese.Enjoy the game and thank you for yoursupport!

Southern Combination Football League -Division 2

By Alan Price

Bosham moved to the top of table thisweek with two absorbing wins againstMontpellier Villa - and Clymping, on awarm Bank Holiday Monday in their firsthome game of the season.Marco Giambelardini had grabbed a hat-trick against the Villa on Saturday tomove to the top of the league scorerschart at this early stage and looked tomaintain that spot going into the secondgame in three days against a Clympingside who have had mixed fortunes intheir first few games.Quarter of an hour had elapsed whenBosham deservedly got their noses infront through Alex Barnes. The diminutive wing man had missedthe away trip to Montpellier onSaturday but returned with a vengeanceto help inspire the reds toward anotherthrilling win.Barnes latched onto a sublime throughball from Giambelardini and then, aftercutting into the box, fired across thediving effort of keeper, Jordan Winter, and into the far bottom corner of thenet.Bosham were lifted and Clymping had tofind another gear if the game wasn’tgoing to get away from them.Jordan Varza looked sharp up front forthe visitors and made Bosham shotstopper, Kieran Magee, pull off a coupleof smart saves to keep the reds in front,

whilst the attack also continued to findgaps in the visitors defence, and creatednumerous chances.Even a bounty of corners close to theinterval proved fruitless, much to themanagement’s frustration. The second period started with theblues imposing themselves on thematch and Bosham somewhat, takingtheir foot off the gas.Clymping deservedly got back on levelterms just after the hour mark whenCharles Lowdell slid in at the back stick,to heave the ball into the back of theBosham net.Having absorbed a stern period ofpressure the Robins upped their tempoand soon had the game at their mercywhen Giambelardini netted with a swiftturn an shot in the box, leaving Winterrooted to the spot and with just over aquarter of the match left to run Boshamtails were up.Next, Louis Bell smashed in a sensationalthird for the hosts. The ball came to Bell just outside thebox, who controlled, chipped the ballover the advancing defender and thenunleashed an unstoppable volley intothe roof of the net for his second goal inconsecutive games. In the final minute Giambelardinigrabbed a fourth, with Clympingflagging, to put the gloss on the result.Graeme Dowden made a surging rundown the left and then squared the ballneatly, into the path of his fellow strikerwho shot expertly on the turn into theback of the net.It was job perfectly done by the Robins -- who now sit proudly on top of thetable with their perfect start still intact.Bosham: Magee, Emery, Gilbert, Docherty,Fewell, Bulbeck, Bell, Dowden, Barnes,Giambelardini, Lafferty. Subs: Redman,Woolcombe.
