Stage 3 M.A.R.S. Kit Project This semester in Stage 3 students have been working towards producing energy kits, aptly named M.A.R.S Kits, which stands for Modern, Affordable, Reusable, Sustainable Kits. Our aim was to work towards supporting Goal 4 and 7 of our UN Global Goals, by creating these kits for developing communities. Through the semester, Stage 3 have learnt about Energy and Forces in science, which afforded them the knowledge to create sustainable lamps (with solar panels), that would be provided to these communities. Students were also learning about how Australia was developed and significant individuals that were a part of Australian history. During English lessons, students learnt about creating persuasive and informative texts, which allowed them to create persuasive letters to urge the community and organisations to help support us in our cause, before creating information texts and infographics that were included in our M.A.R.S kits to support in 'handing-up' knowledge and instruction to the developing communities. A culmination of the work Stage 3 students have put into their project can be seen at the link below. We hope to send these kits to developing communities in coming weeks. https://s3hwps.weebly.com/2021-mars-kit.html

HWPS Colour/ Slime Spectacular Fundraiser URGENT COMPLETE DURING THE HOLIDAYS Our super fun, annual Colour Run (this year including a Slime Spectacular Option) will be taking place on Tuesday July 20th 2021. We hope that this fundraiser will complete our fundraising activities to ensure that everyone in Stage 3 can access the special events that mark this final stage of primary school. This is a reminder to students and families to continue fundraising and gathering sponsors across the holidays to add to your tally for this event. We still have five weeks to go and need lots more donations to reach our goal. Can you help us? 1. NAIDOC Week 2021 With the theme, Heal Country! NAIDOC 2021 invites us to embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage and equally respect the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders as they do the cultures and values of all Australians. It calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.

This week, the Department of Education celebrated national NAIDOC Week, which falls during the first week of the school holidays. More than 20 schools in Sydney, central NSW and mid-north coast of NSW are involved in the event, which has been shown online from 9am, each day. Our own NAIDOC Week celebrations will be held in Week 1 Term 3, however this week’s online events have provided an excellent opportunity to connect students to the 2021 theme and build awareness of the importance of this event. We look forward to our HWPS NAIDOC celebrations on Tuesday 13th July.

NSW Premier's Spelling Bee The Premier’s Spelling Bee was introduced in 2004 as a fun and educational way for NSW public primary school students to engage in spelling. The program includes activities to encourage all students to improve their vocabulary and spelling and to promote literacy skills in combination with the English K-6 Syllabus. We congratulate our Junior and Senior Spelling Bee finalists, Juliet in Stage 2 and Jenny in Stage 3. They will be preparing for the regional finals commencing on the 29th August, and held online using video technology. The state finals will be held at the ABC studios on Friday 29 October 2021.

The Wonder Recycling Program, closing soon The Student Representative Council members are proud to announce that Homebush West school community has collected just over 300 bread bags. These will not only be recycled to help our environment but also repurposed into exciting new things like play school equipment. Thank you to all those who have contributed to this wonderful program already. We look forward to this continued enthusiasm as the collection period has been extended until the end of Week 1 Term 3. Please continue collecting your bread bags and tags over the holidays to support this cause. Happy recycling! Miss Santoro and the SRC Stage 1 History Project This term, Stage One students have been learning about significant people, events, places and sites in and around their local community over time. Students have examined the ways in which these events, places and people have impacted people's lives. In connection with their learning, students worked in small groups to design and build a diorama. These dioramas were showcased this week in an exhibition. It was a chance for students to explain their thinking, give and receive peer feedback and celebrate the hard work and stunning craftsmanship that every student has dedicated to this project. Miss Horsfall

Peer Support - Student Report Last week’s focus was 'Our Rights'. We did a range of activities related to our rights. One of the activities we completed was called 'What would you do in this situation'. An example of one of the questions was 'What if your mum asked you to turn off the TV? Students in our Peer Support groups were encouraged to think about the most respectful way to respond. We are really looking forward to our final peer support session next week. Nilukshan and Ashley

PSSA Reports Junior Netball – Ms Yee Senior Netball – Ms Tuazon Junior Boys Soccer– Mr Penman Senior Boys Soccer– Mr Vagne Junior Girls Soccer - Mr Johnston Senior Girls Soccer - Ms Tsiamis Junior Netball Last Friday was a great day. We played against Strathfield South PS. Team A and B both played impeccably. Team A won with a score of 5-3 but there were some people who played very nicely on the other team. Team B got 4 while our opponents got 0. They tried their very best. Congratulations to both teams!! Written by Jahnavi Senior Netball To open the match, the B team defeated Strathfield South PS with a score of 14 - 1. Throughout the game the team had great sportsmanship and teamwork. All members of the team defended aggressively and actively communicated for the ball. Our amazing shooters played different roles with Eric intercepting strongly and supporting Arisha to shoot, who was equally as impressive. Akshika was player of the match for her intercepting and defence all across the court. Congratulations to all players for taking on feedback and improving and getting another win! Last Friday, the A team were amazing and worked really hard as a team, defeating Strathfield South PS 14 - 2. The whole team worked hard and improved their passes, teamwork and footwork, having focused on it at training. The player of the match was Laura for her amazing shooting, intercepts and feeds into the circle. Everyone worked really hard to fight for possession and keep hold of every ball. An impressive display by all players, well done! Written by: Jogaile and Renisha

Junior and Senior Boys Soccer Last Friday both teams had a bye and were taken to Airey Park. The junior team decided they wanted to play the senior team with the support of Coach Vagne and Coach Penman playing for the junior boys. In the game Kirtan and Aryan did well in defending and attacking and were all over the field. Soyan, Allen, Likhil, Zied moved the ball up and across the field and this allowed the ball to be moved around and in the end passed it to Mr Penman to tap the ball in and score a goal. We had Naithik, Edison, Riddan and Vivaan on goals and as a back line defence who helped save lots of goals. Vivan, Abinav and Jermaine were huge supporters on the field being a part of most plays when attacking and defending in the middle of the field. Written by the Junior Boys

Mr Penman

Junior Girls Soccer On Friday we played against Victoria Avenue PS. Jia and Shuya shared the role of the goalkeeper and Zainab and Munazza were our strikers. Homebush West did a great job but sadly we lost. Victoria Avenue scored 3 goals and Homebush West scored nil. Talia, Munazza and Zainab were great in attacking and tried their best attempting to score a goal. Yazhini, Sweety and Lilya did a great job at defending and mid-fielding. The game was really fun but difficult. Everyone played very well and we were even commended by the opposing teams coach for our sportsmanship. Congratulations to Victoria Avenue for winning.

Written by Zainab and Munazza

Senior Girls Soccer Last Friday we played against Victoria Avenue PS. We had a great game, one of the best games we have played all season but unfortunately, we lost. Our team was determined to get a goal this week. We came onto the field with great ambition and even got close to the goal multiple times almost scoring, however, we could not get passed the goalies strong defence.

Abrar, Zalia, Eugene and Esther were strong in our attack. Grace, Elizabeth and Anushka controlled the midfield well and Jenny, Bianca and Joyce were strong in our defence. A big thank you to Rose, Amelia and Jiwoo from the junior team for playing amazingly well for us as we were short on team members.

Both schools showed great sportsmanship and the opposing team’s coach even commended us on our sportsmanship and teamwork. Even though it was a loss, this was the best game we have played so far and hopefully next week we can score a goal!

Thanks, Mrs Tsiamis, Joyce, Grace and Zalia

Support for Chris Prouty, Chaplain

As many of you are aware, our School Chaplain, Chris Prouty has had a serious health set back, with nine broken vertebrae in her back.

Chris is currently unable to undertake the valuable work she does as Community Support Officer/ Chaplain with the Homebush West Public School students and community. Many parents and community members have asked how they might show their support.

P&C is currently coordinating gifts and cards and volunteer support. Many parents have made dinners, offered to clean the house or yard, and reached out to Chris personally. In addition the P&C are taking donations, including gift vouchers, or direct deposits, to show our ongoing care and support, see the options below.

1. If you have a card, and or gift

voucher for Chris, please drop it in to the P&C mailbox at Homebush West Public School office door.

2. Or, send the card and or gift voucher to school with your child to the office, in an envelope marked “P&C Gift, Chris Prouty”.

3. If you’d like to support Chris in person, by providing meals, house cleaning, helping with shopping or in some other way please email P&C member Agne. [email protected]
