While Canadian hockey was winning gold in Sochi, Canada was also made proud in the U.S. When O Canada played after Saturday’s $50,000 Purina Animal Nutrition CSI-W2* Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, it was playing for more than just the winner, Elizabeth Gingras of Alberta. Gingras and the up-and-coming Bretton Chad, also of Alberta, went one-two for Canada in a three- horse jump-off and celebrated together for their home nation. “We have been riding together in Alberta for many years,” said Gingras of her history with Chad. “Obviously you always want to win, but it was awesome to see two Canadians at the top. If the roles had been reversed, I would have been a very proud second.” While humble about the results, Gingras couldn’t control her excited reaction to how her 11-year-old Hanoverian mare performed. One of only three to jump clear over Manuel Esparza’s original track, Gingras topped a complete field of 21 for her first-ever win in a World Cup qualifying class. Esparza of Mexico City, Mexico set a technical track within the FEI-standard confines of the Strongid ® C 2X™ Grand Prix Stadium. The twelve obstacles offered horse and rider 15 jumping efforts, with a long and scopey line across the middle of the ring that included a vertical with a Liverpool, seven strides to the triple combination and ended with a tall plank vertical. “The water to the triple was very tricky to jump clear,” said Gingras. “The first vertical was a very careful fence and my horse has a large stride, so I was worried about fitting in the seven properly. Then, the plank was tall and pointed right at the out-gate.” Gingras jumped the line unscathed, but others were not so lucky – half the field picked up faults in the triple combination line and it was the only element that crushed clear rounds for six pairs. “Her scope is unreal,” said Gingras of the mare that Emile Hendrix found for her over a year ago. “I got her as a nine-year-old, so we have really grown together and become a team. I couldn’t have asked for anything more than what she gave me today.” (Continued on page 4) HUNTINGTON BEACH . DEL MAR FLINTRIDGE . Becoming a Clarke By Lindsay Yandon

An intimate event at the Chateau le Dome at Saddle Rock Ranch in Malibu, California brought two equestrian families together forever with the wedding of Ashlee Bond and Sage Clarke on October 13, 2013.

Bond, a household name in international show jumping, and Clarke, a rodeo bulldogger, cousin to show jumper Lane Clarke and farrier by trade, horses rule this couple’s world. The age-old advice to keep business and personal separate was, however, lost on this pair. “We both get it,” said Bond. “We understand how time consuming this business, but we both love it and it works out better that way. I love that he is able to work at the shows with me and he loves to able to watch me compete.”

Nayel NassarWhen he isn’t riding, Nayel Nassar is rooting for the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors on the basketball court. However, after qualifying for the FEI World Cup Finals, winning the North American West Coast League last year and capturing the 2013 Zoetis Million, it’s not often that one see’s Nassar out of the irons.

“The past year has been so exciting, so unplanned and so rewarding,” said Nassar looking back on 2013 – a dream that the Egyptian rider hopes he never wakes up from.

Born in Chicago and raised in Kuwait, Nassar has trotted the globe with a string of impressive horses in tow. In 2009, however, Nassar embarked on the biggest balancing act of his career – he started pursuing a degree in Economics from Stanford University while maintaining a robust riding schedule.

“It’s been a really tough few years, but with an amazing team behind me I am able to focus on school when I am at school and focus on the horses with I am with the horses,” he said. Nassar graduated from Stanford before coming to Thermal for the winter.

So, what makes Nassar’s story even richer? The rider is only 23 years old and has come a long way from his first time on a horse’s back as a five-year-old.

Here’s a closer look at Nayel Nassar: HNW: Who on your team do you attribute your success to?NN: My Family. My parents are my sponsors and supporters and my brother is an important piece of the puzzle. Without them, none of this would be possible.

My Groom. Linda has been with us for over ten years and knows me, my horses and my system. It really helps to have someone work with the horses and keep them going the same from week to week.My Trainers. I have had the opportunity to ride with trainers like Jos Lansink, Laura Kraut and Piet Raijmakers who have all helped me become the rider that I am today.

HNW: Describe your grand prix horses Raging Bull Vangelis S and Lordan. NN: I could not have two horses that are more different – they are complete opposites. Raging Bull Vangelis S, my stallion, is coming 16 and a bigger type with a more classical way of going, less blood and a much bigger stride. Lordan is nine and small – easily under 16 hands. He is very short strided and we add in almost every line we

ride. Lordan is more careful than he is scopey, while Raging Bill is more scopey than he is careful.

HNW: When you indulge, what’s your favorite fast food?NN: That’s a tough one. I would have to say it’s a tie between Five Guys and Chick-fil-A.

HNW: What are your 2014 goals?NN: We actually have a huge year coming up – first, the World Cup Finals in April and then World Championships [Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™] in September in Normandy. I have already qualified for the World Championships and it’s especially important because my region chooses our Olympians based on their performances there. The goal is that I and the other top Arab riders will punch tickets to the Olympics.

HNW: Is the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping something you have your sights on?NN: After the AIG Million, we will head to Ocala for the Great American Million and hopefully, if the scheduling works out, to Saugerties for the Zoetis Million in September. These events are exciting, but I try not to focus on the money at stake – I just try and focus on riding likes it’s any other class.

After several “in the money” placings this year, Nassar and Lordan jumped to their first grand prix win of the 2014 HITS Desert Circuit with an all-out gallop to the blue in the $33,500 HITS Desert Classic during Week IV. “When I landed after the second-to-last fence, I looked at the clock and saw that I only had ten seconds to get to the other end of the ring, so I put the pedal to the metal,” he said after the class admitted.

As the crowd watched the pair go from top speed to air borne within seconds, they had everyone wondering if this young rider and his little horse can clinch the Triple Crown of Show Jumping.

(Continued from Page 1) Both Gingras and Chad are undecided about whether they will attend the 2014 FEI World Cup Finals if qualified, but the milestone is not far off for either rider. “This is my first season stepping up into the World Cup classes, so I am just over the moon to even be here,” said Chad, who also piloted a mare – Santa Catarina LS La Silla – to second. “My horse was a rock star today. She is so honest and is really helping me to move up and get around these bigger courses.”

A jump-off between four fault rides was becoming a real possibility in the first round until Sean Crooks, riding for the United States and hailing from Wellington, Florida, jumped the first clear in the irons of Glen Youell’s Armegedon. Chad joined him two trips later before Gingras rounded out the group.

In the jump-off, Crooks rubbed a rail on the second-to-last fence, which eventually came down, landing him with four faults in 44.49 seconds. Chad posted a time of 48.14 seconds, but Floreen SFN’s stride paid off for Gingras, as she crossed the timers in 45.58 seconds for the win.

American rider Ashlee Bond Clarke of Hidden Hills, California was the fastest of the four-faulters from the first round aboard Little Valley Farms’ Chela LS for third. Fourth was awarded to Thursday’s FEI winner Nayel Nassar, representing Egypt on his own Lordan. Bliss Heers of Olivehain, California capped the top five

for the United States on Bridgeside Farms, LLC’s Cesar.

Saturday night was the final FEI World Cup qualifier of the 2014 winter season at HITS Thermal as attention now turns to who will qualify for the coveted AIG $1 Million Grand Prix on March 16. Weekly grand prix on Fridays and Sundays will continue over the next three weeks as riders race to qualify for the richest class in show jumping.

Charity Luncheon Raises $3,000 for Coachella Valley Community Trust

Coachella Valley Community Trust (CVCT) hosted a charity luncheon at the Go Rentals VIP Club on Sunday, February 23.

Grown from the realization that Indio, Coachella, Thermal, Mecca and North Shore all face issues of poverty, lack of transportation, lack of resources and fewer events for kids, Coachella Valley Community Trust was born. They aim to prevent crime, foster youth development, and provide improved quality of life for the youth of the Coachella Valley. Through a silent auction and private donations, the CVCT raised $3,000 for their mission.

To find out more about CVCT, call Kelli Cox at 951-252-4694, or visit cvcommunitytrust.org.

With fluctuating desert temperatures, the days can suddenly get quite hot. When combined with riding and all the activities that go on at the show, it is important to be aware that you do not become dehydrated*.

Dehydration is a condition that occurs when the loss of body fluid exceeds the amount taken in – this can result in the body’s ability to function normally. Symptoms of dehydration include a dry or sticky mouth, increased thirst, low urine output or dark yellow urine, dizziness, confusion, fainting and decreased ability to sweat.

We naturally lose water throughout the day in our sweat, urine, stool and in the form of water vapor when we breathe. Along with this water loss, small amounts of electrolytes (or salts) are also lost. If we drink filtered water and consume a healthy whole-foods diet, we are able to maintain this careful balance. However, as riders, grooms, trainers and stable managers, we are usually involved in strenuous physical activities when we are around the horses – when in the dry desert heat, we can easily become dehydrated.

Surprisingly, one of the last signs of dehydration is thirst. That is why you need to be proactive in making sure you are supplying your body with enough water. Everyone’s requirements for water will differ based on body composition, physical energy output, the duration of activity and the ambient conditions. As a general rule of thumb, the number of ounces you should consume in a day is your body weight divided by

two. Also, you can only absorb small amounts of water at a time, so it is ideal to sip water throughout the day, instead of chugging it all at once.

It is a good habit to begin your morning by drinking a glass of water as you get ready. Herbal teas and lemon water are also appealing options that can help you hydrate after you’ve been sleeping. However, coffee and other caffeinated drinks tend to be diuretics and can actually dehydrate your body, so they are not the best way to start your morning.

Throughout the day, being prepared with a bottle of pure water (that you can refill at the ingate) is usually good enough for mild to moderate activities. Just make sure you don’t get so wrapped up in your riding that you neglect to check in with yourself and drink enough water. You may want to invest in a stainless steel water bottle that you can keep by your side or in your grooming box.

If you are working out hard or constantly riding, you may need to replenish your electrolytes too. Sodium (found in regular table salt, Himalayan salt, or sea salt) is the main electrolyte to include in your rehydration drink, especially if you have been exercising for over an hour. For endurance, including a carbohydrate (a simple sugar such as that found in honey or fruit) can help to recover any lost glycogen stores and will help to replenish your energy.

One condition to be aware of is Hyponatremia. This is a rare, but serious condition affecting the amount of water around the cells in your body (this can be very dangerous for the brain). Hyponatremia relates to the water/sodium balance in the body, and can occur by over-consuming water or by losing too much sodium through long-term, intense activity. Although this is less common, it is important to mention as a caution against drinking too much water unnecessarily.

Lastly, if you reach for the commercially sold sports drinks, know that most contain artificial sugars, flavors and dyes, along with other unpronounceable chemical additives. While

they are marketed as a “must-have” for athletes of all levels, there are healthier alternatives:

1. WATER – reach for the purest water you can find. (Option: add a pinch of salt and squeeze of lemon)

2. HOME-MADE SPORTS DRINK – (there are many popular versions of this found online): 3 cups of water or herbal tea, ¼ teaspoon Himalayan or sea salt, ¼ cup fresh fruit juice, 1-2 tablespoon raw honey.

3. COCONUT WATER – this trendy drink is loaded with potassium (more than a banana), but you may want to add a little salt to certain brands. Also, look for non-concentrate versions when possible.

Remember that drinking enough water is one of the best things you can do for your health. Hydration not only benefits your physical performance, but can also support and improve your skin, digestion and mood. Sip water throughout the day and when you are active, and stay aware of your intake of both fluids and electrolytes in order to keep your body in peak condition.

*Most dehydration can be reversed by drinking water or water containing electrolytes, but keep in mind that you should always seek medical attention if there are any questions or you are not feeling well since moderate to severe cases of dehydration (or hyponatremia) can lead to coma or even death.

(Continued from page 1)Bond and Clarke met in 2012 at the Showpark Summer Classic after being introduced by Bond’s father. Six months later, the couple snuck away from the hustle of the HITS Desert Horse Park on Valentine’s Day in 2013 and returned engaged.

Bond admits that she never imagined she would marry a horseman. “I vowed to never date a rider, but Sage was my last exception,” she said with a laugh. “We are from two very different parts of the horse world, but I think we’ve found the best of both.”

While their engagement photos made a strong nod to the couple’s devotion to all things equine, the wedding day tie-in was more subtle. A guest list which consisted

of family and close friends were welcomed with horse shoe accents and “his and her” signature cocktails.

After the celebration, Bond and Clarke retreated for a two week Honeymoon in Paris, the south of France, Monaco and the

Amalfi Coast. But, as all devout horse people know, a trip to Europe isn’t complete without some horse shopping.

Upon Clarke’s return to the States, Bond stayed behind for five days and bought herself a wedding present – an eight-year-old mare named Cornancer which can be seen showing this season at HITS Thermal.Ashlee Bond and Sage Clarke after they said “I Do” at Saddle Rock Ranch in Malibu California. ©Love and Lemonade Photography

It all came down to the gallop in the $33,500 FEI HITS Desert Classic, presented by Zoetis, at HITS Thermal on Thursday. With only two horses in the jump-off, Nayel Nassar put the speed of his nine-year-old Hanoverian gelding Lordan to the test and bested Bliss Heers by fractions of a second.Nassar of Santa Clara, California represents the colors of Egypt and secured a jump-off in the HITS Desert Classic after chasing down Heers’ early clear in the first round. They would eventually be the lone two to advance.

Heers, who hails from Olivenhain, California, recently returned to American soil after riding in Europe for a time, and was the first to prove that the course designed by Mexico City’s Manuel Esparza could be jumped. She piloted Cesar, a 12-year-old gelding, for Bridgeside Farms, LLC. Heers and Nassar topped a field totaling 24 over a track of 13 obstacles and raced a tight time allowed of 80 seconds.

“It didn’t walk big – was fairly technical – but a tight time can make any track difficult,”

said Nassar. “I was a little surprised that there were only two clears, but I’m not complaining.”

Equine Aid Honors Leadline Riders

After a particularly bad colic scare a few years ago, Marcy Wehde decided enough was enough. She went to a show in July and competed for four days in 85 degree temperatures. Her horse didn’t drink enough water, came home and immediately coliced. What if he had simply drank more water? Could she have avoided that whole situation? From these questions, Equine Aid was born.

Equine Aid is an all-natural, organic, non-GMO powdered formula which, when added to a bucket of water, flavors the water and entices horses to drink. Made from human grade ingredients--alfalfa powder, molasses, and pink Himilayan rock salt, it’s all flavors that horses love. When added to water it’s like a horse cookie to them.

Equine Aid is available in individual packets for $2 per packet, or a box of twelve packets for $20. It is available for sale during HITS Thermal at Solea Equestrian, and in tack stores throughout the West Coast and Florida. Stop by Solea Equestrian for a free sample of the product! For more information, visit equineaid.com.

Most people dream about a horse whose “spook” is a better jump. For Hope Glynn, those dreams are a reality. Glynn, who hails from Penngrove, California, piloted Sabrina Hellman’s Woodstock in Friday’s $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix where the unfamiliar ring, new jumps and first hunter prix of the 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood Gelding’s season gave Glynn the advantage.

“This is his first week here and he was impressed by the surroundings, which helped me to get a better jumped out of him,” said

Glynn. “Where most horses spook, his spook is just a better jump.”

Glynn characterizes Woodstock as her “old faithful” and the pair has had a storied career together since the Hellman family first brought the gelding to Sonoma Valley Stables. They added Friday’s Devoucoux Hunter Prix in the Main Hunter Ring at HITS Thermal to their list of accolades after posting a first round score of 85.75 and leading the second round with a solid 87.

Macy Mitchell’s 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Ringmaster proved that he may have found his home in the hunter ring on Friday. After a brief hiatus in the jumpers, Mitchell of Hailey, Indiana entered him in his first-ever $1,500 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix and jumped to a win.

“I was very surprised,” said Mitchell, who trains with Teresa Englehart. “This was his first show back after a year off and we were just on our game for those bending lines

and turns.”Fifteen-year-old Mitchell admits that she has a soft spot for Ringsmaster’s personality, despite characterizing him as a “closet naughty”. “He pretends to be a good boy, but he’s always looking to play tricks,” said Mitchell.

The pair led the first round with a 78 and returned to impress with an 82 on their way to the win.

Kyle King Wins on ‘Horse of His Dreams’ at HITS Thermal

Quigley may not have many grand prix miles behind him, but his rider Kyle King of Ocala, Florida is looking forward to the 10-year-old gelding stepping up to the level with a bang. He is certainly on the right track after winning Sunday’s $30,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, at HITS Thermal.

“He’s the horse of my dreams,” said King. “Who knows where we go from here, but he’s the best horse I’ve ever had.”

Quigley is owned by Paul Politeski who broke the gelding and rode him up until last year when he moved into the grand pix ring with King. Politeski and King took Quigley to HITS Tucson last week in preparation for the HITS Desert Circuit and he jumped perfectly, according to King. “We got him [Quigley] fired up a little bit in Arizona. He was a little spooky in the Level 6 earlier this week, but jumped around great today,” said King.
