Illinois Airports Monitoring Guide Illinois has 18 Controlled Airports (with full or part time Control Towers) and 97 Public uncontrolled airports. There are also dozens of private landing strips, heli-stops and other facilities that have no regular radio presence. Controlled Airports usually have an assigned Tower, Ground and ATIS (Automated Traffic Information Service) frequency and many have assigned Clearance Delivery channels. Clearances may often be handled on the Ground channel even if a Clearance channel is assigned to the airport. Uncontrolled airports are usually assigned a Unicom channel for pilots to use to communicate with each other to state their intentions regarding take-off and landings and for exchange of weather and airport conditions. Assignment of a Unicom channel does not mean that there is someone monitoring or answering the channel on the ground. Pilots most often use Unicom as they advise when they are entering the pattern or intending to leave the area. Part 1 of this Profile lists all Controlled Airports except O’Hare and Midway. They include frequency information, aerial photographs and the current (as of July 2007) FAA Diagrams. Part 2 of this Profile lists all Public Uncontrolled Airports in Illinois, along with the Identifiers, Unicom channels assigned and Approach channels most often used. Some of these airports also have Non-Directional Beacons, these are also listed when known.

O’Hare Airport is undergoing a massive reconstruction, starting in 2006 and predicted for completion in or about 2012. This includes the building of 6 parallel E-W runways to be numbered 9L/27R, 9C/27C and 9R/27L on the north part of the airport and 10L/28R, 10C/28C and 10R/28L on the south. 4R/22L and 4L/22R will also be retained, while 14R/32L and 14L/32R will be decommissioned. 18/36 has already been removed. As of Fall 2008 9R/27L has been changed to 10/28, the original 9L/27R is now 9R/27L and the old 9L/27R is now 9R/27L. The new 9L/27R at the north edge of ORD has now been opened. Midway was Chicago’s main airport for years until O’Hare opened in the late 1950’s. Soon thereafter most airline operations ceased at Midway and it was close to being closed. A renaissance occurred in the 1980’s when discount airlines Southwest and Midway Airlines started flying from the south side airport. Today, after a new terminal and parking facility was built and with a new CTA line serving it Midway is as busy as it has been in decades, serving more than 17 million passengers a year.

Chicago Executive Airport, formerly known as Palwaukee Municipal Airport, is owned by the Village of Wheeling and City of Prospect Heights. When it was owned by George Preister it was known as the busiest private airport in the world. It is a primary reliever airport for O’Hare, and sees hundreds of operations daily from single engine pleasure craft to full size business jets, as well as several helicopters. Two large FBO’s provide a full range of aviation services. The operating authority of CEA has graciously provided a viewing area off of Old Palatine Road west of Milwaukee Avenue with parking and bleachers to allow enthusiasts a safe place to watch aircraft operations.
