UPCOMING EVENTS A MESSAGE from Ms. Potter-Davis Happy May! I can hardly believe that we are in the final stretch of the 2015-16 school year. I am continuously amazed by the growth and progress of our students, and I look forward to finishing the year on a high note! We have many fun events to look forward to, including several field trips, Field Day on May 25th, 5th grade Completion Ceremony and Picnic, the Carnival on Friday, June 5, and much more. As the days get longer, please remember to help your child get a good night’s sleep. We have noticed an increase in children arriving late, many looking very tired! Also, thanks for continuing to encourage your child to complete their homework each night and to read every night. We are excited to end the year with our annual Read-A-Thon, which goes from May 9 to May 20. I will be challenging each student to read 30 minutes each day for those 10 days. As of yet, I have not decided what the celebration will be if we meet our goal, but I will be creating a suggestion box in our office and I look forward to hear- ing the students’ ideas! (Well, sort of...!). In the past I have dyed my hair blue, kissed a frog and a pig. This is always a fun event at Huegel. As we look forward to next year, we are in the early stages of class placement. When we create class lists, we consider each child’s academic and interper- sonal strengths, and ensure that each child has academic peers. Next year we will have 26 classrooms, including 4K, and I expect to hire one additional classroom teacher, as well as a special education teacher. Mark your cal- endars for August Registration day, which will be on Thursday, August 18. We haven’t yet set the date for our Back To School Picnic, but we will include that date in the 4th quarter report card envelopes. Here’s hoping the warm weather is here to stay! Happy May!

HUEGEL READINGChildren in grades K-5 have a literacy block with a recommended 120-minutes of daily instruction. During this time, chil-dren are reading, writing, speaking, listen-ing, and working with language within a workshop model, in which a skill or con-cept is introduced and practiced until children can do it independently.

During reading instruction, children learn what it means to be a reader - how read-ers apply their early reading skills and strategies to understand what they are reading. Children engage in shared read-ing experiences of grade-level texts where both the teacher and the children are reading the text together. Teachers also work with small groups of children with similar reading instructional needs. These groups are flexible and change as a result of how the children are doing. During independent reading, children self-select and practice reading texts on their own or with a partner in order to practice apply-ing both known and developing skills and concepts. Children have the opportunity to read for pleasure, be independent problem solvers, and improve reading fluency. We use Mondo Bookshop as our core resource.

Families are a key partners to helping students meet grade level expectations.

What is the absolute best way to help your student? Read! A few things to keep in mind when reading with your child.

Reading takes practice. Daily practice is an important part of improving any-thing, especially reading. Make time every day in your routine for reading with your child.

Reading to your child is still important. Listening to an adult read increases flu-ency, comprehension skills, vocabulary, background knowledge, sense of story, awareness of genre and text structure.

Talking about books also improves read-ing. Having conversations about books increases comprehension and engage-ment with reading. Ask your child to think about, wonder and question what they read and see in books. Did they enjoy the book? What was their favor-ite part? What was the author trying to teach them?

Readers are more engaged with books they choose. Reading research is very clear that children read more, un-derstand more and are more likely to continue reading when they have the opportunity to choose what they read. Help your child find books from school, the library and even our Huegel Library Portal that are interesting to your child. Remember that through our Huegel Library Portal your child can check out e-books and audiobooks from the Madi-son Public Library!

Working together, Huegel teachers and families can provide a clear way for stu-dents to become college, career and community ready! The MMSD website con-tains many family resources for the literacy standards and additional ways to work with your children at home. Check it out at: https://literacy.madison.k12.wi.us/

HUEGEL TECHNOLOGYThere is so much exciting learning that is happening through technology at Huegel! Lately, students of all grades have been using technology to share what they have learned with others. From 1st graders using Explain Everything for their How To Books, to 5th graders creating QR codes on their state projects to link to a video of them teaching others about their states.

Our 2nd through 5th graders also had the opportunity to go on a Google Ex-pedition!. A representative from Google brought a set of Google glasses (which were a lot like the Viewmasters of the past), and students were able to go on a 3-D field trip to many amazing places. Very cool!

    Book ExchangeDear Huegel families,

Our amazing 5th grade Huegel Heroes club is dedicated to improving our school community. Our first project for the semester was to create a book exchange, where students and families can donate gently used childrens books and also take home books! We did a book drive, which has filled one shelf already. We are looking for more books to add to the collection! Books can be donated by dropping them off in the main office for Ms. Wacker, or by simply placing them on the shelf! Take a look when you pass by to see if there is a book youd like to take home with you! The book is right outside the main office!

    Thanks much.

Are you moving, or have you moved this year?

If you have moved or plan on moving outside of your schools attendance area between September 1, 2015, and August 31, 2016, you may need to fill out an internal transfer application in order for your child to continue to attend the same school or feeder school for the upcoming school year. To find your new attendance area, use the Find Your School tool online or contact your childs school.

The Internal Transfer window opens May 2 and closes at 4pm on May 20. We encourage you to apply during this first round to receive preference even if you are not planning to move until the summer. Everyone that applies during the first round will find out if they were approved or wait listed by July 1. All other applications will be finalized by August 25.
