What is an Associate Member?

A technical or non-technical applicant who does not meet the qualifications for Member grade, but who would benefit through membership and participation in the IEEE

Those who are progressing, through continuing education and work experience, towards the qualifications for Member grade



What Is A Full Member?Either:

(a) An individual who shall have received a three-to-five year university-level or higher degree (i) from an accredited institution or program and (ii) in an IEEE-designated field

(b) An individual who shall have received a three-to-five year university-level or higher degree from an accredited institution or program and who has at least three years of professional work experience engaged in teaching, creating, developing, practicing or managing in IEEE-designated fields

(c) An individual who, through at least six years of professional work experience, has demonstrated competence in teaching, creating, developing, practicing or managing within IEEE-designated fields



Upgrade To Member

A candidate must be regularly employed in IEEE-designated fields with a combination of education and work experience for at least six years and has demonstrated competence in work of a professional characterThe designated fields are: Engineering, Computer sciences and information technology, Physical sciences, Biological and medical sciences, Mathematics, Technical communications, education, management, law and policyEducational experience is credited as follows: three years for a baccalaureate degree in an IEEE-designated field; four years if you hold a baccalaureate and masters degree; and five years if you hold a doctorate



Upgrade To Member

Case 1. An applicant/nominee has no degree and has worked for many years in the electric industry as a technician. Six years ago, he/she accepted an engineering level position and has continued with it since that time. Result: ApprovedCase 2. An applicant/nominee has one or more degrees that are not in an IEEE-designated field but has worked for the past six years of professional character in an IEEE-designated field. Result: ApprovedCase 3. An applicant/nominee is an executive who, for at least six years, has had under his/her direction important technical, engineering, or research work in IEEE-designated fields. Result: Approved



Associate Members

Are entitled to attend meetings

Can vote only on matters presented to groups of members (such as Societies and Sections)

Can be appointed to committees with the right to vote when specifically approved by the Board of Directors

Update: Upgraded Methodology for Calculating Retention …

“Unique-Matching” of Membership Records

Unique-matching compares unique member records at the beginning and conclusion of the membership year, 16 August through 15 August.

Impact:

The unique-matching methodology will not materially impact long-term trending for total membership retention rates.

One-year, downward correction in the higher-grade retention rate (in total, by about 1.0%); correction accounts for the August student elevations now being included in the higher-grade renewal opportunity for the subsequent membership year.

One-year, upward correction in the total student retention rate.

Corrections will fluctuate among IEEE’s Regions; influenced by the proportion of student members (and their August ‘09 elevations) to the total membership of each Region.

The Terminator Action

Members who didn’t renew for 2009 till the end of 2008 continued to have all the member benefits during January and February 2009. Such members are named “Pre-Arrears”At the end of February, after the Terminator Action, all the Pre-Arrears who didn’t renew are sorted out, their member benefits, rights and privilages are deactivated (they don’t receive the journals anymore) and they are named “Arrears”Starting from the beginning of March all members renewing for 2009 are transfered from the list of Arrears to the list of Active Members and their member benefits, rights and privilages are activated again instantaneously (they receive again the journals)

To try to entice and encourage as many as possible higher-grade members from R8 to renew their membership

To gather information regarding the issues facing members during the renewal process

To motivate section chairs and section MD officers to act



Strategy

Use SAMIEE to get an updated list of ALL pre-arrears in R8 with all their details

Compose and send a very friendly, PERSONAL email inviting the member to renew

Send a report and details of the activity to section chairs and MD officers

Help resolve the issues that members raise as a result of the above communications. (This was a byproduct of the strategy)

Some StatisticsThe amount of emails sent was exactly 15,131. This included all membership in R8 except students, graduate students and affiliates To date we have received 4,030 replies, and we are still receiving them daily. About these replies:

786 were undeliverable messages. (mostly due to wrong or no longer available email addresses). We believe this is quite a large number which deserves some attention to see how we can mend it

2,791 messages which were indications that the email sent was read by the recipient (this is an indication by the email system that the recipient actually opened the email, some email systems do not send such replies, so it does not mean the others did not open the email)

435 queries with problems, thank you notes, I renewed now etc messages

We replied directly to around 400 emails



ResultsMany members renewed after receiving our letter

We could validate the letter’s impact by daily queries in SAMIEEE

The number of Pre-Arrears (un-renewed members) was decreasing faster than usually. We had a significant advance in higher grade retention in February

We learned a lot, we informed and helped members, etc.



Reply Strategy

This was formulated after receiving initial replies and based on the trends

The amount of replies asking for help and assistance was very large

We had to answer otherwise we lose credibility

Sample ready-made replies were formulated to help deal with this problem

Many problems were directly forwarded to IEEE HQ for sorting

This really took quite a bit of time/effort
