420 kV cable technology

For420 kVcables,therearecurrentlytwoalternativestotraditionalfluidoilimpreg-natedpaperinsulation :

•cableswithPPLPinsulation,consistingofthree-layerlaminatedpaperandpolypropylenetapes,formedintoribbonsandimpregnatedwithoil.

PPLPinsulation,whichwasintroducedattheendofthe0’s,isstilllimitedtocablestobeusedatavoltageof400 kVorhigher.Thisisdueontheonehandtoitsprice,whichishigherthanthepriceofpaper,andontheothertotheincreasinglygeneral-izeduseofXLPEinsulationforvoltagesupto220 kVand400 kV.
