Trailing 2-1 with time all but up, the leaders looked beaten until Nick Rugman cottoned on to a lengthy punt into the home box and led opposition defenders a merry dance before gleefully lashing the ball into the net with the last kick of an enthralling encounter. Rugman had been the man to haul Little Stoke back into the match from the penalty spot three minutes into the second half as his side’s attempt at clawing back a two-goal half-time deficit began in ear nest. Burnard acknowledged: “You al- ways have a chance of getting something when you have a player like Nick in your team. That was his tenth goal in his last five games, but we all know we got out of jail. We didn’t perform in the first half and gave ourselves an uphill struggle, although to be fair to the lads we did improve in the second half. “We always knew it would be a tough battle – we beat Ridings High 3-2 in a Bosley Cup semi-final last season, so we knew what to expect and we got it.” A scruffy opening contained pre- cious little to unsettle either camp. Home winger Daryl Cazley struck a low, but relatively tame, shot straight into the arms of away keep- er Luke Preddy, while home cus- todian Alex Heath was left relieved after crashing an attempted clear- ance against Stoke midfielder Gary Cripps, the ball corkscrewing alarmingly into the air and back towards his goal before the goalie reached up to collect on his line. The best of the opportunities was taken with aplomb on 26 minutes, when Corey Wilson lifted a perfect pass over Stoke’s stranded last de- fender and watched in delight as experienced marksman Scott Cameron sprinted forward unop- posed before lobbing the onrushing keeper from just outside the pen- alty area. With co-manager Ricky Evans doing his best to orchestrate a Little Stoke recovery with some probing passes, the hosts were on the back foot for a bit. But the visitors were rocked again eight minutes from the in- terval when Ridings High and Cameron struck again. Cazley drilled a free-kick low through the defensive wall, which Preddy could only push out into the path of the former Winterbourne United and Tytherington Rocks striker, who drove the rebound home from six yards out. It certainly wasn’t Little Stoke’s half because, a minute later, slick combination work between Todd Brunt and John Rugman ended with Nick Rugman somehow fail- ing to turn his brother’s delivery into a gaping net at the far post. Ridings High always knew the threat of a furious response from the visitors was strong, but they didn’t anticipate suffering a setback so soon into the second period. John Rugman fastened on to right-back Ross Taylor’s throw from the touchline and galloped into the right side of the penalty area, where he was upended by Ridings’ left-winger Cazley on the slide. Referee Simon Turner poin- ted to the spot and only three minutes had elapsed when Nick Rugman stroked the ball into the far corner of the net from 12 yards. Stoke were clearly boosted by their breakthrough and while their passing and approach work was crisper and more enterprising, they did have to be on guard for the occasional moment of menace on the counter by their opponents, not least through Cazley, who seemed eager to atone for his error of judge- ment in conceding the penalty. Ridings went close to restoring their two-goal cushion midway through the period, when Nick Wa- ters could only nod Cameron’s pre- cision corner into the ground and straight at Preddy. Cazley then exchanged passes with Cameron and sped clean through towards goal, only to lash a fierce attempted finish against the legs of Preddy. While it was far from one-way traffic, Ridings were enjoying the better of the late opportunities and Cazley went close again with a dip- ping edge-of-the-box free-kick after substitute Marvin Castle had been felled 20 yards out. At the other end, Little Stoke winger Craig Lancastle and John Rugman both fired in wayward at- tempts. So, it was a surprise to all at the death when reliable centre-half Ridings High 2 Little Stoke 2 Steven Hurst launched a long free-kick over defenders’ heads and deep into opposition territory, where Nick Rugman was quick to seize on hesitancy and confusion among the Ridings High ranks and dart across the box before thrash- ing a magnificent left-foot shot past the despairing clutches of the diving Heath and into the net. Away celebrations were still in full cry as referee Turner blew for the final time, to the immense frus- tration of Ridings supremo Gary Dunn, who said: “It’s gutting to have victory taken away from you like that, because we felt we’d done enough. Ridler has the last laugh as Unitedbreeze past Town in Division A

Hanham Minor League

OWEN Ridler’s star-man perform-ance was rewarded with two greatgoals as Mangotsfield UnitedUnder-11s overcame Key n s h a mTow n with an 8-0 top-division vic-t o r y.

Tom Garland, Will Ashton and SebScott all grabbed a goal apiece as thereigning champions demonstrated, with some great football, that theyhave settled well into the newnine-a-side format.

Harry Jefferies, Max Wiltshire andJames Walker all combined well atthe back.

They were ferocious in the tackle tosnuff out any threat posed by Keyn-sham’s solitary striker.

At the other end, Sam Barneyweighed in with his weekly hat-trick,but was happy to hand the match ballto the impressive Ridler.

Bristol Rovers Under-11s main-tained their unbeaten start to theseason with a 2-0 away victory overhard-working Bitton Reds in the AD iv i s i o n .

They took the lead through leadingscorer Elijah Hayden, and with starman Harvey Milton dealing witheverything Bitton could muster, andKeane Ashwood driving Rovers on, itwas only a matter of time before they

added a second goal via Miguel Freck-l e t o n’s neat side-foot finish.

Manager Kevin Ashwood singledout Stanley Dark, for his non-stopwork-rate up-front, as a key reasonfor Rovers’ latest success, whilethoughts too were with lucklessRovers player Bradley Webb, who re-cently broke his leg in school.

Thornbury Town Under-10sslipped to a narrow 3-1 defeat awayagainst Bitton in Division B.

Both teams looked to play goodpassing football in the opening gameand James Stone and Joe Pearmainwere strong in the tackle for Thorn-bu r y.

Indecision in the Town defence costthem dear, though, and they giftedBitton two sloppy goals.

Man-of-the-match Charlie Mossran his heart out and was a continualthreat for Thorns, but overall theystruggled for fluency as they fell to a2-0 defeat.

There was hope for Thornbury atthe start of the second game as thelively Aidan Ebanks was in the rightplace to lash home and give them thelead, only for Bitton to equalisestraight away via another soft goalfrom Thorns’ p e r s p e c t ive.

Town star performer Peter Greg-ory ran his socks off in defence, butdespite giving it their all on a hot day,

Thornbury were forced to settle for afrustrating 1-1 draw.

By contrast, Warmley RangersU n d e r- 1 0 s stretched their unbeatenstart to the C-Division season to sixgames with a powerful display and 8-1win over a valiant Ashton BoysColts s i d e.

Warmley produced some excellentpass-and-move football which helpedthem to a 2-0 first-game victory, striker Ben Emery scoring with acool finish and Kai Johnson adding tohis impressive tally of goals.

Rangers dominated the secondmatch with wave after wave of at-tacks. Kareem Shuman (2) scored hisfirst goals for the club and DillonMonks curled a corner straight intothe net.

Tom Williams helped himself to abrace and Lewis Parfitt completedthe scoring before gallant Ashtonpulled a late goal back in a 6-1 de-f e at .

Highridge United Under-10s andD e e r swo o d battled out a 2-2 draw, afitting outcome as both teams hadenjoyed promotion from Division Dlast year.

Jarvis Hill put the Ridge, whoseman-of-the-match George Owen wasinstrumental at the back for them,one-up with a cracking free-kick justinside the Deerswood half, before

their opponents struck back just be-fore the end of the first game to makeit 1-1.

It was Deerswood’s turn to take anearly lead in game two beforeUnited’s star man Santino Reid slot-ted home from a goalmouth scrambleto tie-up the scores again.

Reid was then frustrated by anoutstanding save by the Deerswoodkeeper as he eyed a belated winner.

Goals by the lively Jay Murray, from the penalty spot after he hadbeen upended inside the box, andArchie Denness, with a fine finishfollowing a determined run, earnedPortishead Town Under-13s a fight-ing point on the road from a 2-2second-division draw with Br adleyStoke United, who had twice takenthe lead before the break.

The visitors went close to winningit in the second half when Murray’saudacious overhead kick was just off

target, while the same player took atumble inside the area in the dyingmoments but the referee deemed aBradley Stoke defender had justmade contact with the ball.

After going down in a recentfive-goal thriller against Deerswoodin the league and making afirst-round exit in the cup againstAvon Athletic (3-1) last week, Broad-walk Under-13s had the perfect op-portunity to exact revenge on thesame visiting Avo n in the weekend’sfirst division encounter.

Avon Athletic and Bristol Spartakinvolved in an aerial battle

AVON Athletic proved too strong forBristol Spartak as they claimed acomfortable victory that includedtwo assists and a goal from LiamMatthews, although they did have toweather a spirited Spartak revival inthe second half.

The visitors got the game under-way, but just two minutes in foundthemselves a goal down. Matthewspicked the ball up in the middle of thepitch before sliding it right into thepath of Connor Davies, who un-leashed a vicious shot from thecorner of the box, beating Kyran Git-sham at his near post.

Avon doubled their lead threeminutes later when a long goal-kickfrom Lewis Brodie was flicked on byMatthews and, after latching on tothe flick-on, Jardell Hartley-Keelingheld off two challenges before dis-patching the ball left footed past Git-sham from 14 yards out.

Spar tak’s first shot came a minutelater through Tommy-Lee Tremblett, but soon the visitors were on the backfoot again as another long goal-kickfrom Brodie was flicked on by Daviesto Matthews, who drove to the bylinebefore cutting the ball back, howeverHartley-Keeling couldn’t quite findthe back of the net from ten yards outas his flicked effort struck the postand bounced clear.

Some brave defending was thenrequired from Mason Hartrey who, after taking Robbie Warden’s power-ful shot full in the face from threeyards away, leapt straight back to hisfeet and put in a brilliant slidingtackle to prevent Hartley-Keelingfrom firing home the loose ball.

Avon continued to press and sevenminutes before half timeHartley-Keeling netted his second ofthe match after latching on to AlfieBrewis through ball and cutting backonto his right foot to beat his manbefore tucking the ball past Gitshamat the near post to make it 3-0.

And bang on the half-hour markthe home side extended their lead

with a lovely team goal. Davies playedthe ball into the feet of Hartley-Keel-ing from the right and, with his backto goal, he flicked it round the cornerfor Reece Martin who unselfishlysquared it for Warden to curl in un-m a rke d .

A rare pot shot from Spartak’sTremblett in the 32nd minute hadBrodie worried for a second as thelooping effort dropped over the back-pedalling keeper, but unfortunatelyfor the visitors the ball didn’t dipenough as it dropped harmlessly overthe bar.

Hartley-Keeling came close to com-pleting his hat-trick before half timeas he reacted quickest to a duffed shotfrom Brewis, beating both defendersand Gitsham to the ball.

But, although he managed tosqueeze the ball beyond the keeper, his effort struck the post and rolledsafely behind for a goal-kick.

Avon had dominated the first half

as they pinned Spartak back, rarelyallowing the visitors out of their ownhalf, while their defence of MarcusMullin, Hayden Radford, ZachEllaway and Ollie Muxworthysnuffed out any threat of a Spartakat t a ck .

The second half started in explos-ive fashion. Twice in the opening 90seconds Spartak’s Mason McKechnietested Brodie from 25 yards, forcingthe Avon keeper into two good saves, however as the visitors pressed for-ward they got caught with too manymen up the pitch and the first timeAvon broke into the Spartak half theytook full advantage.

Martin flicked the ball right to Mat-thews who brought it down superblyon his thigh, not breaking stride as hesurged down the wing before cuttingin and firing the ball into the topcorner to make it 5-0 just two minutesinto the second half.

Seconds later, Hartley-Keeling

could have made it six after he burstdown the left and into the box, however Gitsham was quick off hisline and got down well at the striker'sfeet.

Spartak responded well though andthree minutes in they managed topull a goal back.

Robbie Tripp-Edwards jinked hisway superbly into the box from theleft, skipping past five or six chal-lenges as he worked his way to theby-line before cutting the ball back toArchie Lloyd, and the striker simplyplaced the ball into the bottom cornerfrom four yards out.

Spartak continued to press forwardand 12 minutes in they grabbed asecond. Once again it was Tripp-Ed-wards who found Lloyd from the left, but this time the striker had a lotmore to do as he brought down thecross after it flicked off a defender'shead, before brilliantly finding thetop corner to make it 5-2.

Bristol Under-18 CombinationAvon Youth League

THERE were plenty of thrills andspills for under-18s supporters toenjoy around the county as Sunday’sfixtures produced some exciting ac-tion in both league and cup.

In Bristol Central, B r o m l eyH e at h ’s 2-0 away win over S a l t fo rdColts, and Highridge United’s 5-0home defeat of Hanham Athletic, elevated them both abovethird-placed St Nicholas Colts ongoal difference, with all three teamson ten points.

Bradley Elvin, Jordan Edwards (2)and Jack Thompson (2, one pen) werethe happy Highridge marksmen, with Harry Milkins their stand-outplayer. Otis Buxton wasn’t far awayfrom adding to Highridge’s tally, while it was a second-half foul insidethe box on Bertie Kirk which led toT hompson’s cool conversion fromthe spot.

Saltford Colts remain rooted to thebottom together with Ingleside asboth sides are still to record theirfirst points.

In the South Division, Fry ClubJu n i o r s moved to the summit along-side Yatton Athletic following their3-2 victory over Bristol Spartak, while at the other end of the table,B i s h o p s t o n’s 4-2 win over fellowstrugglers Highridge United Lionslifted them off the bottom.

In the only game played in BristolNorth, Stoke Lane came away from

Thor nbury 5-2 winners to leave bothteams in mid-table.

The opening round of the GFAYouth Shield saw Longwell Greengo down 4-2 at the hands of visitingSwindon Village Bowmen. JoshD e a n’s fine free-kick and AdamT hurston’s deflected late strike gaveLongwell some consolation, al-though they were indebted to somefine saves from their keeper JohnFox which ensured the sides wentinto the interval in goalless deadlockbefore the floodgates opened after theb re a k .

Bristol Telephones c o n t i nu e dtheir good start to the season with a7-0 success against Cheltenham CS.Early goals from George Pool and an‘own goal’, albeit claimed by KyranHunt, were followed by strikes byMickey Parsons, Joe Cramner andJordan Hughes to hand ’Phones a 5-0interval advantage.

Second-half efforts from Joe Os-bourne and Pool again completed acomfortable 7-0 victory.

Winterbourne United went onebetter, dispensing of Bishop’s Cleevein emphatic 8-0 fashion throughJason Bracey’s hat-trick, CoreyH at h w ay ’s brace and Nathan Red-more, Ryan Evans and Harvey Reedstrikes. A strong defensive perform-ance, inspired by skipper Josh Dav-ies, ensured there were few worriesat the back for rampant ’Bour ne.

A minute later, Matthews almostrestored Avon’s four-goal advantagewhen he managed to get a toe on BenS we e t m a n’s lofted through ball overthe Spartak defence ahead of the ad-vancing Gitsham.

Unfortunately for the striker theball was rolling agonisingly wideand, although he managed to reach itjust before it ran out for a goal-kick,he was at an impossible angle andcould only turn the ball against thepost.

Then midway through the halfHartley-Keeling had yet anotherchance to complete his hat-trick. Mat-thews' ball in from the right found thewinger unmarked at the back postbut, instead of ducking to head theball, the striker attempted to turn itin with his thigh and failed to hit thetarget from close range.

Both Warden and then Brewisfailed to find the top corner from 25yards for Avon, before Tripp-Edwards

almost created a third for the visitorsas he threaded through his captainHarry Jones, but Brodie was quick offhis line to shut the midfielder downand deflected his effort just wide ofthe post.

In the top-flight section, Almonds-bury Saints Under-12s and BristolCity SCJ fought out a thrilling 1-1draw in their top-table clash. Bothteams battled hard to win possessionand create chances, with Will Gouldand Callum Eastwood threatening forvisiting City, whilst Saints posedproblems through Ben Lloyd andEllis Richards on the flanks.

It was a Fin Coombes goal thatbroke the deadlock for the Almondsmidway through the second half as hedarted in from the left with a finefinish.

Both teams looked solid in defencewith Saints’ Harrison Neill and MaxBarker showing up well and ColbyHawkins impressing for City.

Ten minutes before time the vis-itors levelled up when Will Gouldused his pace to get past Saints keep-er Charlie Smith and drive the ballhome, so breaching the Saints’ p ro u dclean-sheet record this season.

Brodie was called into action oncemore before the final whistle whenTripp-Edwards found Lloyd peelingleft, however the striker's effort fromjust inside the box was brilliantlytipped over by the Avon keeper.Avon Athletic: Lewis Brodie, ZachEllaway, Robbie Warden, Luke Booy,Hayden Radford, Alfie Brewis, BenSweetman, Reece Martin, JardellHartley-Keeling, Liam Matthews,Ollie Muxworthy, Connor Davies,Marcus Mullin.Bristol Spartak: Kyran Gitsham,Zak George, Josh Brown, MasonHartrey, Mason McKechnie,Tommy-Lee Tremblett, RobbieTripp-Edwards, Harry Jones, ArchieLloyd, Jake Lloyd, Mitch Naish. Avon Athletic players celebrate a goal against Bristol Spartak
