Chair’s Message Let’s begin a dialogue…

I’m your new AWS NJ Section Chairman and I come to you asking for help. As the Sales Manager of a well-established north Jersey welding supply distributor, I currently manage a group of inexperienced customer service people who need training and are hungry for industry knowledge.

September 16, 2015 Meeting Info

Building the 9/11 Memorial Monument

Speaker: Joe Moretti Jr., Co-ownerService Metal Fabricating, Rockaway, NJ

Did you know that the landmark 9/11 Memorial Monument plaques were fabricated right here in Rockaway, New Jersey? Service Metal Fabricating was selected for the project for their fabrication capabilities and innovative ideas.

There are 152 brass plates. Each one is ten feet long by five feet high and weighs nearly 1,100 lbs. Many of the engineering aspects of the job were ‘design and build’ in nature, leaving the management team at Service Metal faced with many hidden challenges. For ex-ample, how do you keep the 1/2” bronze panels cool enough for hu-man touch in the blazing heat of July? Or keep them warm enough from icing over in the winter? How do you engineer letter centers for letters such as ‘D’, ’O’ or ‘R’, when the full perimeter of the letter has been drop cut?

You may recognize Joe Moretti from documentaries filmed on site during the productions for the History Channel or Discovery Channel. His talk will take you further into the production details from water jet cutting names into the panels, to welding the 3/4” stainless steel pedes-tals. The detail that is usually overlooked when observing the Memorial Monument is truly fascinating.
