A MESSAGEfrom Ms. Potter-Davis

Dear Huegel Families,

What a great start to the 2015-16 school year. As we ease into daily schedules and routines I am proud of all the work we have done to teach our Huegel expectations, which are to be safe, respectful, and responsible. When you walk through our quiet hallways you can just feel the positive energy and the buzz of busy learning taking place!

The month of September was full of celebrations and community building. I know that many of you were able to join us on our Community Walk, which was a fun way to get out in the Huegel neighborhood and be a positive presence in our community. From there we returned to Huegel for our Floating to Stardom Celebration, where classes celebrated the college, community and career goals each student set for him or herself. Students will be revisiting their goals each quarter, so stay tuned for updates and progress reports.

We also met in our Huegel Huddles twice in September. Huddles are cross grade level groups of 12-15 students and one or two Huegel staff members, or Huddle coaches. Students stay in the same Huddle throughout their time at Huegel.

2 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS

Best,

Abby Potter-Davis, Huegel [email protected]

Our hope is that Huddles promote positive school-wide community and connections across our building. In September the Huddles came together to welcome their new members, and also to complete their We Are All Connected posters, which you will see hanging up all around our school. We have many fun events planned for our Huddles, including Game Day, a Read In, Bingo and a school-wide bowling trip.

Finally, I wanted to share about our School Improvement Plan. Each year our School Based Leadership Team (SBLT) identifies several areas of focus. Our professional collaboration and learning target these areas. This year, we are focused on:

• CCSS Reading Anchor Standard 10 (Reading complex texts)• CCSS Writing Standard #5 (planning, drafting, revising, editing, publishing)• Gradual Release of Responsibility• Oral and Academic Language• Data analysis and collaborative planning (SBLT and Grade level teams)• Student self-regulation and decision-making• Student engagement opportunities (Huddles, Clubs)• Two-Way Communication with families around learning

Of particular importance for families is our focus on two-way communication with families around learning; we are always looking for ways to improve our communication! Please feel free to reach out to me, your child’s teacher, or any Huegel staff member with ideas about how to do this. I will also look forward to seeing families at Open House on Tuesday, October 6, as well as our Parent Meeting on Tuesday, October 13.

TECH PLAN

We are off to a great start

with our new technology. All

teachers are excited to use

the 70 inch monitors for their

morning message, to feature

student work, and so much more.

Teachers are also slowly rolling

out the student devices, but

being very careful to teach the

expectations and routines for

using the devices. We are always

looking for ways to share the fun

and exciting things that teachers

and students are doing with

technology, so stay tuned!
