Last Meeting:What Happened last time….

We were honored to hold our last AWS Meeting at the Los Angeles Trade Tec College, this Beautiful campus; Located near the heartof downtown Los Angeles was gracious enough to host the last AWS meeting for the 2008 year. The attendees included professionals from several fields of thevast welding world, as well as distinguished members of the schools faculty. The evening kicked off with a spectacular gourmet meal, provided by the LATTC firstyear culinary arts students. This enticing buffet was a perfect way to begin the night, and it left all in attendance with a new respect for LATTC’s culinary program. Many thanks go out to Chef Steven Kasmar, Chef Joe and their students for such an outstanding job at preparing and serving this feast.

We were also honored to have sitting with us at our table Marcy Drummond, Vice President, Workforce and Economic Development, and Leticia Barajas,Dean, Academic Affairs, staff members of LATTC.

The AWS Section was fortunate to begin its night of learning with a brief look at the industries premier provider of turnaround, construction and fabrica-tion services. JV Industrial Companies has a proud and honorable tradition of excellence; this was reflected in the presentation by Mr. Ralph Worsham, The Sen-ior Quality Control Specialist Western Division, And Mr. Tony Barraza, The Western Division Quality systems manager. Tony, who is also our own AWS 2nd

Vice chairman for Los Angeles/Inland Empire, provided a brief preview on the type of real world services that JVIC conducts everyday. I say preview because JVIndustrial Company will be hosting our February meeting at its Carson facility. Where we look forward to an in-depth look at products and services that JVICprovides.

For the second half of our evening the floor belonged to our very own Mr. George Rolla, of Advanced Weldtec, Inc., The Acting AWS Chairman for LosAngeles/Inland Empire chapter. George, through his vast knowledge of the subject matter provided an in-depth look at the brand new 2008 ANSI/AWS D1.1/D1.1M. The presentation included a play by play of the proper usage of the new and improved manual. This included a breakdown of the changes and how toidentify them. As well as a refresher on the Do’s and Do not’s of the D1.1. For instance Do: Read the foreword before using a code book. And DON’T: Flipthrough aimlessly; use the Table of contents or the Index to narrow your search. This outstanding educator took this tall task and presented it in a way that onlyhe could have done, and all in attendance were fortunate for the opportunity.

The meeting concluded with a 50/50 drawing. Arguably the most entertainment we have seen at one of our meetings in a while. Prizes included gift cer-tificates ranging from $20 Starbucks gift cards to $100 Welding supply gift card. The drawing was caped off by one lucky student receiving their very own 2008D1.1/D1.1M.

The AWS would like to congratulate all of the lucky winners as well as all our new members. We extend our sincerest thanks to our AWS members andthe staff of the LATTC that made this meeting possible. We were honored to meet the new members of our student chapter and look forward to many moremeetings to come!
