We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return – a raffle ticket, a dinner, a chance to play golf or our name in print. Yet, as Christian stew-ards, we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven. Nos cuesta mucho el concepto de dar sin esperar algo a cambio. Incluso cuando damos por caridad, a menudo queremos algo a cambio: un boleto para la rifa, una cena, la oportunidad de jugar al golf o nuestro nombre impreso. Sin embargo, como adminis-tradores cristianos, debemos recordar que la verdadera recom-pensa por lo que damos nos espera en el cielo.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The readings today center on mindfulness, awareness of where we stand in God’s plan. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus’ pres-ence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mystery. September’s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of summer. The Christian life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives. Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The former liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the foot of the altar’s three steps, chanting Introibo ad altare Dei, or “I will go to the altar of God,” followed by the altar servers’ re-sponse, “The God who gives joy to my youth.” Many parish-ioners can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once re-served for encounter with the holy, and the intimacy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink. —James Field, Copyright © J. Men’s Prayer Service: Come join the men of our parish on Thursday, Sep. 5, at 7 pm in the St. James Hall for an evening of reflection, prayer and food! Keep in mind the date changed this month.

Project Cool is a program initiated by Catholic Charities in coordination with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to help relieve the concern of heat exhaustion within the senior popula-tion. Project Cool has been providing senior citizens and dis-abled persons with fans at no cost to help alleviate the summer heat. If you or anyone knows of a senior or disabled person that is in need of a fan, please contact Mrs. Hope Guevara at 830-672-2945 or come by church office with valid photo ID.

Church Membership- it is time to update our church database with your family record. Please update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in your family. E-mail Mrs. Hope at catholic@stx.rr.com about any changes to your family record or pick up a parish registration form in the entrance of church and return to church office.

HUMILITY Humility is a virtue we don’t see much in our times. It seems that bragging, swaggering, and arrogance dominate our fashion for everything and our Internet conversations. Who hasn’t been irritated by the “trolls” who try (usually with bad grammar and poor spelling) to start an online fight with those whose opinions do not align with theirs? Our stores, catalogs, and online shopping sites are full of useless items geared in use and price to the very rich, as ordinary, useful things seem to fade off the sales scene. As the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the middle class is fading away. What is the antidote to this? Humility is a good place to start. Devotion to God is worth more than riches. “The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. LA HUMILDAD La humildad es una virtud que no vemos mucho en estos días. Parece que la vanidad, la prepotencia y la arrogancia dominan nuestras costumbres de todo y en nuestras conversaciones en Internet. ¿Quién no se ha molestado por los trolls de quienes intentan (por lo general con una mala gramática y falta de ortografía) empezar una pelea con aquellas personas que no coinciden con sus opi-niones? Nuestras tiendas, catálogos y tiendas virtuales en línea están llenas de cosas inútiles destinados al uso y por el precio a los ricos, en tanto las cosas ordinarias parecen desaparecer de esos lugares de venta. A medida que los ricos se hacen más ricos, los po-bres se van haciendo más pobres y la clase media va desapareciendo. ¿Cuál es el antídoto para esto? La humildad es un buen lugar para empezar.
