A WINDOW OF THE PAST

The

quarter lies just a short hop from Friedrichstrasse, right beside the

Grimm-Zentrum.

The attic floors of the buildings which accommodated the royal

household staff in Geschwister–Scholl–Strasse 5 and Planckstrasse

20/20A, 22/24 are being converted into modern, top quality freehold

apartments.

In 1811, this area was developed with the royal depository, which

was an important part of the Royal Estates Commission until 1921, sto-

ring building materials, plastic reliefs and sculptures and furnishings.

From 1903 to 1905 the Royal Estates Commission constructed the

four-storey accommodation for the royal servants in the former Prinz-

Friedrich-Karl-Strasse, which changed its name in 1949 to Geschwi-

ster-Scholl-Strasse. The ground and first floors of the second trans-

verse building contain the building remains of the royal depository as

well as its most outstanding feature:

29 limestone slab reliefs which, according to recent research, be-

long to the Schlütersche Werkstatt. The reliefs, which are decorated

with war trophies, are currently being restored and, once completed,

will be reinstalled on the western wall of the coach house.

Residents of the building which accommodated the royal house-

hold staff in the former Prinz-Luis-Ferdinand-Strasse, today Planck-

strasse, built in 1915, will have an exclusive view of these reliefs, becau-

se it is not planned to allow access to the general public.

The properties in a Neo-Baroque style, both of which are regi-

stered protected monuments, belong to the Historism era, with putti,

vases and pillars on the façades, as well as crown reliefs above the

main entrances.

Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse 5 is a particularly unique historic mo-

nument in Berlin.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.“Adolf Pütz,

instructed with the conversion of the attic floors.

The elegant façade has been restored for preservation purposes:

boasting a coat of arms, crown and the initials “RW” (for “Rex Wil-

helm”, King Wilhelm), it is also riddled with bullet holes from the vio-

lent street fights which took place in Spring 1945 and is missing ele-

ments removed by the former GDR housing executive.

This is a façade which has witnessed several stages of 20th Cen-

tury history.

library, which opened on 12 October 2009.

AN INVITATION TO STROLL

THROUGH THE CITY

GOING FOR A STROLL.

The Museum Island is within five minutes’ walk along WEIDEN-

DAMM and KUPFERGRABEN. A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE

SITE since 1999, as a unique ensemble of the academic landscape, the

MUSEUM ISLAND represents 100 years of museum architecture.

In front of the Bode Museum, the Monbijoubrücke (bridge) stret-

ches over the River Spree and into Monbijoupark. At the foot of the

bridge, the Hexenkessel Hoftheater with Shakespeare and Co. has be-

come firmly established in the hearts of Berliners. And the accompa-

nying STRANDBAR (beach bar) and the MÄRCHENHÜTTE have be-

come firm fixtures…

In 1925, the then Kaiser-Friedrich Museum, today the Bode Museum, acquired this plaster bust of Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki.

The Bode Museum’s sculpture collection is now considered to be one of the world’s greatest collections of sculptures and reliefs.

Chodowiecki was the most popular German etcher, designer and illustrator of the 18th Century who, in addition to natural scientific works, also

illustrated works by Lessing, Goethe and Schiller.

Walking further along the riverbank in the direction of the boat

landing stage “Alte Börse”. A slight detour into the book shop “Walter

König” and over the Friedrichbrücke, suddenly you find yourself in the

heart of the cultural capital Berlin:

“ ... never have I been so touched. The essence is so rich, so interesting, so fabulous, ... so pic-

turesque that I want to experience happiness at least once, to be able to paint a series of great historic pictures from this era.”

Adolph von Menzel 1840 in a letter to a friend.

Menzel, the most significant German Realist of the 19th Century,

worked on illustrations of the history of Fredrick the Great, became a

“Fredrick Expert” and from 1849 painted a series of artworks of his life.

“Das Flötenkonzert Friedrichs des Grossen in Sanssouci” is the name

of the most famous of these paintings, which is currently on display

in the Alte Nationalgalerie.

The five museums on the MUSEUM ISLAND — the Alte National-

galerie, Neues Museum, Altes Museum, Pergamon Museum and Bode

Museum, the BERLINER DOM (cathedral), the Lustgarten and Schloss-

platz with the HUMBOLDT BOX — this is where architectural diversity

and art can be perfectly enjoyed. Students relax on the lawns in front of

the ALTE NATIONALGALERIE, tourists listen to street musicians,

children jump through the fountain in the LUSTGARTEN…

PRUSSIA’S GLORIA & ALMA MATER

Crossing over the SCHLOSSBRÜCKE you reach UNTER DEN

LINDEN, the boulevard with a history stretching as far back as the 16th

Century:

Initially a basic bridle path connecting the city palace to the Tier-

garten, in the aftermath of the Thirty Year War this major transport axis

was converted into a six-lane boulevard copied from a Dutch model, at

the direction of the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm.

The KRONPRINZENPALAIS, at the beginning of the boulevard,

was built in 1663 and the arsenal opposite was constructed in 1706.

From 1740, Fredrick the Great instructed the architect Georg

Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff to design the Forum Fridericianum, today

Bebelplatz, developed with the OPERA HOUSE, ROYAL LIBRARY

(known to Berliners as the “Kommode”), SANKT-HEDWIG CATHE-

DRAL and the PALAIS DES PRINZEN HEINRICH, today the main

HUMBOLDT UNIVERSITY building.

After his victory over Napoléon, Friedrich Wilhelm III instructed

his master builder Karl Friedrich Schinkel to construct the eastern sec-

tion of the boulevard as a monument to his triumph.

In the 19th Century, the western section of the boulevard was initially

a high-quality residential area but, in the years following the foundation

of the empire, rapidly developed into a popular commercial area with

shops and restaurants.

The former Alma Mater Berolinensis, today the HUMBOLDT UNI-

VERSITY OF BERLIN, founded on 16 August 1809 on the initiative of

the Prussian educational reformist and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt,

is the oldest of Berlin’s higher educational institutes.

In a ranking by the Times Higher Education Magazine, the Hum-

boldt University is rated as one of the top 100 universities in the world.

The pulse of Berlin beats at the JUNCTION OF FRIEDRICH-

STRASSE AND UNTER DEN LINDEN. One of the much sung “Ber-

liner Luft” anthems can almost be heard above the hustle and bustle

of the activity on the streets.

Berlin’s most elegant shopping centres and boutiques, Galeries

Lafayette and Quartier 206, can be found to the south, towards the

Leipziger Strasse junction.

Traffic and people densely packed, as if we were still in the 1920s

— that is the rhythm of Berlin Mitte, that is how Berlin “ticks”.

In 1899, Paul Lincke composed “Berliner Luft” a synonym for Berlin’s liberal attitude towards life.

The piece from the operetta “Frau Luna” was originally performed on 1 May in the former Apollo Theatre, Friedrichstrasse 218 and

is considered to be the unofficial anthem of the city.

“Berliner Luft” is a traditional closing piece at the annual closing concert of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra on the Waldbühne.

BACK TO THE

KÖNIGSDÄCHER QUARTER

UNDERNEATH THE S-BAHN BRIDGE.

After the construction of the railway to and from Berlin and of the

railway station in 1882, Friedrichstrasse became a transport hub and

from then on, played an increasingly important role.

Today, the commuter railway (S-Bahn), founded in 1930 by the

merger of the suburban railways with Berlin’s city and Ringbahn circle

lines, records passenger numbers above the 100 million mark. On

workdays, up to 1.2 million passengers travel an average distance of

9.8 km.

Further to the north you pass the listed Admiralspalast building

which backs onto Planckstrasse, with the modern Ernst & Young office

tower on the Spreedreieck opposite.

To the rear, the “Tränenpalast”, the former departure hall of the

border crossing point in Friedrichstrasse railway station from East

Berlin to West which is also a protected monument, will be home to

the permanent exhibition “GrenzErfahrungen. Alltag der deutschen

Teilung” (how people lived during the time of the division of the city)

from mid September 2011.

Weidendamm, a road in the KÖNIGSDÄCHER Quarter, takes its

name from the trees which were removed during construction works

in the 19th Century.

WEIDENDAMMER BRÜCKE was originally a timber railway

bridge which ran from Querstrasse, today Friedrichstrasse, over the

Spree to the north. During the development of this area, the bridge was

designed as an efficient transport link and was constructed between

1824 and 1826 as one of the first cast iron bridges in Central Europe.

In the industrial Berlin of the Imperial Era the load-bearing capa-

city of the bridge no longer satisfied the increased needs. As a result,

the Berliner Architektenverein (architects’ association) launched a

competition for the new Weidendammer Brücke in 1892. The Associ-

ation approved plans by Otto Stahn, which also satisfied the prescribed

decorative requirements. Construction works lasted nine years until

19 December 1923.

Thankfully, the Weidendammer Brücke survived the final battles

of the Second World War and has been registered as a protected mo-

nument since 1970.

Those crossing the Spree from Dorotheenstadt over the Wei-dendammer Brücke arrive in Spandauer Vorstadt. But this is where another part of Berlin’s history begins …

There are many stories about the development of Berlin: begin-
