2004 Agenda 4
2 0 0 4 O F F T O A G R E A T S T A R T
In spite of the Wintry weather, flu outbreaks, and holiday hangover..the NewYear at AWS is off to a great start. We hosted Technology seminars onMetallurgy (Thanks Carl Spaeder ) and Submerged Arc Welding by Miller
Electric. Both seminars were well attended..probably setting the stage for moreprograms later in the year.
Our first March Speaker is Steve Hand-Senior Metrologist for MAGLEV, Inc."Metrology IS NOT studying the weather..or the stars...but rather high tech meas-uring of objects. MAGLEV is currently working on a Navy program to "Predictdistortion in welding/fabrication". Only by accurately predicting distortion, canwelding begin to control or minimize it.
Years ago, early in my career, I helped trailer and mobile home manufacturersweld "camber" into their long beams by welding on top of the beam with a 7/327024 Jet Rod. This would draw or shrink the beam..allowing it to then carry a loadthat bends it back to the straight plane. On another occasion, I recall an associatewelding up a beam for one of our travel carriages..and it shrunk..thus getting himthe nickname "Dr. Shrink"..If you did not make it to the MAGLEV Open House, this would be a great chance to see the progress and understand the technologybehind the program.

STEVEN D. HANDProcess Engineer – MAGLEV, Inc.
Mr. Hand has 30 years experience inhigh accuracy measurement for large
components. He began his career in theearly 1970’s using optical tooling and laserinterferometry to calibrate large machinetools and through the years, has been a partof the evolution of metrology from the ear-liest theodolite systems to the latest sub-millimeter GPS techniques. A few specificprojects include the Clinch River andPrinceton’s Tokomak fusion reactors, theNOVA Target Sphere; NASA/LangleyHypersonic Wind Tunnel; AustralianSubmarine Corporation’s Collins ClassBoat; the U.S. Navy’s Large CavitationChannel (LCC); AEDC’s J-6 Rocket TestFacility, Caltech/MIT Laser InterferometerGravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO)and Lawrence Livermore NationalLaboratory’s National Ignition Facility(NIF).
Currently, Steve is senior metrologistfor MAGLEV, Inc. where he is responsiblefor developing the technology to fabricateand install large steel guideway beams forthe Pennsylvania Maglev Project. Relatedto these efforts, the Office of NavalResearch (ONR) has funded the demon-stration of high accuracy measurementnecessary to validate Finite ElementAnalysis (FEA) predictions of weld distor-tion in large “ship type” structures.
_____________________________________
TOPICS FOR SEM INAR
1) Metrology and the technology today(discuss the current types of equipment anduses in the industry).
2) Demonstration of the Coherent LaserRadar (CLR) that Maglev, Inc. willincorporate into the weld distortion work at1905.
3) Discuss the future of metrology forlarge component manufacturing.
