Read each week for an insider’s look at who we think will be the top West Coast contenders for the HITS Championship at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York September 3-7.

Hannah Von HeideggerHannah Von Heidegger’s overall riding goal, like that of many young riders, is to one day make the U.S. Olympic Team. Her immediate goals, however, are to win her first grand prix at the 2014 HITS Desert Circuit, and qualify for the Bayer’s Legend Injectable Solution (hyaluronate sodium) $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix at the HITS Championship.

Sixteen-year-old Von Heidegger hails from Los Angeles, rides with Will Simpson and will be piloting three primary mounts in the desert this year. Between a feisty,

‘red-headed’ mare and two new rides, Von Heidegger has big plans for the jumper rings. An accomplished hunter and equitation rider in her own right, Von Heidegger is now chasing grand prix glory.

Von Heidegger challenged the Desert Circuit I Junior/Amateur-Owner High Jumper Classic with both Axl Rose and E-Unanime De La Haie, owned by Monarch International.

Simpson, an Olympic Gold Medalist, is confident that Von Heidegger is going places in his sport. “It’s a very rare opportunity for a trainer like myself to have a rider with all the ingredients,” said Simpson of his student.

“She has the guts, the determination and

the feel – everything it takes to be a jumper rider. The only thing she lacks is experience, and I have plenty of that,” he added with a grin.

According to Simpson, it’s only a matter of time before Von Heidegger’s name is making headlines in the show jumping world.

Here’s a closer look at Hannah Von Heidegger:

HNW: How old were you when you first sat on a horse?HVH: I started riding when I was three, took a few years off because I thought I wanted to be a gymnast, but came back to the saddle when I was seven. HNW: When you aren’t riding or competing, what are you doing?HVH: School work! I am in 11th grade at Campbell Hall High School in Los Angeles and right now I am studying for my SATs. I still have a year and a half to think about colleges, but right now my top choice is Georgetown University.HNW: Who is your favorite sports team?HVH: My twin brother Max’s basketball team. HNW: What’s your biggest strength as a rider?HVH: My hunger and determination to do well and win. I really want it and I will do what it takes.HNW: What’s your biggest weakness as a rider?HVH: I am really hard on myself.

Hannah Von Heidegger is seeing dollar signs thinking about competing at the HITS Championship in September for a share of $250,000 and will ride in the Jr/A-O High Jumper Classics at HITS Thermal in an effort to head east this fall.

She concluded, “It’s certainly the most amount of money I have ever ridden for and it would be great to get there.”

The alarm goes off at 5am and you have a full day of riding in the hot desert sun, so you stop to grab a quick morning pastry and vanilla coffee. As the day goes by, you skip lunch and snack on the tack room treats. By dinner time, you're exhausted, hungry and will eat just about anything that comes your way. Does this pattern sound familiar to you? Many riders are challenged by how to properly fuel themselves at the show. That is why it is crucial to make a plan and set aside a few minutes in your day to eat well.

Marisa Metzger explains that, “it is important to be healthy because you need to be sharp. I can feel a huge difference in my riding in terms of knowing where I am and being more in tune when I eat right, versus eating wrong.”

PLANNINGHaving a plan is the first step to ensuring that you will eat healthy meals that will support you in riding your best. After all, showing is not a weekend getaway where you can go back to eating well on Monday. This is the weekly lifestyle of an equestrian athlete! Before heading to the show, take a few minutes to consider the following:

Are you going to pack your lunch or buy it at the concession stand?

Where is the local grocery store?

Will you have access to a refrigerator? Or do you have a cooler?

Have you downloaded local restaurant menus?

Have you created a grocery list and set aside time to go shopping?

TIMINGMarisa's biggest challenge is having time to eat. “When you're showing 12 horses, and they are back to back, it's hard to find time to sit down and eat. So, you end up munching on things that have a lot of sugar

that make you feel like you're doing well until you crash. If you feel like you're wavering a little bit, you have to stop and take time.”

Do you eat your lunch running between rings or worse, between rides? Eating a meal may only take 10 – 15 minutes, so sit down, breath and eat calmly, noticing the flavors, chewing your food thoroughly. Chewing leads to smooth digestion and greater assimilation of nutrients by initiating the release of digestive enzymes that break down food. If you are having trouble making time, set an alarm on your phone and schedule the break for yourself. Taking a few extra minutes to eat mindfully will help you get in touch with your body and what it needs, and will also prevent indigestion when you ride!

CHOOSINGMarisa is aware of what her body needs to perform her best. “I am serious about my protein; I have to have two eggs in the morning every time I'm showing. I learned a couple years ago that if you don't start your day well, with a lot of protein, you can never catch up.”

If you have to eat at the show, try to go to the food vendors early before the crowd so you can ask them to make modifications if necessary. Look for meals that have protein for energy, such as morning eggs, the turkey breast sandwich, or a salad with chicken. Grab a menu in advance - knowing what your options are before you

are hungry and at the front of the line will help you to make better, healthier choices.

Packing food is the best option because you have complete control over what you eat. Set aside time the evening before to make your meals so you are not rushing in the morning. A morning protein

shake may be a good solution for a quick morning breakfast. Also, keeping a stash of healthy food in the tack room will help to keep you on track and eating well. Single servings of nuts, veggies with hummus, fruit with nut-butters, canned fish, and hardboiled eggs are great options to have on hand when hunger strikes at the show.

Remember, taking the time to fuel your body with healthy food will help to give you the energy you need to ride your best!

Duncan McFarlane Wishes the Best for ‘Horse of a Lifetime’ By Lindsay Yandon

The grand prix ring at HITS Thermal will soon be missing the antics of one Mr. Whoopy. The sale of the 12-year-old stallion to Saer Coulter and Copernicus Stables was announced last week and Whoopy (Contendro—Whoopy, Watzmann), previously owned by Simone Coxe and Duncan McFarlane, will make his way east next week with Coulter and trainers Markus and Meredith Beerbaum. Mr. Whoopy, 12, came to McFarlane, who rides for New Zealand but is based in San Ramon, California, as a five-year-old. From the moment they met, McFarlane knew he was special. “He is the kindest horse I have ever been around and truly enjoys what he does,” he said.

McFarlane has been riding Mr. Whoopy since the stallion was five and their top placings have McFarlane currently sitting fourth in the North American West Coast League World Cup standings.

Helen McNaught, McFarlane’s wife and business partner, characterized Mr. Whoopy as the ‘horse of a lifetime’, to which McFarlane admittedly agreed. “I don’t think there’s anything this horse can’t do!” he said. “There isn’t a course in the world that he can’t jump.”

Known best for their tendency to save the stallion’s jump for big events, McFarlane and McNaught did just that to land some impressive wins during their campaign together. Highlighted by a second place in the 2011 Zoetis $1 Million Grand

Prix at the HITS Championship in Saugerties, New York, 3rd in the 2013 AIG $1 Million Grand Prix in Thermal and a handful of World Cup qualifying wins, Mr. Whoopy and McFarlane have experienced some of the greatest highs in the sport.

“I remember walking into the ring in Saugerties for the Zoetis Million and thinking, ‘what am I doing here?’” said McFarlane. “But Whoopy really stepped up and he jumped incredibly that day.”

Coulter is spending most of the winter in Wellington, Florida, but will be in Thermal, California this week to compete Springtime in the World Cup qualifier during HITS Desert Circuit II. She’ll take Mr. Whoopy back to Wellington, before he accompanies her to show in Europe this summer.

“Duncan and Helen have done an incredible job producing him,” said Coulter of San Francisco. “We’ve watched him compete with Duncan for several years and always thought he was an impressive horse.” Coulter tried Mr. Whoopy in November during the Los Angeles National and, according to her, is looking forward to his playful personality.

“It takes time to get to know a horse – he and Duncan were great partners – but he has an amazing personality. He is playful, but he is also very smart,” said Coulter.

For McFarlane, Whoopy’s playful nature was a sure sign of happiness. “I think we can all learn a lot from this horse,” he said. “He comes out every day with a smile on his face and puts everyone around him in a good mood. He truly loves his job and I was lucky enough to be his designated driver.”

McFarlane admits that while it’s always a hard decision to let one of your top horses go, he sees a good match in Mr. Whoopy and Coulter. “He’s a very sensitive horse, but Saer has a great team behind her and she seems to really bond with her horses,” he said. “We have done our very best to leave him with a lot left, and I think he will continue to be great.”

Ashlee Bond Clarke rode to an “icing on the cake” win aboard Little Valley Farms’ Chela LS in the first $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, of the season. A concussion at the Los Angeles National sidelined her in early November, and she admitted that just being back in the show ring was enough. “I was going to be happy today no matter what the results were,” she said. “Considering what happened to me, today was just a positive day.”

After retiring the partner of a lifetime, Cadett 7, this year, Bond Clarke admits that she and Chela LS are developing a similar partnership.

“It’s hard to say that she is the most game horse I have ever ridden because she has big shoes to fill, but she is beyond careful, naturally fast and super smart,” said Bond Clarke of the mare she purchased from Simon Nizri in July. Chela LS will be coming ten this year. “If I get her focused and keep myself in check, she is game for anything.”

While a new ride for Bond Clarke, the pair has 14 grand prix starts and already three wins un-der their belt. The goal, says Bond Clarke, is the World Cup Qualifiers offered at HITS Thermal during the winter circuit.

Christian Heineking continued from Page 1of Mecklenburg, Germany and earned his Pferdewirtschaftsmeister - the highest level of training in Germany – early in his career. He was mentored by famed German trainers including the likes of Michael Thieme, father of 2011 Zoetis Million victor André Thieme.

According to Heineking, he grew up riding casually, but always knew that one day horses would be a full-time part of his life. “I always knew that this is what I wanted to do, but I never thought it would take me here,” he said. While training and riding young horses, preparing them for a grand prix future, Heineking makes many nods to his traditional foundation. “I build a strong basis and use fundamental German methods, including speaking German to bring the horses along.”

In the U.S., Heineking met and married Erin Davis last May before becoming head trainer at her family’s farm, October Hill. Both Heineking and Davis-Heineking took to the grand prix ring during Desert Circuit I and plan to have several horses competing in the CSI-W2* events coming up during II and IV. “I am lucky enough to have very capable horses and the goal is to hopefully qualify for some big classes and get Selena to the International scene,” said Heineking.

The stylish, soft-spoken Heineking started the Desert Circuit off on top of the AIG Million Standings, but will have six weeks of competition to defend his title. No matter the outcome, there is one sure thing about AIG Million Sunday – not a single person will be thinking “Heineking who?”.

Amateur Alec Lawler Impresses in Grand Prix Ring

After riding in a Junior/Amateur-Owner High Jumper Classic earlier in the day, Alec Lawler of Atherton, California stepped up to the big time on Sunday and bested a field of 32 horse-and-rider combinations in the $50,000 Tuff Rider/Equine Couture Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis.

The senior earth systems major at Stanford University rides with Burt Mutch, and admits that “the goal” is to ride professionally upon his graduation. “We are here aiming for the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix and both World Cup Qualifiers while we are here in Thermal,” said Lawler.

Anyone watching Sunday’s event at HITS Thermal would agree that Lawler has the talent and the horses to get him to the top of the sport. He piloted two self-owned mounts with Agamemnon and Dauphin De Muze, jumping to the blue with the latter, an 11-year-old imported Belgian Warmblood gelding.

Saturday, February 1 is Pony Club Day at HITS!

United States Pony Club (USPC) members from all over Southern California will visit HITS Thermal February 1. USPC develops character, leadership, confidence and sense of community in youth through a program that teaches the care of horses, riding and a variety of mounted sports. What separates USPC from other youth equestrian organizations is the emphasis that is placed on horse management.

Stop by the Pony Club booth located just outside the GoRentals VIP Club to bid on silent auction items. All proceeds will benefit the USPC National Competition in Kentucky. If any riders, trainers or ex “pony clubers” are interested in getting involved with Pony Club Day at HITS, see Elizabeth in the horse show office.

The West Coast’s top hunter riders flexed their muscles this weekend at HITS Thermal and battled for top prizes in the first $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix of the HITS Desert Circuit. John French of Woodside, California and Jenny Karazissis of Calabasas, California traded off at the top, with French collecting first and third, while Karazissis was second and fourth.

French and Elizabeth Gabler’s Soldier were the pair to beat, earning a pair of 87s for the top prize. French imported Soldier, an eight-year-old gelding from Ireland, two years ago and sold him to Gabler. “He is such an easy going horse,” said French. “He has done the Medals and the Maclays with Sophie Simpson and did the WIHS Equitation Finals at the Washington International Horse Show last year as a seven-year old.”

Not only did Soldier compete in Washington, he won the Equitation Final with Maddy Darst aboard, proving that he can win in any ring.

Katie CookMeets Her Match

Katie Cook had never jumped a jump on Symphony, owned by Amy Knox, before she arrived at HITS Thermal last week. The pair became fast friends, however, jumping to three blue ribbons during Week I, winning the Marshall & Sterling Adult Medal on

Friday and guiding Symphony to the top of an Adult Hunter class on Saturday before winning the $1,500 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix on Sunday.

“This horse jumps great from anywhere,” said Cook. “I always know that whatever the distance, he is always going to give me a great effort.”

Eduardo Sanchez Navarro Makes Mexico Proud

Rising to the occasion that was Martin Otto’s course, Eduardo Sanchez Navarro of Cruz Manca, Mexico topped a field of 26 as the only double-clear effort in Sunday’s High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic, presented by Bayer’s Legend. He piloted his own Alfie Scappino BMW.

“I thought the course would be a challenge and that there would be very few clear,” said Navarro. “The design turned out to be just right, however. The numbers were perfect.” Seven advanced to the jump-off.

The first week of competition at HITS Thermal was a confidence builder for Navarro and the perfect preface for his foremost goal – to move up to the grand prix level later in the circuit. “We started the circuit getting the horses back into showing, but Alfie jumped great and I look forward to getting him into a grand prix soon,” he said.
