RIVERSIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL
ISSUE NO 20
4 JULY 2019
10 weeks – where did that time go!
There have been some amazing learning and opportunities happening throughout
the school which highlighted our work in inquiry and our school wide
commitment to building thinkers, collaborators, communicators, researchers and
self managers.
In Kinder they investigated how things change.
In Prep they were making connections to special places involving looking at the
ways to improve the Prep area.
In Grade 1 the big question was around the weather and its impact on daily lives.
Grade 2’s investigated the impact humans have in the environment and explored
ways they could make a difference at a school level.
Grade 3’s focused on our nature space as part of what natural things keep our
planet working.
Grade 4’s went exploring – historically that is.
Grade 5 took an historical stance to determine Australia’s story.
And Grade 6 voted in a new political party as part of developing an understanding
of our democratic process. They also pondered is Australia’s history fair for
them.
A special congratulations to our students for really engaging in a curious and
creative way.
Thank you to parents for your support – it really makes a difference to work
together to achieve the very best for your child.
But a special thank you to all the staff at Riverside Primary who work as a team
and give so much extra.
I would like to acknowledge our school attendants who have maintained a clean
and safe environment whilst some other schools have been impacted by industrial
action.

FRENCH POETRY COMPETITIONS
Once again, Riverside Primary entered the “Concours” run by
the Alliance Francaise de Hobart. All the Grade 5 and 6 children
learnt a poem entitled “L’Ogre au petits pois” by Monique Hion.
After a few lessons of learning the meaning, rehearsing their
expression and perfecting their accents, those who felt most
confident were filmed. Eight students’ recitals were entered into
the competition and the results were delivered earlier this week.
Poppy Walker, Ahlia Norton-Smith and Quy Tran all received
“une mention honorable”, while Aishwarya Ravichandran went a
step further, taking out second place with excellent expression
and near perfect pronunciation. Parents of Gr5/6 children, why
not conduct a quick experiment. Give your children the first line
“Je suis un Ogre”, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were able
to recite the whole poem to you. Congratulations to all who
were courageous enough to recite their poems in front of their
class.
Congratulations to these sporting stars:
Jordan Bezemer, Tomas Brozek, Eli Grant, Kampbell Jarman who will
represent the U12 NTJSA at the Kanga Cup in Canberra in the school
holidays.
Caleb Brewer and Lucas Wootton are off to WA in early August to
compete with the State U12 Football teams.
NAIDOC Week
We are a week early but our Education team focusing on Aboriginal
and Torres Straight Islanders set up a museum for classes to explore.
The range of activities showing the aboriginal connection with the land
was amazing.
French Flair
Congratulations to our budding French stars who were successful in a
French poetry competition. More details in newsletter.
All Schools Cross Country
Omission from last week’s newsletter. Chloe Harper was 10th in 9
year old girls and Mitchell Mundy placed 10th in 10 year old boys. Also
Aurora De Boer was 5th, not 6th as mentioned last week.
Staff Changes
Unfortunately we farewell our Chaplain, Victoria Small, who has had
to resign due to personal reasons. Victoria had a positive impact at
Riverside in a short time.
Mrs Robyn Lake will be on leave in the first 3 weeks of Term 3.
Happy holidaying.
Stay safe.

SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY
READERS’ CUP
Last week on the 26th of June Riverside’s winning, Readers’
Cup team, the Bookie Babies, participated in the inter-
school competition at Summerdale Primary School. In a
group of six the girls, Angel Murray, Aishwarya
Ravichandran, Demi Giarrusso, Danika Finearty, Kate
Carter and Matilda Reilly, completed a series of tasks
including a quiz, an extra book challenge and their creative
presentation.
We ended up finishing 4th by half a point out of 14 schools.
We received full marks in our creative presentation along
with a 9 out of 10 for the extra book challenge, in our quiz
we scored 34 of 54. It was an amazing experience and we
all felt we gained a lot out of it. We all had to work equally
in our team and had a lot of fun working together. Some of
the books we read were part of a series and we all wanted
to read the next book in the series. It was so much fun
working together and although it could be stressful
everything was such an amazing opportunity and we
recommend that everyone give it a go.
Bookie Babies (Angel Murray, Aishwarya Ravichandran,
Demi Giarrusso, Danika Finearty, Kate Carter and Matilda
Reilly)
From 24 June to 5 July Grade 3-5 participated in the Swimming and
Water Safety Program at the Launceston Aquatic Centre. This two-
week intensive program is aimed at teaching students ways of being
safe in an aquatic environment as well as supporting them with the
stroke technique and confidence in the water.
For those students who were confident in the water, the program was
about educating students on the difference between survival strokes
and competitive strokes, whilst looking at stroke correction. These
students worked hard on mastering these strokes with swimming
instructors doing multiple drills to eliminate error in stroke technique.
As part of the program, students spent time discussing the importance
of boat safety before participating in a practical experience. Students
learnt how to be safe if there ever was an emergency whilst boating
or in an aquatic environment. This experience opened students minds
into why it is so important to have safety checks complete before
heading out for a day on the water.
At the start of the swimming block there were many students who
had very little prior experience in water and found this experience
quite daunting. However, I was extremely impressed with their
strength and resilience to give it their best shot. Swimmers became a
lot more confident and were able to perform survival skills in the
water such as floating and sculling.
As a student from the University of Tasmania I was lucky enough to
be chosen to gain practical experience at Riverside Primary School
working with Anita Batty. Having two weeks in the school followed
by two weeks in the aquatic environment helped me understand how
students react in different environments where their senses are often
heightened. I was so impressed with all the students and how hard
they work to achieve their goals. Riverside is such an active school
which made my time in the Physical Education department a very
rewarding experience.
