CARTA DE ABBY
¡Feliz Primavera!
The Forward Exam is linked to Wisconsin’s state standards and tests English Lan-guage Arts (ELA) and Mathematics in Grades 3 – 8. In addition, Grades 4 and 8 will also have a section of the test on Science and Social Studies. This is an untimed computer-based test that will include a listening section in the ELA portion of the test. The window in MMSD for this test will be April 25 through May 20, 2016. More information can be found at: mmsd.org/forwardtest. As always, you can support your child by helping them get a good night’s rest and encouraging them to do their best.
Finally, enjoy this month’s newsletter, which is focused on music. As a former choir mem-ber myself I am very aware of the power of the arts to inspire and engage students. You will hear from our music teachers and hear all about the music opportunities offered at Huegel. Enjoy!
Atentamente,Sra. Potter-Davis

2 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS
HUEGEL LEGO LEAGUEWHAT IS LEGO LEAGUE?FIRST Lego League (FLL) is a fun way to explore science and computer program-ming while working together with a team. The team designs, builds, and programs a robot using the Lego Mindstorms system to compete on a table-top playing field. In addition to robotics, teams must research and come up with a creative solution to a real-world problem associated with the theme of that year’s competition--next year’s theme will be “Animal Allies”. They are also evaluated on teamwork skills and community service and outreach.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LEGO LEAGUE?It is a fun way try out engineering, pro-gramming, and scientific research! Builds confidence in STEM fieldsReal world problem-solving experienceBuilds teamwork and community service skills
WHO CAN JOIN LEGO LEAGUE?Next year’s 4th and 5th graders, as well as Huegel alumni 6th graders, can join a regular Lego League team Next year’s 2nd and 3rd graders can do Jr. Lego League, which does simpler programming and doesn’t have to do a research project
WHEN WILL LEGO LEAGUE HAPPEN?The competition season starts in late Au-gust, with the first round of tournaments in early November. Team(s) would have weekly meetings held at Huegel, either af-ter school or in the evenings. There would also be at least one weekend competition in the Madison area.
WHAT DOES LEGO LEAGUE COST?A goal for Huegel’s Lego League program is to cover the full cost of our team(s) through fundraising, sponsors, and grants. Families of participants would be encouraged to donate to the team and to help out with fundraising, but there would be no minimum donation to join the team.
We need lots of parent participation to launch Lego League at Huegel! Each team of 5-10 kids needs at least two parent coaches per team who can regularly attend meetings. Coaches don’t need prior experi-ence in robotics, but they do need to submit information for a background check. Other parents would need to help with fundraising and to help kids do activities for the team at home.
If you think your child may be interested in Lego League, please fill out this survey (https://docs.google.com/a/uwalumni.com/forms/d/1UcWW3-6l0voAgNgEr6n3ReuAu-K2aV0k-AaHaGA8M71U/viewform?edit_requested=true). You don’t have to commit to a team yet. If you have other questions or comments, please contact Sherri Swartz at [email protected] or 273-1743, or Lesli Vazquez at [email protected]. Also, plan to attend the April technol-ogy meeting for parents where we will have a presentation about Lego League and you can meet other families who are interested. Since the competition season starts just be-fore the school year starts, we need to have teams in place before the end of this school year.

7 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS
BY Rhonda Chalone, Huegel Music Teacher
It’s keyboard and computer time in the music room! Each spring, for 8-10 weeks, students have “mini” piano lessons and learn simple songs on keyboards. In addition, they use a computer music program called Music Ace which reviews and has them practice notes on the staff, on the piano, and rhythms.
At the end of the year, students will bring home a MUSIC ACE sheet which will list the lessons they worked on during class. I keep a running record from year to year, so the pen or pencil marks are THIS YEAR’S progress.
Students work at their own level and pace, but are expected to achieve a certain level of competency. (usually about 5 songs on keyboards and 3-5 lessons on the computer are average).
Kindergarten students get an introduction to the piano keyboard and work more as a group for a while. The last few weeks, they have a chance to work more independently.
If your child has access to a piano or keyboard at home, please encourage them to show you what they know and/or practice at home.
If you have a smart phone or tablet, you can get a free piano app.
