This is an exciting time of year because we really see students make large leaps in their learning. You will soon receive your child’s second quarter report card, which outlines the progress he or she has made so far this year. Our dedicated staff is always working hard to make sure your child continues to learn and grow to their full potential. You will have a chance to have a face-to-face conference with your child’s teacher in March, but if you ever have a question or concern please do not hesitate to reach out. Now that there is finally snow we have had lots of fun playing outdoors! Students have been sledding down the hills, and building snow forts and snow people. Thank you for continuing to make sure your child has the proper gear with which to enjoy winter. While we do stay indoors when the temperatures and wind chill dip below 10 below, we do make it a priority to send students outside for physical activity and fresh air. We believe that students need plenty of opportunities to move and play, and we acknowledge the research that links high levels of physical activity to better academic performance and behavior. On the following pages you’ll hear from our physical education (PE) teachers, Drew Kornish and Lisa Gleboff, and learn more ways for your family to be active this winter. I look forward to seeing families at our upcoming PTO meeting on February 9, as well as Read Your Heart Out Day on February 4 and our Literacy/Math/Pizza Night, which takes place on February 23. 4 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS

BY LISA GLEBOFF + DREW KORNISH

Physical activity can be a tough to achieve in the bitter months of the Wisconsin winter. However, not all physical activity needs to be done outdoors or in tons of space. Fitness challenges are a great way to get everyone involved in turning off the screen and getting the heart pumping. A few challenges that require no real space needs are, balance challenges such as “who can stand on one leg the longest?” Jumping challenges, “who can jump the most times in 30 seconds?” WIth a simple stopwatch, students are able to let their imagination take over. Getting the whole family involved is a great way to keep these games lively and engaging.

Wisconsin also offers some of the best winter scenery one could ask for. Take advantage of all that Wisconsin has to offer by checking this link, http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/findapark.html Here you will be able to find a state park based on location or even activity you are interested in.

Whether it is in the middle of the living room, or the middle of the forest, remember to get up and get moving this winter.
