CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
• Hospitality business are open 365 days a year and twenty-four hours a day.• It depends heavily on shift work (morning and afternoon)• Has a graveyard shift (starts from 10:00 pm and until 6:00 am)• Produce guest satisfaction • Products of the hospitality business are intangible and perishable.

Until the late 1950’s, management personnel in the hospitality industry were not normally college educated. Those who are interested in hospitality management typically began their careers by taking lower-level jobs to learn the business and eventually worked their way up through the organization.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
HOSPITALITY- derived from the Latin word hospitare, meaning “to receive as a guest”. HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT- involves the planning, organizing, directing and
controlling of human and material resources within lodging, restaurants, travel and tourism.
HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY- comprises of business that provide accommodation, travel, food and
beverage and entertainment to the traveling public.
HOTEL INDUSTRY- refers to business that offer lodging or accommodation in conjunction with food
and entertainment

DELUXE HOTEL- is upscale and typically costs more than the average accommodation
STANDARD- means the most basic room, standard amenities and furnishings
ECONOMY- with affordable and basic needs of staying in a hotel
FRONT OF THE HOUSE- refers to the department or personnel that works with direct contact with guest
BACK OF THE HOUSE- refers to the department or personnel that performs behind the
scene.
