Dear Readers, As the Summer comes to an end I have to say I hate the thought of ‘back to school’ and the added pressure that accompanies it, however, I guess we’ll all just slot into the autopilot system and adapt as always, much as we fear it! Events are always limited in the Summer but it was wonderful to attend the ‘Wear Red for Straight Ahead’ lunch in Maryborough Hotel organized solely by Angie with the media support of ‘HI’. It was one of those unique warm Summer days. Ladies enjoyed a chilled sparkling reception in the gardens and orangery with mentalist and magician on hand to entertain, lunch thereafter with Rebecca Storm and special guests Lisa Murphy and Gerard Keane added that extra sparkle to the day. To see so many lovely ladies in red was really magical and what an enjoyable day from start to finish! I also decided it was time to go for a more intensive facial treatment, as this is something I have been

threatening for a while, and it was great to finally visit ‘Rejuvenate’ Glanmire. Sandra Barry is a true pro and the ‘Meso Vytal’ treatment was more than amazing. I’m definitely one of those women who deny themselves the luxury of facials and beauty treatments but as I get older I absolutely see the added benefits so this is something I vow to repeat a little regularly as opposed never! My family and I also escaped for an overnight to Ashbourne and Tayto Park and this was a very impressive family day and so accessible from all corners of Ireland. Read a little more inside on this. But exciting times are ahead and plans are already in motion for the 2015 HI STYLE AWARDS. I really look forward to this event as it is definitely very glamorous and absolutely entertaining with our vibrant host Amanda Brunker. Many have asked me ‘can anyone attend’ and the answer is ‘yes’ just make sure you book you ticket(s) as early as possible. Anyway all enjoy the read and the Autumn season.

MISS IRELAND CONTESTANTS

GILLIAN FORDE

How did you feel when you won Miss Cork?

Ecstatic! I was so shocked because I never expected to win. I could not stop shaking when they called my name. It was such a surreal experience and I will never forget that night.

What’s been the best part of winning your title?

The best part of winning the title is the ability to use my title as a platform to promote the amazing charities in Cork. I’ve worked with so many different organisations and doing so has helped raise awareness for these charities. It’s so important to get involved in your community and help those less fortunate. The people of Cork have been outstanding with their support and I am so proud to

come from such a wonderful place.

How have you prepared for Miss Ireland final?

To prepare for Miss Ireland as well as completing my six month college placement has made me extremely organised. I have really focused on my ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ project by working with multiple charities such as The Mercy Foundation, Cork Penny Dinners, The Girl’s Club Cork, Cork Association for Autism, Cope Foundation, Irish Cancer Society, Pieta House and Focus Ireland. Of course I have had all my dresses chosen for months! The final will be here before we know it and

I am so excited to represent Cork on the stage.

What would it mean to win MI?

Winning Miss Ireland would be a dream come true! Since a young age I have followed the competition and I love what the title symbolises – an intelligent, ambitious young woman who uses her title to make a difference on behalf of her country. I believe I have what it takes to represent my beautiful country on the world stage so fingers crossed! Whatever happens I will be delighted just to have been a part of this experience.

NALLAIG MALONE

How did you feel when you won Miss Limerick?

When I won Miss Limerick I was absolutely over the moon, it opened up a world of opportunities for me and I’m enjoying and taking in every minute of it.

What’s been the best part of winning your title?

The best part about winning the title is being able to shine a light on the local charities that I’m involved in such as Sophie’s journey Foundation, Friends of the Elderly and Mid-West Spina Bifida association. And creating as much

awareness as possible.

How have you prepared for Miss Ireland final?

Since winning Miss Limerick I’ve been doing modelling classes with Celia Holman Lee, which has helped me a lot. I’ve bought about a million dresses trying to get the right ones haha and I’ve been busy almost every day with my

charities, promotions and interviews.

What would it mean to win MI?

Oh my god where do I start, winning Miss Ireland would mean the world to me. I want to be an ambassador for the Irish Language on the World stage because I’m fluent in our native language and to make it more current. I would love to bring the crown back to Limerick because it would be great for my city and create more awareness for my local charities. All previous Miss Ireland’s are such influential women and it would be an honour to have the same Title as these women.

MAIREAD BREATHNACHLISA O’SULLIVANHow did you feel when you won your title?

I was absolutely shocked and delighted! It took a long time to sink in!

What’s been the best part of winning your title?

The best part about winning the title has for me been all the charity events I’ve gotten to be a part of! Uv met some lovely and amazing people through it

whom I probably wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for this.

How have you prepared for Miss Ireland final?

To prepare for miss Ireland I have been organising sponsors to help cover costs, I’ve been doing lots of dress shopping, I’m also looking into what I’ll do

as my talent and preparing answers to possible questions!

What would it mean to win MI?

Winning miss Ireland would mean the world to me! I’d love to go further in representing my country. Showing the world what Ireland has to offer!

How did you feel when you won Miss Kerry South?

It was such a surprise when my name was called. Never in a million years did I imagine that I would be a finalist in Miss Ireland.

What’s been the best part of winning your title?

I have never seen my family and friends so proud of me and for me that is the

best part about winning.

How have you prepared for Miss Ireland final?

At the moment there is a lot of preparation underway between attending charity

events and organising dresses. This whole experience seems surreal.

What would it mean to win MI?

I would see winning Miss Ireland as a huge privilege. I would be honoured to represent my country in the Miss World pageant as it is such a respected competition. It would also open so many doors for me in the modelling industry which has always been a dream of mine.

ELAINE GALVIN

How did you feel when you won Miss Clare?

I was extremely overwhelmed when I won Miss Clare. I really did not expect to win.

What’s been the best part of winning your title?Personally the best part of winning Miss Clare is getting involved in local charity work. Since winning the competition I have been involved in a lot of fund-raising events and even hope to go to Belarus later this year with the Burren Chernobyl project, one of the charities I was associated with it.

How have you prepared for Miss Ireland final?

I have spent a good deal of time preparing for the competition. I have been researching questions that could possibly be asked and brushing up on my current affairs. Also, I have been practicing my walk on

a regular basis, as it is something the judges will be watching on the night.

What would it mean to win MI?

I have a love for adventure and to win Miss Ireland would kick start the biggest adventure of my life. It would be such an honour to represent my country at Miss World. I would hope to embody the role of Miss Ireland, as I am very outgoing, driven and willing to get involved in every venture that comes my way while also being down to earth and not afraid to get my hands dirty. I would hope to do more charity work as it is of great importance to me and I love to give back to the community.

LAUREN BROWNE

How did you feel when you won Miss Cork South? When I won miss cork south I was absolutely over the moon! It was such a great feeling! The thought of being in the final of Miss Ireland was overwhelming and at the same time a bit frightening as I knew the final was only three weeks away and I had so much to do!

What’s been the best part of winning your title? The best part of winning the title of miss Cork South has to be recognising the huge support from my family and friends. I am being overwhelmed with good luck messages on social media and from the people in the local area. I am so grateful to have such great support behind me in preparation for the final.

How have you prepared for Miss Ireland final? With the final only weeks away , the preparation is in full swing. As part of the final there is a project on beauty with a purpose which is about how you can use your title and place in the final to raise awareness for different charities and organisations. The charity which I have chosen is the Irish motor neuron association. This is a charity that is very close to my heart. It is such a worthy charity and needs all the fundraising it can get. This weekend I will be attending the cape clear fun day where all the proceeds

raised are going to the Irish motor neuron disease association.

What would it mean to win MI?If I was to win Miss Ireland it would be such an incredible experience. It is a dream I have always had and its unbelievable that it is in reach. It would be a fantastic experience and I would enjoy every moment and do my utmost best to be the best ambassador for my country. For the time being, I am just going to enjoy being a part of such an incredible competition which has given me so many opportunities to date. I am so grateful to be a contestant in the Miss Ireland final and to win the title and travel to china would be the cherry on top!

How did you feel when you won Miss Tipperary?

When I won miss Tipperary I was so overwhelmed because I wasn’t expecting it. I was in utter shock, I remember it well. I couldn’t stop shaking. It was certain a moment I’ll never forget.

What’s been the best part of winning your title? The best part about winning the title is to be able to represent my county. I’m proud of my roots and where I come from, and it means a lot to me to be able to be a representative.

How have you prepared for Miss Ireland final?

Miss Ireland required a lot of preparations. I’ve spent a lot of time in the gym. I’ve done charity work. And I’ve also had to make time to relax as at times things can get hectic and it’s important for me to have a clear

head to be able to keep on top of things physical and mental preparation is so important !

What would it mean to win MI?

Winning miss Ireland would mean the world to me. A lot of work and preparation goes into the competition and I would love to see my hard work pay off. I’ve had a lot of support throughout my journey and I’d love to be able to do everyone and myself proud.

Q: Tell us about the businesses you are

involved in?

A: Educogym is unique; it helps you to train

smarter with special equipment called the Time

Machine and we are the only gym in the world with

a proven university research 12-day transformation

programme. Educogym offers specialised

20-minute personal training sessions on the Time

Machine, tailored to each client, combined with

an individual nutritional programme. You can also

train like a celeb at Educogym, as Darren Clarke,

2016 Ryder Cup Captain has lost 4 stone training

with Educogym in the K Club and singer Robbie

Williams also trained with Educogym LA for his

current 2015 world tour.

Q: You plan to open a new Educogym in

Ballincollig, tell us about the reason for this?

A: I pride myself on my Cork roots; I’m a loyal

Corkonian! When I setup my first business in 2007

my aim was to provide a high quality local service

to the people of Cork. I wanted to keep things

local and make a difference to people’s lives. Since

the launch of Educogym our reach has spread

to all corners of Cork and further afield. I’m

delighted to have clients from diverse backgrounds,

a true reflection of Cork society today. I’ll always

continue to grow and expand my business in Cork and help even more people

achieve their goals and to feel fantastic! I’m very excited to open my third Educogym

in Ballincollig and offer another high quality, results based gym.

Q: Tell us about the New Minds Beauty Academy?

A: Our College offers highly sought after, world recognised ITEC qualifications

in Personal Training, Fitness Instruction, Nutrition, Studio Cycle, Sports Massage,

Holistic Massage, Beauty Therapy and Makeup Artistry. Since the launch of New

Minds Academy in 2013 we have become the largest independent private ITEC

accredited college in Ireland. Through our high quality and internationally recognised

courses, expert tutors and state of the art 7,000 square foot facilities, we are able

to provide excellence in education and training. We have doubled the amount of

courses available to the point of capacity. We continue to innovate and add new

workshops and additional courses that new and past students use to up skill. In the

future we are looking to expand New Minds Academy into three additional counties

in Ireland, over the next two years.

Q: You believe passionately about the importance of fitness for the mind

and body?

A: Yes, I love exercise and it is vital for health, both mentally and physically. There

are many reasons why it is so easy to make the Educogym system part of your

lifestyle. Firstly it only takes 20 minutes, three times a week; therefore it is much

easier to stay focused and avoid boredom. Secondly, armed with the training in focus

and concentration, you can experience a mental workout that keeps your mind clear

throughout. Thirdly, the intense nature of the exercise produces endorphins in the

brain, giving you that feel-good factor. This all leads to a workout, which is both

enjoyable, and leaves you feeling invigorated, ready to take on the world!

Q: Do we all need to look after ourselves more than we

do?

A: It is extremely important to look after yourself and your health.

The Educogym programme is tailored to a busy modern lifestyle

and helps people to enjoy a work, home and fitness balance.

Studies have shown that there are three vital elements needed to

produce real results. Educogym has created a system that teaches

you to Focus, Train and Nourish. Combined, these tools create a

collaborative force to empower you to a completetransformation.

The Educogym training is only 20 invigorating minutes following

a scientifically advanced workout and clients train three times per

week.

Q: There is a lot of talk about obesity in Ireland and about

what we will be like in the future as a nation, what advice

would you give to people?

A: The WHO recently reported that by 2025 Ireland would be one

of the world’s most overweight nations. The best advice I could

give is to get active and more importantly to eat correctly! It is

extremely important to look at the foods you are consuming, not

just the calories! Our body needs fuel to function, the aim of the

Educogym Nutrition Program is to educate clients on the best

nutrition to improve their level of health and allow their body the

best opportunity of vitality.

Q: Do you feel a sense of optimism about the future in

Cork, given the challenges of recent years?

A: Yes, definitely! I always have a positive outlook on life; once my

third Educogym opens in Ballincollig I plan to continue the success with a fourth

gym in Cork. This also means growing my team and helping my employees to

develop long-term careers in the healthy and fitness industry. Since the launch of my

business 8 years ago people have always supported me and I always make an ffort to

support local businesses and charities, however I can. There is definitely a loyalty in

the Cork, which is encouraging.

Q: Your husband Damien and yourself are a great team, how important is

it to have that support of each other?

A: It is extremely important knowing that you have a partner to support you both

at work and at home. We work together full-time, we are around each other 24/7

and we still get on, which is a good sign! We use our different strengths to help each

other, our relationship and the business. I look after the day-to-day running of the

company; the staff, the customers and administration. Damien on the other hand is

the vision of the business, he looks at our strategy and development, and he is the

force behind our expansion. Together we make a powerful team.

Q: What are three key things for you to do on your list of ‘things I would

love to do?

A: 1. Grow the Educogym brand internationally, expanding our presence into

different countries and cultures.

2. Keep growing and training our staff to reach their full potential, in turn

continuing to drive our excellence of service and helping to make Educogym the

worlds best gym

3. Continue to encourage my son Paul to pursue success in his golfing career. (I’m

his no.1 fan!)

August Favorites

If there is one lady who never gets it wrong it is Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Be it hair, makeup or clothes she always gets it right and pulls off a flawless, classic look. Her go to makeup look is simple, bronzed with a slight smokey eye and something which can easily be achieved with these makeup bag essentials.

Get Rosie’s Makeup Look

1. Charlotte Tilbury Wonder GlowThis is that supermodel glow in a bottle! I love nothing more than a dewy makeup look and this is the product which is the perfect base for that. This is an illuminating primer that is equally as beautiful on the skin with-out makeup and mixed with moisturiser to give your skin a youthful glow.

2. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk FoundationThis foundation is the next step to creating Rosie’s dewy skin. This foundation is for all skin types and has a sheer to moderate cover-age. Its lightweight and silky texture glides on seamlessly while adding to the healthy glow from the Wonder Glow. This combination provides the perfect base like in Rosie’s look.

3. Benefit Hoola BronzerHoola is not only a great bronzer but is great for contouring also. Rosie’s cheek bones have been contoured along with her nose and forehead and this is the perfect product for this. To find where to contour your cheek-bones, take a makeup brush and roll it down your cheeks in a diagonal line until it falls under your cheekbone. This is where you slightly brush a little of the Hoola bronzer along with your jawline and outline of the bridge of your nose.

4. Bobbi Brown Pot Rough in Fresh MelonNot only is this blush perfect for this look, it is a great summer blush also. It gives a slight coral flush to the cheeks and because it is a cream blush it adds to the dewy effect of the makeup look. This can also be used a lip gloss so this is a great two in one product! You simply tap it on with your fingers and blend it in.

5. No7 Shade and Define Eyeshadow Stick in Cool MinkThis is a perfect match to the eyeshadow used on Rosie. It is a cream eyeshadow with a slight shimmer to it and will layer easily with eyeliner and pop blue eyes especially beautifully.

6. Inglot Gel Liner in No 77This is the holy grail of eyeliners and stays put all day without even so much of a smudge. This can be used to frame the eye with a slight cat eye like on Rosie with a very thin line close to the lash line.

7. HD Brows Eye and Brow PaletteRosie’s eyebrows are very defined and filled in heavily with a powder. The HD eye and brow palette has a shade for all hair colours and will also give this defined brow look. Not only that but you can create the perfect smokey eye with all these colours also.

When did you discover your passion and talent for design?I have always wanted to be a designer, I don’t ever

remember not wanting to do it… apart from when I

had a slight notion that I wanted to be a vet but that

thought disappeared quite quickly. I have always been

creative and as my dad was also in the clothing industry

I guess I kept seeing more things to do with fabrics and

clothing and it just made me want to do more in fashion

so its been a dream since I was around 4 and I’m now

in my 30’s and the dream still hasn’t faded but has now

become a reality.

Where did you study fashion design?I left school at 16 and went straight to Art college and

did my National Diploma in clothing and fashion and

then from there straight to Leeds University where I did

my degree in fashion and textiles.

What brought you to southern Ireland and how long have you lived here?If I’m honest a man… but I soon realised that there

was more to Ireland than a guy and found that weddings

were big here and so I started my bridal label Caroline

Atelier which is now finally growing from strength to

strength and then launched my fashion label Caroline

Matthews just a short year ago.

Do you find the wild Irish landscape an inspiration for your unique designs?Ireland has inspired my bridal wear…. I’ve done some

amazing shoots here in Ireland by the sea and in some

amazing locations, its just beautiful to see the scenery

around Ireland and the beaches in Kerry

Have you dressed any famous brides?I’m yet to dress a famous bride but I’m hoping one day

it will happen!

What is the next step for these designs and can we see CAROLINE MATTHEWS in any notable retailers soon?Next step for me is to have one good store here in

Ireland which I’m in talks with at the moment and then

a select few in the UK alongside one big retailers in the

UK. I have my heart set on a couple in the UK but they

are notoriously hard to get into so I will have to keep

plugging away at them! The US then is the market I

am looking forward to getting into, I know its a tough

market but I also know its a great market to be in so that

would be my dream along with Asia too

Is there any particular ladies you would like to see in your designs?

There are lots of women who I would love to see in our

pieces, I guess Roz Purcell here in Ireland would be one

of them, others would be Coco Rocha, Kristen Stewart

and Emma Stone. All confident women who love their

style.

And what about your wedding dresses. Is there any particular lady or ladies you would love to design a unique dress for and if so why?I would love to design a wedding dress for Emma Stone.

I love her style and thinks she mixes looks very well.

It must be difficult to work independently in the fashion industry. You have achieved so much on a limited budget. What is on your wishlist in order to take your designs a little further? It has been and still is very difficult to be an indepen-

dent designer, If I’d have known back then what I know

now I would have done things very differently but at the

same time I have learned valuable lessons and learned

from mistakes too so all of these have made me a better

person as well as a designer. I now finally feel confident

as a designer whereas I was always second guessing my

designs and there commerciality. The top of my wish

list would be a pot of gold to help me on my way….

finance was and will always be hard for a designer but

all it takes is one person wearing your pieces or being

spotted at the right time and then it all goes crazy!! Ive

learned to do what I can with what I have but of course

if someone were to turn round and offer me a bottom-

less pocket of money I wouldn’t say no!

Do you intend staying in Cork or is Caroline getting itchy feet?Caroline has always had itchy feet, I don’t remember

a time when I didn’t want to be somewhere. For me

though it doesn’t really matter where I am based now,

once our collections are readily available to customers

in boutiques or online then I can be anywhere. We have

now stopped seeing private bridal clients and just work

through our amazing stockists here in Ireland and the

UK so far which is making things easier for me to focus

on the design and building the brand for both labels… I

would like a house by the sea though, I love feeling the

sand between my toes and if that’s in Ireland then great

but I’m also open to moving too.

Any particular city hold an attraction for you and if so why?New York is at the top of my list right now…. for the

past 6 months i have a mood board that sits in my room

with image of New York and fashion alongside Italy.

I have been to New York before but only for a short

break and that was before i had the fashion line. I would

love to have stockists in the states especially New York

so my focus is on this right now and see how I go..

We hear you’re heading for New York very shortly... what’s the occasion and how did this come about?Yes I am very excited and nervous to be honest. I have

been chosen along with seven other designers ranging

from milliners, jewellery designers and fashion design-

ers to take part in the first fashion show at the Irish

Consulate over New York Fashion Week as part of Irish

Design 2015. Its a massive achievement for me and I re-

ally hope to come back with at least one NY stockists if

I can. The aim is to increase visibility for Irish fashion in

NY and I’ve been told there will be a number of fashion

editors, bloggers, buyers etc at the event which takes

place on 10th September so I’m really hoping that it will

be the start of something amazing! I also plan to bring

some of our bridal collection too to try and also meet

with some boutiques I have been in talks with

Thank you so muchThank you to everyone who supported my 4th Annual lunch for Crumlin Straight Ahead fund. As always we were lucky to get beautiful sunshine & wonderful guests that enjoyed every minute of the day. This year I had 181 guests at the lunch which

included our VIP guests & entertainment. It was great to have Gerald Kean & Lisa Murphy attend the lunch this year & they both bring such fun & glamour to a special event like this. Also I was thrilled that Deputy County Mayor Alan Coleman & Yvonne O Mahony were there to show their support. Plus so many new faces that included Manus & Betty O Callaghan, John X Miller & his wife Trish, & Michael Barry & his stunning daughter (thanks to Michael who kindly sponsored the Prosecco). This year I had to have the amazing Egle from White Cat Studio back to take all the social photographs at the annual red lunch as there’s nobody captures the essence of the day like Egle. Thanks to Lexus Cork and all my sponsors this year, your support is so appreciated. After the champagne & strawberries in the sun, guests were called to the Sherrard Suite for a beautiful 4 course lunch & entertainment from the amazing Majella Cullagh & fabulous Rebecca Storm. We then had the sweetest performance by Malika who sang “Over the rainbow” which brought out the tears in many of us!!! My children have a habit of making me cry:) For me personally I was so happy to have the team from Enable Ireland support the lunch this year as well as a few from the Straight ahead team based in Crumlin hospital. Dr Pat Kiely once again gave a moving speech & it reminded me of why I personally do this lunch every year.

I do it for children who sadly are left on hospital waiting lists for so long that their curvature of the spine is almost beyond repair, I do it for the parents who sadly watch their child deteriorate whilst waiting for surgery, & I do it simply because I am one of those mums who has watched two children go through surgery since the day they were born & I want to keep the wheel turning to ensure every child gets the surgery they need when they need it. My Annual Lunch “Ladies Wear Red for Straight Ahead” will be in it’s 5th year next year & to celebrate our equality laws I am renaming my event as “Cork wears Red for Straight Ahead”. Next year I will also be having a “Best dressed Gent in red” & my dear friend Michael Mulcahy would have won it outright this year!! Thanks to Michael & Jonathan and Hi magazine for their support again this year. There are far too many of you to thank individually for donating a prize, or drinks, or simply helping out on the day but you know who you are & on behalf of all the children Straight Ahead has helped & will help in the future I say “thank you” from them. Finally, another huge event will take place on the 27th August as my brave “little fighters” ‘Hassan & Hussein’ will proudly walk into big school! It will be an emotional day but a very happy day. Myself, Azzedine & the girls are so proud & we will look forward to sharing this massive milestone with you all. For every step they take as they walk into big school we dedicate each step to the many people who helped us get them there.

From the teams at the CUMH Cork, to Crumlin hospital, to Great Ormond street hospital London, Enable Ireland, & so many of you who prayed & supported us over the years.

Thank you all, love Angie and family xx

The summer’s evening was certainly in question as upon arrival at the impressive and spacious UCC Quad the heavens opened and the clouds applauded with a downpour worthy of an Oscar Winning perfect storm.

Hundreds of people ran for cover, while there was a near rampage for those trying to attain the free plastic rain covers being complimentary handed out by staff. I was not among the lucky few however and so had to make for the tissues, clean off my puddle filled VIP seat and settle down for the Movie themed concert ahead.

After almost a half hour delay due to the support act of the rain, the members of the Youth Orchestra filled the stage, their Conductor Thomas McCarthy raised the Baton and summer time was here again.Peter Corry appeared liked he literally jumped from the screen with his renditions of “Reviewing the Situation” from Oliver and I

can go the Distance from Disney’s Hercules carrying on to give powerful and riveting performances throughout the evening. West End and Celtic Woman Singer Alex Sharpe delivered with I dreamed a Dream and Nella Fantasia, while the Audience showed their rapturous appreciation for The Celtic Tenors as they delighted with previews of songs from their upcoming album “Timeless”. Musical Director and Special Guest Linda Kenny Joined the Celtic Tenors for the Penultimate numbers of the Prayer and You’ll Never Walk Alone in fine voice and style.

The after party allowed me to catch up with friends, Gerald Kean and Lisa Murphy, Gerald did his usual wonderful job of impeccable compare for the event.

A most enjoyable evening which even the rain couldn’t spoil.

I have a desperate sweet tooth, I feel one day I will wake up about 10 stone

heavier but I’ll worry about that day when it comes. One of my favourite snacks

are macarons, not the little coconut cookies but French pastel colour bites of pure

bliss, and there is only one place to get the best, macarons, Cloudberry Bakery,

the bakery itself is in Castlemaine Kerry, but the macarons are stocked exclusively

at David’s chocolatier in the English Market with flavours like salted whiskey

caramel, lemon or raspberry and white chocolate. You can’t go wrong, check out

my Instagram for more foodie bits @mahondaniel

It was a summer season of spectacular style and fashion with two of the biggest

equestrian events of the year behind us, The Galway races and The Dublin Horse

show, I had the pleasure of attending both. The Galway races draws people from

all over the country in particular for ladies day where hundreds of style obsessed

women descend upon Ballybritt Cork native Alex Butler from Bally Edmund

Middleton scooped the amazing prize. Wearing a one shoulder dress from Vanilla

in Fermoy and a Jennifer Wryne headpiece. The following Thursday was the Dublin

horse show hosted in the RDS Dublin anyone who wanted could enter for the best

dressed and each person was presented to the audience on stage with over 500

entrance on the day they managed to whittle it down to pick a very deserving best

dresses winner, designer Laura Jane Halton, who designed and made her outfit for

the day.

My autumn must have is definitely a nice knit jumper. These are a staple in

anyone’s wardrobe, with thick and heavy knits like Arran jumpers or lighter more

refined merino wool jumpers they provide a versatile addition to any outfit. Paired

with a crisp white shirt and chinos just on it’s own with a pair of jeans, it’s best to

have them in two or three colours, and they will bring you all the way into early

spring. My favourite colours are moss green, rusted orange or a nice dark grey.

The Men’s Editwith David Kelleher

This month we meet M&P the secretive team behind the new Styling phenom The Styling Irish

tell us about the styling irish, what is it all about and what lead you guys to start it?The Styling Irish are a new company based in beautiful Killarney in Co.Kerry.Our aim is to change the way the modern men shop for their accessories. Men’s fashion is changing yet the way men shop is not. Being the female half of The Styling Irish I find it quite difficult to find a gift for P and while trawling the internet for a gift for P’s birthday I noticed that there were lots of companies offering Male monthly subscription boxes yet none were in Ireland and if they shipped to Ireland it was quite expensive. With this in mind I spoke to P about it and he had mentioned he noticed the same and thus The Styling Irish was born,

What is in a typical styling box?A typical Styling Kit contains everything the modern man needs to complete his outfit. From the usual bits like bow ties, neck ties, lapel pins, pocket squares and tie bars. Each month there will be a “Feature Product” which can be previewed on our websiteTheStylingIrish.com and on our social media accounts. In the coming months our “Feature Products” will vary from Pocket Watches to a Cut Throat Razor and shaving kit.

you guys have already made it onto ryan tubirdy that’s a fantastic achievement for a new company how was it?It was fantastic. As you know we like to play out cards close to our chest here at The Styling Irish and not giving away our identity is a big part of that. I contacted Ryan Tubridy’s team and the lovely Audrey got in touch and it kinda went from there. Ryan was absolutely lovely as was Claire Deaveraux who appeared on the slot with us. I was looking after our Twitter outside the studio and it nearly exploded. P’s slot on Tubridy even caused our website to crash.Thankfully our website dev elopers The Brand Geeks were on hand to resolve the problem quickly. It has done wonders for our business we really own the team at Tubridy a lot for taking a chance on us.

Where can the boxes be bought? The Styling Kits can be bought on our website TheStylingIrish.com

What are the typical styling box costs? We offer 3 different Style Plans.

A one off Premium Style Kit which will contain 5 to 7 items one of which will be that months “Feature Product” will cost €39.99. The RRP for this is €110.00. This makes a great gift option too for anyone looking for something different.

A 3 month Style Subscription which will contain 3 to 5 items cone of which will be that months “Feature Product” will cost €34.99 per month.RRP €85.00

A 6 month Style Subscription which will contain 3 to 5 items cone of which will be that months “Feature Product” will cost €29.99 per month. RRP €85.00

These prices included postage and packaging and the Styling Kit will be delivered to the gentleman’s door the end of every month.

What’s next for the styling irish? We want to take The Styling Irish to the next level and have it international. We have been lucky to have gained a big following from the GAA & TV world with Kerry Footballers Darran O Sullivan & Marc O Se both sporting items from or Styling kits as well as Kilkenny Hurler Jackie Tyrell and 3e Weatherman Deric Hartigan,

M is currently hard at work developing a Ladies Styling Kit which we hope to have in time for Christmas. She has been working with some well know Irish bloggers such as Lisa Jordan of Just Jordan and her support has been fantastic.

Product of the Month:bulldog skincare for Men

It’s my party & I’ll dump who I want to!The last episode of Sex and the City aired in 2004. That’s over ten years ago. I was a huge fan of the show. Recently I went back to watch it from the very start and it makes me laugh now more than ever. As I get older I appreciate the comedic nature of it even more and I can relate to many of the relationship dilemmas and storylines. I’ve been Carrie, I’ve been Miranda, I’ve been Charlotte and I hastily admit it I’ve been Samantha! I can personally identify with them all. I noted one episode though where I’ve been pondering if I did take example from a story in the series would it work here in cork? Even in Ireland? It was season one, episode where Charlotte held a party where each friend had to bring a man they were NOT interested in. Forget Tinder, Plenty of Fish or any other dating App. I’ve a feeling with the right people behind it a party like this could really take off. Ok so being asked out by someone with the reason being you’ve no interest in you anymore may be hard to accept, but I genuinely think once you get over that hurdle it has the makings of a “fabulous” night!

This month Marie contacted The Opinion Line as she believed that the bigger the bitch a woman is, the more men they attract. I had to agree with her somewhat. From what I have found playing the dating game, healthy, stable men will date the “bitchy” woman for a bit, either because the woman is hot or she’s good in bed. Or both. But they won’t date them for long or marry them. That is, unless those men enjoy being bossed around, henpecked and generally enjoy being emasculated. Yes, in many cases, it is the woman’s looks that keeps these low self-esteemed men around. Being with a “hot” woman gives them a sense of social proof. But looks don’t last forever. Do men love women who know what they want and go after it and speak their mind? Yes. Absolutely. But if she doesn’t posses both vulnerability and consistency, he’s out. Inconsistency leads to unpredictability, and unpredictability leads to drama. So, if a woman is laidback and easygoing the first few weeks of dating, and then becomes demanding and rigid, what a man sees is inconsistency. This is not good. Men hate drama. You’ve heard that nice guys finish last, but what about nice girls? I’ve just started reading Why Men Marry Bitches by author Sherry Argov who reveals why men actually prefer a confident, secure woman (Argov’s definition of the word bitch) to one who lets her man take the reins in a relationship. She surveyed real men, who spilled exactly what makes or breaks their opinion of the women they meet -- and it turns out that having your own life, making your own plans and not letting him win all the time only makes you more attractive. So who says being a “bitch” is a bad thing? Not these guys! It’s well worth the read.

Do men really like bitchy women?

A nickname is often considered desirable, symbolising a form of acceptance, but can sometimes be a form of ridicule. I met a guy called Donal at my friends wedding last month who had the nickname “Schoolbag” - when I asked why was he called School Bag - they told me that he was at an Eminem concert a few years ago and someone called him a “scumbag” - Donal replied “Hi - who are you calling a SCUMBAG?” I hoped to find the funniest nickname in Cork on the show after I heard this story and the listeners definitely delivered. Here are a few examples: (by the way there are some I don’t even get!)“The Olympic Torch” for the fellow who never goes out and “The Pothole” for the guy who everyone tries to avoid. “Deadliest Catch” because he stumbles around the local like a fella on a trawler in rough seas.A guy called Mike called the show and told me “Tea and toast was a friends nickname because every time we called for him he would be out after his tea and toast or if we were out he would say I’m going in for a cup of tea and toast!”A guy called Greg then text the show saying “I was a panel beater for 45 years and they nicknamed me hammer because i was always banging!” And the best of the lot had to be when Sally called the show and told PJ “my mum and my elderly aunt when talking about where they worked long ago would nearly always refer to people by their nicknames. There was ‘balls of sweat’, rhubarb, custard and badger!” Oh goodness, I’d love to have worked there.I used call my neighbour “Keyhole Kate” because she was nosey!

Nicknames

TanoraTanora is “A Cork Legend. It’s An Irish tradition. A Cork tradition”. This is what a man called John on the 208 bus told me recently who knew me to see me. He asked me did I have any idea why Tanora wasn’t more widely distributed as it tastes so good and said it should be better marketed to a wider audience. I got digging and I found that there was a determined campaign by the Tanora faithful, which included a Facebook petition, which ensured the future of the drink which had become as synonymous with Cork as the Shandon Bells, Beamish, Murphys and tripe and drisheen. The brand’s heritage is rooted in Cork having been initially introduced to Cork City by John Daly & Co in the 1930s and it continues to be a much-loved drink across the Munster region. When I contacted Tanora HQ for the gentleman I met on the bus I asked them why Tanora isn’t widely distributed throughout Ireland and why it’s not marketed abroad at all? They told me “Tanora is a listed product, available to all retailers nationwide and it can be found in larger stores across the country. However demand for the product remains greatest across the Munster region and retailers are more likely to stock the product due to the loyal customer base in those areas.” Unfortunately there are no specific marketing campaigns planned for Tanora at present, but they promised me they were committed to continuing the availability of the product throughout the marketplace. So lucky for all you Hi Magazine readers you can go and enjoy a bottle now. John told me ‘Tanora is part of Cork” and he described it as a “uniquely Cork” product. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a man have so much passion for a fizzy drink! John for Taoiseach.

amazing opportunity and you’re not sure you can do it, say yes - then learn how

to do it later.”

I had heard so much about the range of beauty services provided by Sandra Barry of Rejuvenate Glanmire, often thought I’d like to try one or the other. When I finally got around to a consultation I was more than impressed.

Sandra took so much time to talk through the variety of treatments from non-invasive to botox. However, much as I may need the later I decided to book in for a Meso. This treatment was incredible.

Meso Vytal Micro Lifting, is a digital needling treatment.A specially formulated needle head that delivers cell boosting vitamins, amino acids, and hyaluronic acids directly into the skin..boosting snake venom to the frown/eye and lip area a highly effective anti aging formula directly

to the problem area where needed most. This amazing treatment plumps, hydrates, rejuvenate, and revitalises the skin. This treatment is advised in a trio to gain maximum effect and you can also purchase great after care face creams. I have already booked in for my second treatment as many people have commented on the difference in my skin and I too feel the freshness that wasn’t there before.

Sandra also has the agency for IMAGE Skincare who have the appropriate slogan ‘Age Later’... I’m in for that!

The angelic air of calmness and confidence in Rejuvenate Glanmire is both reassuring and revitalising from start to finish. I can highly recommend a visit to Rejuvenate and for me Meso is top of the list.

traveldiary

My family and I are very last minute but when I was considering something

to do and somewhere to go for an overnight I decided to incorporate a trip to IKEA in Dublin as we had a list of things that were needed for both home and the coffee shop. I had heard about TAYTO PARK and thought this might suit Isabelle (17) and Josh (10) so I went online and booked the nearest hotel which in our case was the ‘Pillo’ in Ash-bourne and off we went. The afternoon in Ikea was the usual pleasur-able experience for us, especially when you go to pay and see how reasonable the bill is. We headed for Ashbourne right after and were surprised at how smooth the journey was and we managed to find our destination without a hitch. The hotel was perfect and totally geared around families and people go-ing to Tayto Park. They have a great swim-ming pool (open to kids until 7pm) and for dinner you can opt for a buffet or bar food. They line up evening entertainment every day and if was movie night on our night so Josh was happy. The next morning we got up early, had a swim and headed for Tayto Park right after breakfast. The park is only about a 5 minute drive from the hotel. There is plenty of parking and guides direct you into a parking place (just try and remember which row you parked in). The whole park has a wood theme and rural setting. Even though it was busy on the Wednesday we visited there is a sense of calmness throughout and the staff are incred-ibly friendly. It definitely reminded me of my Euro Disney experience as everywhere I went the various staff members would ask ‘Are you having a nice day?’ and Tayto Park team members have adapted the same policy. I like this as it does reinforce ‘yes I am hav-ing a nice day’.

There are plenty of playground areas and outdoor activities for younger kids without opting for the more adventurous zip wire, roller coaster, air race and rotator. I decided I’d try a couple of these with my daughter Isabelle. An English visitor did warn me that the roller coaster was the fastest and best he had ever experienced, and it was! All I can say it ‘Oh my God’ and the photo taken during the ride wasn’t one we’d put on our mantle piece! I also let Isabelle persuade me to go on the ‘rotator’ and so many people, like my daughter, loved it but I came off feel-ing a little disturbed. I think it was the fact that it rotated fully and we were suspended upside down that affected me most! So I let my husband Ollie accompany Isabelle for the rest of the afternoon while I went to the 5D cinema and calmer options with Josh. We walked through the dinosaur parked, visited the Tayto factory, saw the va-riety of animals from tigers to eagles and we all enjoyed a giant ‘Twisted Chip’ which was a drilled potato on a stick flavoured either in salt and vinegar or cheese and onion as well as a pizza stop when the rain came down, as it does! All in all it was a great family day. The train driver told us that the owner Mr Murphy has great plans for further development of the park and he also intends to keep it open all year round. It’s great to see this development in our country and only encourages addi-tional tourists together with providing a great family attraction for all us locals. You pay to get in at the main reception and then you have the option of purchasing a wrist band at the additional cost of €15 each. This is for the more adventurous rides so not needed for smaller children. I would absolutely recommend and will return to see future progress.
