Thermit® Welding – Live Demo & Presentation“How do we weld rail road tracks? – A training overview”

Speaker: Randy Dry, Orgo Thermit, Inc.

Exothermic Welding, also known as Thermit® Welding, was developed by Professor Hans Goldschmidt around 1895. In exothermic welding, a chemical reaction is used to obtain: a). Free elemental iron that is alloyed to produce a steel of defined chemical composition. b). Aluminum oxide, which is less dense that the steel, floats on top of the steel as a slag. c). A large amount of heat is released that melts the parts to be joined.

The chemical reaction that produces the heat is an exothermic reaction between aluminum powder and a metal oxide.

Thermit® is a registered trademark, and Thermit® welding is widely used all over the world to weld railway rails. One of the first rail roads in the USA to evalu-ate the use of Thermit® welding was the Delaware Hudson in 1935. To obtain sound railway welds, the ends of the rails to be Thermit® welded are preheated with a preheating burner to an orange heat, to ensure the molten steel is not chilled during the pouring process. A live demonstration of the Thermit® welding process will emphasize the suit-ability of the process for welding rail road tracks.

Randy Dry is the Director of Field Services for Orgo Thermit Inc. One of his responsibilities, as his job title implies, is overseeing the training of Thermit® welders in the field. He brings over 34 years of experience in operation and main-tenance management, primarily focused on power generation and metal fabrica-tion. Randy is a retired from the navy, where one of his jobs was managing the engine room on an aircraft carrier.

Professional Development Hours —Yours for the Taking!

One of the additional benefits of attending AWS NJ Section meetings is that you can earn credits toward professional development hours (PDHS) just by attending them. This is very valuable and convenient for those whose careers require continu-ing education. It is especially important to Welding Instructors and Certified Welding Inspectors. They can be applied toward the hours needed for Instruc-tor certifications or nine year CWI re-certifications. Certificates are given out right at the meetings.
