Carleigh Babbit: Not Your Every Day HITS Champion

Carleigh Babbit, nine, meticulous and in perfect form wearing jodhpurs and pink bows, guided her white pony Be My Valentine to Beginner Equitation Champion at HITS Saugerties last week. From outside the ring, there was nothing out of the ordinary about this smiling girl winning ribbons and dreaming of beating Olympic Medalists. Nothing appears to be holding Babbit back from chasing those goals. Not even the fact that she is deaf.

When Jai Smith-Rezac, owner of Century Mill Stables, was approached about giving lessons to a deaf girl five years ago, she never imaged she would find herself coaching that same girl at an “A”-rated HITS show.

The Los Angeles National Preview and Los Angeles National Horse Show, two of California’s premier Equestrian competitions traditionally held in early November, will move from their present location at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, California to Desert Horse Park in Thermal, California in the Fall of 2014.

They will be known as National Sunshine I (formerly the LA Preview) and National Sunshine II (formerly the LA National). Their dates will remain consistent, falling October 29 - November 2 and November 4-9. The shows will host top hunter/jumper events, medal finals and championships including the Onondarka Medal Finals, WCE Medal Finals, Desert Pony Hunter and Pony Jumper Finals.

Both shows will be FEI Sanctioned with National Sunshine I offering a $50,000 and

$75,000 FEI Class and National Sunshine II offering a $33,500 FEI Class, $100,000 CSIW2* World Cup Qualifier Grand Prix and $25,000 National Grand Prix.

When Nilforushan later realized the present facilities could not accommodate his vision and goals for the shows, he approached Tom Struzzieri about relocating them to HITS Desert Horse Park. An insider’s look at the top contenders in the HITS Championship at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York, September 3-7.

Lena Rae ReebLike most aspiring junior riders, Lena Rae Reeb may dream of Derby Final wins or HITS Championship success, but this humble, driven 15-year old is looking for more than just one-time glory. Reeb, of Weston, Connecticut may be on her way to big checks and unending ribbons, but her overarching riding goal is perfect consistency.

“I want to be able to get on any horse and ride it well,” she said.

Reeb began her life in the tack at six-years old and rides under the direction of Michele West at Larkspur Farm(owned by Reeb’s mother Leslie Kogos). Jumping her way through ponies into the Children’s Hunter ring, she was seventh in last year’s $250,0000 Final and well on her way to an impressive showing again this year. She guided her gelding Call Me to a qualifying win during HITS Saugerties Week IV and collected an early-season win with long-time mount Private Ryan – owned by Jamie Ringel – at HITS Ocala this winter.

“For me, it’s not about the money,” said Reeb of the approaching Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final. “It’s the opportunity to be involved in something so prestigious and new. The experience is unforgettable.”

A closer look at Lena Rae Reeb:

HNW: What is the highlight of your riding career?LRR: Winning the Eaton & Berube Children’s Hunter Pony Finals two years ago with Patriot. The format was so exciting and I couldn’t believe we won.

HNW: Describe your perfect horse.LRR: I like a quiet horse that can canter around on loose rein but still rounds up well. I have done some jumpers, but prefer the structure of a hunter ring. It’s more old-fashioned and I really like that old-school style.

HNW: Who is your riding idol?LRR: Jennifer Alfano. We got Call Me from SBS Farms a year and a half ago and I look up to her as a rider and trainer.

HNW: What’s it like to work so closely with your mom?LRR: We have a fantastic relationship and I love doing this with her. Both my parents are very supportive of my riding and when I’m away at shows it feels like home because they are always with me.

HNW: If you weren’t riding, what would you be doing?LRR: I am going into 10th grade at Weston High School and I would be playing softball. I gave up softball two years ago so I could ride full time.

HNW: Have you started making college plans?LRR: My dream is to continue my mom’s business someday, so after high school I plan to go to business school. I could never imagine doing anything outside the horse world – it’s the best and only thing I want to do with the rest of my life.

RIDERS To WATCH: Juniors Bask in Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final

continued from Page 1 “Some kids are born to ride and some kids have to work at it– Carleigh was born to ride,” said Smith-Rezac, “Though she is also tough and determined. Not only is it good for her to be riding, it’s an accomplishment.” With safe horses, engaged coaches and involved parents, it seems there’s nothing Carleigh can’t do.

Babbit was born deaf and without a balance nerve on either side of her body. When her older sister Kacie began riding lessons at Century Mill, her doctors recommended Martha and Robert Babbit use horses as a form of therapy for Carleigh. “We saw immediate results in her core strength from a few leadline lessons,” said Martha. “After her first class we knew this is what she was meant to do.”

While success in the show ring appears to come naturally to Carleigh, Smith-Rezac and her team of trainers admit they carefully considered how they would teach Babbit the basics without speaking to her. “It’s all about

visual communication,” said Smith-Rezac. “She has developed a sense of awareness far beyond her years.”

Fellow Century Mill Stables trainer Liz Kleinfeld is Babbit’s primary coach at home and took it upon herself to learn sign language. “Carleigh was accepted into the barn without hesitation,” said Smith-Rezac. “Kids, coaches and parents have all taken up an interest in signing – they want to be able to communicate with Carleigh.”

While most would consider Carleigh’s inability to hear a hindrance to her riding, Martha Babbit maintains that it may actually serve to help her daughter. “Because she can’t hear things that are scary, she doesn’t react. And because she doesn’t react, her horses don’t react,” said Martha.

Carleigh isn’t the only deaf child who rides at Century Mill now– Kleinfield teaches a group lesson with her and a classmate from Massachusetts’ Learning Center for the Deaf. “They are happiest when they are on horses,” said Babbit.

With Beginner Equitation confidently mastered, Carleigh is ready for bigger and better things. “She just started jumping cross rails and tells us she wants to ride professionally someday,” added Babbit. “I want people, deaf and hearing, to see her, be inspired and dream big no matter what.”

continued from Page 1 entertainment and special classes will betailored for each week. The shows will be designed for exhibitor and spectator alike. Evening competition will have additionaltouches and crowd pleasers with VIP luxuries and food second to none. They will provide riders and patrons with a unique experience and highly competitive levels.Nilforushan has a special place in his heart for the shows. The LA National gave him his first grand prix win early in his career. Born in Iran and now based in San Diego, he moved to the U.S. when he was 12 and loves California. He dreams of drawing top riders from around the world to the Sunshine Nationals. They will have the allure, quality and top prize money for becoming key stopping points on the trail to HITS’ Championship Qualifiers and FEI World Cup Finals.

“I want to add special classes, evening events and give more riders opportunities to compete,” Nilforushan said. “Moving the shows to the Desert Horse Park will allow me to do that.”

“My intention,” he continued, “mirrors the FEI’s and Tom’s: To raise the quality of sport in California and all over America… the blend of HITS’ energy, innovative history and Desert Horse Park’s outstanding facilities with the legacy, cachet and loyal following of these two shows, will be a dynamite combo--attracting riders from across the country and around the globe.” FEI sanctioning is still to be confirmed but Nilforushan, who will act as Technical Coordinator, is thrilled the Desert Horse Park will host. “These events are flagship horse shows in California,” he noted, “And HITS Desert Horse Park is the best facility on the West Coast.”

There will be extensive online coverage, videos, photos and press releases with exclusives. “The ‘buzz’ HITS’ generates, quality of service and competition--are essential elements for events of this type,” said Nilforushan.

“It’s always an honor to offer another FEI Competition,” Struzzieri noted. “We host national and international riders at Desert Horse Park in Thermal every winter, and look forward to showcasing the world’s best

in the fall as well. It’s a perfect time of year in Southern California.”

Struzzieri looks forward to working with Nilforushan and making these events remarkable. “These shows will be the best of both worlds, “ he noted, “Combining panache, personal attention and world class competition with outstanding facilities, crowd draw and sustained growth HITS’ Horse Shows have maintained over time.”

Summer months are hot. Combined with riding and activities at the show, it’s important to stay hydrated. * Dehydration occurs when the loss of body fluid exceeds the amount taken in. This results in the body’s inability to function normally. Symptoms include a dry or sticky mouth, increased thirst, low urine output or dark yellow urine, dizziness, confusion, fainting, and decreased ability to sweat.

We naturally lose water throughout the day in our sweat, urine, stool and water vapor when we breathe. Along with this loss, small amounts of electrolytes (or salts) are also lost. If we drink filtered water and consume a healthy whole-foods diet, we are able to maintain a careful balance. However, as riders, grooms, trainers and stable managers, we are usually involved in strenuous physical activities around horses –plus the hot summer sun, can easily lead to dehydration.

Surprisingly, one of the last signs of dehydration is thirst, which is why you must be proactive in supplying your body with enough water. Everyone’s requirements will differ based on body composition, energy expended, duration of activity and ambient conditions. As general rule of thumb, the number of ounces you should consume in a

day is your body weight divided by two. Also, you can only absorb small amounts of water at a time, so it’s ideal to sip water throughout the day, instead of all at once.

Always have a bottle of water on hand (that you can refill at the ingate). You may want to invest in a stainless steel water bottle you can keep by your side or in your grooming box. This is usually good enough for mild to moderate activities. Just make sure you don’t get so wrapped up in riding that you neglect to check in with yourself and drink it.

If you are working out hard or constantly riding, you may need to replenish your electrolytes too. Sodium (found in regular table salt, Himalayan salt or sea salt) is the main electrolyte to include in your rehydration drink, especially if you have been exercising for over an hour. For endurance, including a carbohydrate (a simple sugar such as that found in honey or fruit) can help to recover any lost glycogen stores and will replenish your energy.

Lastly, if you reach for sports drinks, know that most contain artificial sugars, flavors and dyes, along with other chemical additives. While they are marketed as a “must-have” for athletes of all levels, there are healthier alternatives:

1. Water: Reach for the purest water you can find. (Tip: add a pinch of salt and squeeze of lemon)

2. Home-made sports drink (there are many popular versions of this found online): 3 cups of water or herbal tea, ¼ teaspoon Himalayan or sea salt, ¼ cup fresh fruit juice, 1-2 tablespoon raw honey

3. Coconut Water: This trendy drink is loaded with potassium (more than a banana), but you may want to add a little salt to certain brands. Also, look for non-concentrate versions when possible.

Remember that drinking enough water is one of the best things you can do for your health. Hydration not only benefits your physical performance, but also supports and improves your skin, digestion, and mood. Sip water throughout the day and when you are active, stay aware of your intake of both fluids and electrolytes. This will keep your body in peak condition.

THE EquESTRIAN HEALTH CoACH: Staying Hydrated While at the Show by Kimball Willson, Certified Health Coach

*Most dehydration can be reversed by drinking water or water containing electrolytes, but keep in mind that you should seek medical attention if there are any questions or you are not feeling well. Moderate to severe cases of dehydration (or hyponatremia – overconsumption of water that imbalances electrolytes) can lead to coma or even death.

HITS, Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of Eric L. Straus as Senior Vice President. He will succeed Tony Hitchcock, who is retiring after a remarkable 25 year career with the company in the Fall of 2014. Mr. Straus will officially take up the post at HITS’ home base in Saugerties, New York, October 1, 2014.

Straus has 45 years of national and international equestrian experience, with proven business expertise in both for-profit and nonprofit environments. His knowledge of the Equine industry is extensive, from officiating major competitions and events to effectively growing sport horse foundations and overseeing facilities.

“HITS is a dynamic organization, the most successful of its kind in the United States and continues to grow and progress,” said Straus. “Tom [Struzzieri, HITS CEO and President] is building a bigger, stronger brand of HITS for exhibitors, spectators, sponsors--I’m very excited to be a part of it.”

Struzzieri noted, “Tony Hitchcock has been involved with HITS for over 25 years and Eric’s substantial equine background helps fill that huge vacancy. I will count on Eric to maintain our positive relationship with the Federation...We both served on the Board and Executive Committee and he truly understands the mechanics of the organization,” he added.

“Horses have remained an integral part of my life and horse sports opened many doors for me,” said Straus. This is reflected in his contributions to the equestrian world;

Trustee and Executive Committee Member of the American Horse Council (D.C.), National Horse Show Board of Directors and United States Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation’s Secretary and Executive Committee member; Member of the United States Hunter & Jumper Association (USHJA) Stewards and former member of Zone 1 Jumper Nominating Committee; “R” United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) judge and Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) Show Jumping Steward; FEI Chief Steward at the 2010, 2006 and 2002 World Equestrian Games, Jerez, Spain; Executive Director of the U. S. Equestrian Federation in 1996-1997; Chief Judge for Modern Pentathlon 1996 Olympic Games and 1987 Pan American Games. President and CEO of Equine Sports Group.

I’ve always admired Tom and what he has done in a creative sense with his shows,” said Straus. “He has a keen sense of timing and is very inventive, and I really like those qualities. It has proven to serve him and the horse show community, well.”

Straus is also a seasoned corporate and philanthropic board member. He was Senior Vice President for The Clark Estates, Inc., New York, New York, whose clients include the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Fenimore Art Museum, Farmers’ Museum, Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital and Otesaga Hotel and Resort, among others.

“I have learned invaluable lessons working in the equine industry, met interesting people, experienced highs and lows of the sport, and apply the lessons I’ve learned daily. I’m also blessed with an understanding wife whose non-equine background helps me maintain a healthy perspective on it all,” Straus observed.

He graduated from Colorado College with a BA in History and will reside in the Hudson Valley with his wife. He has two children, both in their 20s.

Eric L. Straus Makes a Move to HITS Horse Shows Michael Hughes Takes New Ride to Top in $10,000 Junior/A-o Jumper High Classic

A few weeks ago Michael Hughes received a call that drastically changed the landscape of his HITS Championship plans. Elm Rock, LLC approached Hughes about piloting 11-year old Selle Francais stallion Pauly du Breuil in the Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper High Classic at HITS Saugerties Week V.

“I have no idea how it all happened but I was excited and felt extremely lucky to get that call,” said Hughes. “I’ve seen this horse win ribbons before and was honored to be offered the ride.”

It turned out to be the sweetest of catch rides. They bested a competitive field of 32 junior and amateur riders who turned out over the weekend, hungry for a piece of $10,000. The classic win, a qualifier for the Bayer’s Legend $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix, crowned Hughes the highest money-earner during the qualifying period. He has pocketed $18,300 aboard eight different horses.

But of “Pauly,” as he’s fondly known around the barn, he remarked, “He’s the easiest horse I’ve ever ridden – knows his job and does it perfectly,”

Hughes put the stallion’s big, adjustable stride to work in the 11-horse jump-off, chasing down Madeline McDermott and her own Bull Run’s Becky Blue. She set the Great American Time to Beat at 36.69 seconds from the third spot and held tight to the lead until Hughes entered the ring on Pauly three trips later.

“There were a lot of options and places where we could turn really tight back on jumps,” said Hughes. “He [Pauly] doesn’t spend a lot of time in the air, so I was confident we could catch the leader.”

Despite having the ride for less than a month, Hughes had faith in Pauly’s impressive stride and unmatched scope. continued on Page 13

McDermott settled for second behind Hughes and Kelli Cruciotti took third in the irons of her own Chamonix H.

The Bayer’s Legend® $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix is rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after classes of the HITS Championship and tempting some riders to choose junior/amateur glory over grand prix stakes.

“This is my final year as a junior and last opportunity to compete in the class, so I’m focusing on it,” said Hughes, who also won a Week III qualifier aboard Luxina for Christina Fried.

With eight high classic mounts consistently in the ribbons, Hughes is now faced with a tough question – who will he pilot the first weekend in September?

“I’m still deciding which horse is best suited for the Final – it could be any one of them,” he said. “They all have what it takes.”

Hughes currently sits sixth in the Bayer’s Legend® High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix Rider Rankings with Luxina. Watch how last-minute qualifying unfolds at HitsShows.com.

HITS Thermal expands to eight weeks as Championship fever spikes

From record-breaking numbers and celebrated grounds improvements, to an AIG $1 Million Grand Prix that crowned California-girl Ashlee Bond Clarke queen, HITS Thermal 2014 enjoyed a wildly successful winter. As a result, HITS, Inc. is proud to announce the addition of a January 13-18 week to the 2015 HITS Desert Circuit.

Now an eight-week USEF Premier Rated series over a nine-week period, the Desert Circuit will run January 13 through March 15 with four shows in the first half and four shows in the second half, separated by an off-week February 10-15. In addition to the expanded schedule, riders with their eye on HITS’ big-money finals will not only enjoy additional opportunities to qualify for the AIG Million on March 15, but also the high stakes HITS Championship in Saugerties this next September.

There was a new kid on the Devoucoux Hunter Prix block this weekend. Shannon Hogue of Westchester, Pennsylvania decided last minute that her own Given was a contender, post-entered and finished sixth out of 63.
