The Silent Heroes Memorial Center

commemorates those people who supported persecuted Jews during the Nazi dictatorship. The example set by these helpers—often referred to as “silent heroes”—shows that there was in fact leeway for maneuvering to help people at risk in Nazi Germany and in the German-occupied territories.

After the mass deportations to the ghettos and extermination camps had begun in the fall of 1941, about 10,000 to 12,000 German Jews attempted to escape the deadly threat by going into hiding.

It is estimated that tens of thousands of people within the German Reich alone helped these Jews. About 5,000 Jews survived there in hiding, more than 1,700 of them in Berlin.

The Silent Heroes Memorial Center was located from 2008 to 2017 at Rosenthaler Straße 39 in Berlin-Mitte. In February 2018 it reopened after moving to exhibition space connected to the German Resistance Memorial Center.

The permanent exhibition presents infor-mation about the persecution and plight of Jews facing imminent deportation, about how some of them decided to resist the threat to their lives by going underground, and about the actions and motivations of the men and women who helped them. Not only successful rescues are documented, but also failed attempts.

Most of the rescue stories on display took place in Germany. They are told from the dual perspective of the helpers and of those they helped.

There are plans to expand the permanent exhibition in the coming years, including also help for Jews in German-occupied territories. The necessary preparations are being carried out in collaboration with Israel’s Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem and European partner institutions.

The Silent Heroes Memorial Center in the German Resistance Memorial Center Foundation is continuing to collect reports, photographs, and documents, and to archive video and audio recordings of oral history accounts of events.
