Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. — Mark 16:16

MISSION STATEMENT Today we celebrate Christ’s ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mission in the world. First we hear Luke’s description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark’s account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus’ name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mis-sion of the church of Jesus Christ—a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our parishes and corpo-rations, this mission statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ’s messianic mission on earth. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Ascension of the Lord Page Three

Blessings on our 60+ candidates who receive the Sacrament of Confirmation today! And a great welcome to Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, who will administer the sacrament at the 5:15 mass at St. James this afternoon. May this prayer, written by St. Teresa of Avila, be our prayer of blessing for all our can-didates:

Christ has no body but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good; yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world.

Newly confirmed - may the Holy Spirit, who ignited the apos-tles with his fire and sent them forth to proclaim the good news, bless you today with that same courage and joy. Our world needs you and the gifts you have to offer! May you take to heart your mission to be Christ to our world, using the great gifts bestowed on you through the Holy Spirit at this evening’s Mass!

Special Masses for Graduates: Next Sunday, May 20, 9:30 and 11:30. We welcome all who graduate from the high schools and colleges of our area to receive the blessing of our community that day, and allow us to celebrate with you. We reach out especially to all of our college graduates. I personally know of three from our community - Cassidy LaFleur, Chris-tina Gutierrez and Gabriela Mendoza; perhaps there are many others! Allow us to celebrate with you. Wear your cap and gown - or just come as you are! -- Fr. Paul
