ABSTRACT

“The end of education is character. Education without character is useless. Earlier in gurukulas the sages took the students along with them wherever they went and taught them without conforming to any time schedule. This education was a continuous learning process. But today in schools and colleges education is limited to strict time schedules. Therefore, education has become limited. But true education, which moulds character, has no limits. When we learn about that which is “limitless,” we attain the end of education. Our character is reflected in our words, behavior and conduct in daily life. So we should speak pleasantly and not hurt others with our harsh words. It is true that we cannot always oblige, but we can speak obligingly.”

-Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

As Bhagawan has emphasized numerous times the importance of ‘Real Education’ which in other terms is ‘Educare’ – Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Jyothi project aims at providing holistic development to the children of Govt & Govt. aided schools and Sri Sathya Sai Schools across India. With the abundant grace and blessings of our most beloved Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Jyothi (SSSVJ) programme was launched on the auspicious Aaradhana Mahotsava day, on 24th April, 2016. Since then SSSVJ programme has been implemented with full vigor in the state of Karnataka in 89 schools across 31 districts by the dedicated Youth and volunteers of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, Karnataka. It is praiseworthy to note that 4 new Bhajan Mandalis have been formed in four different villages due to the effective implementation of the SSSVJ programme in these villages. We offer our sincere gratitude to Swami and all the stakeholders of SSSVJ program for making this spiritual sadhana extremely enriching for all.

This report intends to analyze the impact of SSSVJ programme in Karnataka to identify the areas where it has been effective in reaching out to various stakeholders such as students, teachers and parents along with identifying the areas of improvement.

The findings have also helped us to come up with a set of recommendations based on the data analysis done on the collated responses from the District Youth Coordinators, SSSVJ volunteers and SSSVJ school principal/teachers. Visual representation is also derived from the responses and presented in this document to show the holistic view of the impact of SSSVJ activities within a sample set of schools.

The primary goal of the Sri Sathya Sai National Leadership Programme for Self Transformation being the internalization of the knowledge, assimilation and deriving wisdom out of this process that shall aid in self-transformation at an individual level and the same has also helped us – the team members of the project to equip with tools and techniques that has tremendously helped each one of us to tread the path of transformation through inner enquiry and discrimination. We have also listed the same in this project document.

3.1 Within Scope (area, beneficiaries, timeline, others)

We intend to define the Scope with respect to the stakeholders that were engaged during the survey – such as a)District youth coordinators (DYCs), b)SSSVJ Volunteers and c) School Principal or Teacher.

The first of questionnaire was addressed to DYCs and was centered on identifying the schools and categorizing them into 4 types – Energize, Empower, Equip & Evolve.

The second set of questionnaire involved conducting a survey for SSSVJ Volunteers and SSSVJ School Principal/Teacher to identify areas of strength and weaknesses. And also to get first-hand account of functioning of SSSVJ in respective schools. The data so fetched is used to analyze and come up with a set of Recommendations for efficient implementation of SSSVJ across Karnataka. Thus, this analysis will also be helpful in future in making SSSVJ more enriching for individual and societal transformation.

3.2 Out of Scope (tasks not included in the Project Charter)

We have not considered collecting data from SSSVJ school students, parents and villagers due to the ongoing pandemic situation which restricted our movements.

LEVEL-I Data Collection & Analysis: In the initial phase of the project, a questionnaire was shared with the District Youth Coordinators who are the responsible members for carrying out SSSVJ activities by including other members of the adopted Samithi and any other volunteers. This questionnaire helped to classify the 57 schools thus surveyed into the 4 phases of SSSVJ growth viz., Energize, Empower, Equip & Evolve as listed below.

Fig 5.3: Categorization of Schools

Energize – Student-centric; where the primary focus is on providing value based education to children through Balvikas classes, value games etc.

Empower – Along with student-centric activities, the other stakeholders of SSSVJ such as Teachers are also engaged in programs such as Teachers’ training, Balvikas training for school teachers, Guru Vandana etc.

Equip – In this phase we slowly move beyond the school premises and start engaging with one of the most important stakeholders of SSSVJ – the parents. Since the environment at home becomes an extremely crucial factor in overall development of a child, programs such as Parenting, medical camps for parents, and health & hygiene programs for parents of SSSVJ school children are carried out.

Evolve – This is a phase where we involve the larger village ecosystem under SSSVJ and formulate programs to engage villagers, village youth via programs such as Sri Sathya Sai Satyanarayana Vratha Pooja at a village temple, Household Bhajans, village festival and procession. Through these activities and involvement of all stakeholders starting from children to villagers the project will be self-

Microsoft tools such as Microsoft word and Microsoft Excel were used extensively right from the initiation of the project to prepare project charter, project plan and definition. Microsoft word and excel were also used to compile first set of questionnaire that was shared with the District Youth coordinators for the Phase-I of data collection.

Gantt chart was created for the sake of identifying action items by individuals and tracking the tasks against the time scheduled.

Google forms were used to conduct survey for Phase-II of data collection from SSSVJ volunteers and SSSVJ school principal/teachers.

Python programming language was used to develop code that would populate the graphs based on the dataset for analysis. Pycharm 2020.2 was used to write the code, test and execute.

Listed below are the tools used.

• Microsoft Office – Word & Excel • Google Forms • Google Drive • Google Docs, Google Charts • PyCharm 2020.2 • The code is compiled and executed in PyCharm 2020.2 to generate bar

graphs and pie chart required for data analysis.

In this section, the details pertaining to the findings from the data collection are detailed out along with graphs and charts.

7.1 LEVEL-I Data Set Data Analysis: Categorization of Schools into 4 phases Plot Set-1

Analysis Description

We are plotting the reach of SSSVJ activities across various schools with respect to 4 phases each associated with a stakeholder – such as student, teacher, parent and villager. In Y axis of the graph we have number of schools catering to the activities for each of the 4 above mentioned phases of SSSVJ.

Page 32: IMPACT ANALYSIS of SRI SATHYA SAI VIDYA JYOTHI (SSSVJ ...

SRI SATHYA SAI NATIONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME FOR SELF TRANSFORMATION

2020 @Copyright SSSO All Rights Reserved Page 32

Outcome • The plot shows most of the SSSVJ school have excellent student centric

reach with a 100% success rate. • The reach for the next two stakeholders that is teachers and parent centric

activities is at least 40% lower than the reach of student centric activities that is they have a 60% success rate.

• Last but not the least we have found the reach for Village centric activities is moderate due to activities such as Pallakki procession, Sri Sathya Sai Satyanarayana Vrata Pooja and thus achieving 80% success.

Analysis

Description In the above Bar Graphs, we are plotting the distribution of SSSVJ various activities specific to each Level of SSSVJ across various schools. Level-1 refers to SSSVJ activities which are Student centric, similarly Level-2, Level-3 and Level-4 refers to Teacher, Parent and Village centric activities, respectively. Here we are plotting number of SSSVJ schools/SSSVJ villages that are having a specific activity. This is plotted for all the 4 in each level.

Outcome • PHASE-I Energize: First bar graph is for student centric activities. BalVikas

is the most successful in this segment and are being conducted across almost all the SSSVJ schools in Karnataka.

o Other activities such as Notebook/Stationary distribution, Sai Protein distribution, English/Math training and medical camps also has a very high reach if not present in all SSSVJ school.

o Only activity which needs improvement in terms of reach is student centric competitions such as in Drawing/Rangoli.

• PHASE-II Empower: Second bar graph is for teacher centric activities. BalVikas training are being done for nearly 75% of the SSSVJ schools; Guru Vandana is being done for 50% of the SSSVJ school and teacher centric subjects such as English/Maths/Computer Science training is being done in least number of SSSVJ schools i.e., 14% only.

• PHASE-III Equip: Third bar graph is for parent centric activities. 7.3 Challenges & Recommendations The challenges listed below are the ones shared by the SSSVJ volunteers as part of the survey conducted. Listed against them are the recommendations from the project team to mitigate those challenges.

Sl# Challenges faced Recommendations 1 Lack of volunteers and no goal

oriented/structured programme has been set up.

• Create awareness programs at samithi and district level about SSSVJ to attract volunteers

• Structured program is shared in terms of calendar of activities that can be performed on a monthly basis which can be referred other than use cases from successful districts

2 Communication/Language difference makes it hard to interact with students.

• Take help from a SSSVJ volunteer who can speak in local language and prepare well in advance the activity/class you would conduct so the volunteer helping is aware and can do justice to the program

3 Financial support is required to conduct certain activity.

• This needs to be discussed with the Samithi Convenor under whose samithis the SSSVJ school is adopted. Having said that the primary goal of SSSVJ is to impart human values and that requires no financial support.

4 Villagers support is required in conducting training to them.

• As Swami always emphasized it is important to connect with villagers in their own ways such as striking a conversation on current affairs and then slowly start creating awareness about SSSVJ via door-to-door campaign on health & hygiene or

Page 47: IMPACT ANALYSIS of SRI SATHYA SAI VIDYA JYOTHI (SSSVJ ...

parenting. 5 We are willing to support

disciplined children, as volunteers are less it's very hard to control the class during any activity.

• Beginning the class with silent sitting or jyothi meditation for a short duration has proven to be effective in tackling these challenges

6 Half of the teachers in the school are not showing interest in SSSVJ programme

• Firstly it is important to strike a chord with the teachers and talk to them informally every week. Also important is to at least visit the school once a week so there is no long gap and they get familiar with our activities

7 There is a need to conduct Balvikas classes by teachers themselves in school

• Already Balvikas training was conducted for SSSVJ school teachers and the same can be done for new teachers too

• In order to make it sustainable, the Balvikas gurus need to hand hold the teachers when they take Balvikas classes and assist them in story-telling, value games etc until they are able to teach independently

8 Awareness needs to be created among parents about the importance of the programme

• Parenting session can be planned for parents of SSSVJ children

• Medical camps exclusively for parents has proven to be a great platform for awareness creation

• Door-to-door campaign, house-hold bhajans are few of the activities that can be conducted

7.3.1 Recommendations/Suggestions by SSSVJ Volunteers

1. Goal oriented SSSVJ programme is required to achieve results.

2. Financial support/Donation is required in availing computers and projectors to enhance pragmatic thinking.

3. Frequency of SSSVJ activities has to be set to at least twice a week, depending on volunteers’ availability.

4. Reward and recognize the students who perform well on monthly basis. For example: Provide notebooks/uniforms for the best performer in a month or so.

5. Spoken English class is mandatory in government/public schools.

6. More number of volunteers are needed to keep SSSVJ continued

7. SSSVJ day should be conducted once in a year throughout the schools, to appreciate Volunteers, Teachers, Villagers and panchayat leaders.

8. Hands-on assignments should be assigned to ignite creative spark amongst students.

9. SSSVJ volunteers should be imparted training on basic leadership and management skills.

7.3.2 Recommendations/suggestions by SSSVJ School Teachers

1. Industrial visit/Tour should be arranged once in a year (Ex: Visit to military establishments, Collectorate's office, Police academies, Fire training institutes)

2. Regular conduction of SSSVJ activities (frequency of conduction).

3. To get the expected results resources like animated / picture books, puzzles or brainstorming activity materials, drawing kits and tablets need to be used.

4. More volunteers required for English, Maths and science education.

5. Volunteers should conduct at least 2 classes in a week, both for teachers and students.

6. Focus should be on imparting moral values and encouraging students to participate in sports activities.

Page 49: IMPACT ANALYSIS of SRI SATHYA SAI VIDYA JYOTHI (SSSVJ ...

SRI SATHYA SAI NATIONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME FOR SELF TRANSFORMATION

2020 @Copyright SSSO All Rights Reserved Page 49

7. Need to conduct unique activities quarterly like Walk for values, Festival of Joy, exhibition or project work on BalVikas classes.

8. Practical teaching methods should be implemented at least during SSSVJ classes.

8.1 Collective learning (Project) At the very outset we knew we need to respect each other and bond well as Swami envisages and go about executing this project in a spirit of unity and team work. This helped mitigate few of the challenges faced initially such as clarity and way forward in the project.

The biggest learning in executing this project has been that sometimes we need to pursue and keep pushing to meet the goals even if we tend to lack the expertise in doing so such as an attempt in carrying out certain basic tasks as first-timer needs to be with full vigor and enthusiasm even if we know we are going to make mistakes on the way.

8.2 Individual learning (Self Transformation) Venkatesh Patil (SSSNLPST-2020-M106) – The quality of surrender to Swami and constantly keep working on the goal was the one thing that I strived to develop as there were challenges pertaining to time and resources when deadline approached. I believe that Time Management in my case appears to be a very critical factor and for me surrender to Bhagawan and praying to Him is a very important recourse in spite of all the work we do.

I think I need to also learn how to groom youngsters to get certain tasks executed or completed and the project helped me to identify right expectations from individuals.

Abhishek Parikshya (SSSNLPST-2020-M001) – During project I have come to know about this wonderful SSSVJ initiative for Government school and Villages in Karnataka by Swami. Together as a team we have worked on planning and execution of this project and finally bring it to conclusion with great teamwork and cooperation. I have learnt a lot from all the team members in terms of patience and perseverance to complete the project deliverables throughout various engagements towards personal and professional fronts. Thank you Swami and all for giving me this opportunity.

Anil Ramdugu (SSSNLPST-2020-M011): During the course of the project I realized that I need to be organized and time managing individual.

We followed “divide and conquer” principle to get the most of the work done. It’s a good experience in total.

Sai Mohan Krishna (SSSNLPST-2020-M072): SSSVJ helped me experience Swami's miracles through the achievements it made, like many schools forming their Bhajana Mandalis, Students changing their habits, volunteer's selfless service, teachers and parents exhibiting their happiness with the change that SSSVJ has bought into the schools and their lives. The thought that Swami has implanted in everyone that, "all are equal and we are all embodiments of love, look at the real Self, not the body or the mind" is driving force for us to do selfless service. It inspired me a lot experiencing Swami's presence at every step of doing the project. With his blessings I believe I could work wonders further in my life.
