PERFORMANCE NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS
- This is a one-movement work.
- The Choir should be divided in three (Choir 1, 2 & 3). Ideally, Choir 3 should have half members as each of Choirs 1 & 2.
- The two types of material (sung and spoken) for each of the three different parts (Choir 1, 2 & 3) should be performed together.
- Choirs 1 & 2 perform the spoken part, Choir 3 performs the sung part.
- Choir 1 starts the piece. They perform spoken text continuosly, without any interruption, from the beginning to the end.
- Choir 3 follows Choir 1. They sing three different and isolated segments of music which alternate with fermatas of different duration. Aproximate durations of these fermatas are marked in the score.
- Choir 2 is the last to enter. It performs exactly the same spoken material as Choir 1 but sometimes, in a very specific order and place.
- The piece ends in a short silence, when absolutely everyone has finished to perform his/her part.
Choir 1
- Each singer starts perfoming at absolutely any line and continues performing the sequence uninterruptedly over and over again except for the line contained in page four.
- The line in page four should be performed in the last repetition only.
Choir 2
- Enclosed numbers in a shape (hexagone or circle) indicate the place and the material that Sopranos 2 should perform. For instance, in the first beat of the third measure they should perform the material marked with number 1 in their score.
- Sometimes they are asked to perform a specific line only and stop or to start in a specific line and continue:
Indicates to perform a certain line only and stop (line number one in this example).
Indicates to perform a certain line (number seven in this example) and continue with the sequence of lines (in the ......... order in which they appear in the score), starting from the first line of page two to the last line of ..................... page three.
In both cases, the arrow indicates the place where the spoken material should start to be performed. However precision is not neccesary nor desired.
Choir 3
- Simply sing their three different segments of music waiting the amount of time between them specified in the score.
Spoken Material
- It is formed by a sequence of lines result of the phonems of the segmented text.
- This sequence, pages two and three, should be perform over and over again unless otherwise indicated (like in Sopranos 2 for instance).
- Tempo, duration of each of the gestures and lines as well as duration of the breaths are chosen by each of the performers. Therefore, none of them will ever be sincronized even when starting in the same line.
- The main goal is to create a rich and always changing texture in which each of the performers is independent from each other (acting like a soloist).
- Measure 34 indicates the start of the ending of the piece and therefore, the last repetition of the sequence. When this moment arrives, each of the singers should continue performig their sequences for the last time until reaching the last line of page three and adding the next line in page four this time.
Sung Material
- Should be performed by a small group of singers, as soft as possible and very intimate. Should be heard far away, like a reminiscence... always in the background.
Setting
- Please use any of the following:
