This third-generation Audi A3 Sportback ismuch bigger than before and rides on adifferent chassis from its predecessor. Witha thoroughly-modern concept andexecution, the Sportback follows a trendline established by the two prior modelsand is guaranteed to do well.

IF the current-generationthree-door Audi A3 looks similarto its predecessor, the same can-not really be said of its five-doorsibling, the A3 Sportback. Sig-nificantly bigger than before, thisA3 changes the rules of the game

a little. It seems that much more com-fortable as a model in its own rightrather than being a sideshow to theregular A3.

Most Sportback customers will selecta diesel, either a 105PS 1.6 TDI unit –that makes 60mph in 10.9 seconds, witha top speed of 121mph – or the 2.0 TDI.Many will want this in 150PS form – bu tAudi has also developed it in 184PSguise, a model which gets to 62mph injust 7.4 seconds.

The next best seller is the 122PS 1.4TFSI petrol unit (9.3 seconds/126mph)which is outdone at the pumps by the140PS version of this engine. Why? Be-cause that unit features cylinder-on-de-mand technology, which enables thepowerplant to run on only two of itsfour cylinders at low- to medi-um-throttle speeds.

The few potential buyers not servedby this portfolio can opt for theentry-level 105PS petrol 1.2-litre unit.And there is a 180PS 1.8 TFSI petrolvariant that is designed to be mated toAu d i ’s silky-smooth seven-speed S tron-ic dual-clutch auto transmission, inwhich form it can make rest to 62mphin 7.2. At the top of the range lies the300PS S3 quattro hot-hatch model, withits 2.0 TFSI petrol engine.

This chassis is significantly longerthan the previous-generation A3 Sport-

back, plus there is an electromech-anically-assisted steering system and anext-generation stability-control pack-age. The optional Audi drive-select sys-tem lets the driver vary the throttleresponse, steering weighting and,where the S tronic transmission ispresent, the gearbox shift points.

As for styling, it looks leaner andcleaner. The interior will not generatemuch awe, but the ultra-thin pop-upsat-nav screen is a welcome touch. Lug-gage space out back is 380 litres, risingto 1,220 litres with the seats fol-ded.

Prices start at around£20,000 – about £620 morethan the A3 – and rangeup to around the £30,000mark, with customerschoosing between SE,Sport and S line trimlevels. You will be temptedby the numerous options –like the LED interior light-ing, a panoramic glass sunroof,sports seats, heated seats, deluxe elec-tronic climate control and an adaptivelighting system for the xenon-plusheadlights, which can be supplementedwith variable headlight range control.

Where Audi has made the biggeststrides in recent years is in connectiv-ity of electronic systems – and the A3fully embraces these advances. Theconnect system bundles all infotain-ment technologies that let the drivernetwork with the internet, infrastruc-ture and other vehicles. The centralcomponent is the mobile-phone pre-paration. It produces the connection to

the internet and passengers can con-veniently surf and email with up toeight mobile devices via an integratedwireless local area network hotspot.Watch your roaming charges though.

For the driver, the mobile-phone pre-paration brings features such as nav-igation with images from Google Earth,a web radio function, a Googlepoints-of-interest search by voice con-trol and Google Street View.

There is also an Audi onlinetraffic-information system that takes

the movement data from the thou-sands of smartphones and nav-

igation units that aretravelling on the road and

can inform you of averagespeeds, predicted journeytimes and recommendedre ro u t e s.

The A3 Sportback pinsits colours to the mast of

improved efficiency andposts numbers that are more

impressive than its already-cred-itable forebear (see panel). That is agiven, as is the fact that it will rival thebest in class for residual values.

There are not too many cars whichmove the game on quite as relentlesslyas the Audi A3 Sportback. Bigger, light-er, better built, quicker, cleaner, morespace efficient and safer, the five-doorA3 is all of these things and more.

For some, this car might be a bit tooefficient, even a little austere. Andsome will hanker for a more involvingdrive. It is not perfect but is as close asyou could expect for a car with suchbroad appeal.
