Combe racing circuit.The collector of classic racing cars

will drive his Maserati 250F, a ma-chine in which legendary five-timeworld champion Juan Manuel Fangioclaimed title success in 1957.

Nick acquired the car almost byaccident. He said: “I was buying an-other car from an American, an ERAR10B, and he wanted to sell the twocars as a package.

“I could see why. The 250F was abasket case, and a good way to getrid of something like that is tosell a complete car along with ap ro j e c t . ”

In 2009, the 250F was voted thegreatest racing car ever by read-ers of Octane magazine. So thelunchtime demonstration lapswhich Nick will perform on Sundaywill provide a special opportunity forspectators at Castle Combe.

The day’s events have a classictheme and get under way at 8.30am.

There are races for Big Healeys,pre-war sports cars from the Vintage

Sports Car Club, Formula Juniorsingle seaters, Jaguars and sportscars from the 1950s.

Admission prices are £15 per adult,and £10 per OAP.

Driven to distraction

� PANICKERS. Intimidated easilyand recognisable by apreying-mantis-style positionhunched over the wheel, theirdriving is often extreme – eithertoo slow or too fast, andcharacterised by indecision, ordecisions made and acted uponwithout due care.

Besides lorry drivers, who oftendo exactly as they please andexpect us mere car drivers todefer, avoid and brake in order toaccommodate their wishes,panickers are my least favoureddrivers – especially on am o t o r w a y.

Last week I wrote about apersonalised number plate whichtickled me – M4 YUK. This week, Iwish I had it displayed it, for saidmotorway was the location for anunpleasant experience.

Heading back to Bristol after aweekend in the valleys of SouthWales, we were somewherearound Newport when my friend,who was driving, narrowlyavoided a shunt with a silver FordPuma.

The Puma was in the outsidelane and fractionally behind at the

time my friend was pulling out –having indicated her intention –into the middle lane to overtake al o r r y.

As we crossed the lane divide,the Puma, without indicating,suddenly swung into the middlelane and would have clipped ushad my friend not been keeping agood eye on the mirrors.

Luckily for us, we had not yetdrawn level with the lorry we weretrying to overtake, and had roomto drop in behind it.

The Puma swept past,seemingly oblivious.

A second or two later, I noticedthe reason for its suddenm a n o e u v re .

Two sporty-looking efforts hadbeen bearing down upon it, andthe Puma driver had beenintimidated into taking action –without warning – to avoid them.
