I enter the art room. My eyes wander along the walls, notice the familiar paint tubes, brushes, pallets, stacks of water-colour paper, ink bottles splashed with drops of black ink. I am intensely aware of excitement rising up in me, my hands longing to touch, to take, to do, to make…A smile starts in the corner of my mouth and splashes all over my face. I feel alive. I feel deep, joyful, secure. I know where I am. I know who I am. I know what I can…I am….I am Free….to express all inside of me. No fear of judgement. No fear of ridicule. No fear. Joy. I am Bold….I know I can. I know I may. And therefore I will. I will dare. I will dream. I will do.I am Wise…every challenge an avenue

for a solution.I am Willing…I will surrender to possibili-ties. I will grow.I am Able….I can communicate, share messages words cannot convey. Lan-guage does not define the limits of my thinking. I can say what cannot be said.I am Real…images in my mind becomes real, is expressed for others to view. I exist. I create.

Like Felix Torres I can say….Above all else

It is about leaving a mark that I existed: I was here.

I was happy. I was sad.I was in love. I was afraid.

I was hopeful.I had an idea and I had a good purpose

That’s why I made works of art

A TART WITH A DIFFERENCE!Beetroot tart with baby rocket (serves 4)This is such a simple tart, yet it always gets a “wow” from my guests because it looks so beautiful on a plate. If beetroot is not your favourite, use grilled tomatoes and basil.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:1 sheet ready-made puff pastry, 1 egg, beaten

Topping1 cup cream cheese½ cup heavy creamjuice of one lemon4 large cooked beetroots, thinly sliced and patted dry

Salad¼ cup olive oil½ tablespoon lemon juicesalt and pepper2 cups baby rocket¼ cup Parmesan shavings

WHAT TO DO:Preheat the oven to 200◦C. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and then roll out the puff pastry until it is 4mm thick. Cut out four discs with an 11.5cm round pastry cutter. Using a sharp knife, lightly score around the pastry discs 1cm from the edge, taking care not to cut through the pastry. Brush the edges with the beaten egg and place the pastry discs on to a non-stick baking sheet. Poke a few holes in the pastry and place in the oven on the middle shelf. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden. Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool.

ToppingBlend the cream cheese, cream and lemon juice together. Spread over the base of the cooled tart shells. Arrange the beetroot slices on top of the cheese mixture. Be sure that the beetroot slices are relatively dry so the pink juice does not run on to the white cream.

SaladWhisk the olive oil and lemon juice together in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Pour this vinaigrette over the baby rocket and toss. To serve, place individual tarts on plates and top with rocket and Parmesan shavings.

Baie geluk dogters. Netbal vat vlam by Lochies!

Vanjaar was OMGEE-WEEK vanaf 4-8 Augustus.

This year WE CARE WEEK took place from 4-8 August. The aim was to make our learners aware of the needs of others and to reach out with love and compassion to those around us. Each grade concentrated on a specific theme

and necessities were collected to donate to these organisations.

National Institute for the Deaf provides education, occupational- and ministry care to people with hearing loss. By supporting NID you can powerfully change the lives of deaf people and those who are affected by hearing loss.

De Hoop Gee Om/De Hoop Cares

Sharing is caring. Ruby Cilliers, grade 1E1, is very pleased with her chocablock money box. Each learner received a money box to collect small change in. This De Hoop ‘We care’ project is in aid of The Institute for the Deaf.

Mnr.

Give a dog a bone! Gr 5A3 contributes more than a bone. The organisation PETS will benefit immensely from the pet food contributions of these grade 5 learners.

Courage grows when we dare, Unity grows when we cheer, Love grows when we

share, and relationship grows when we care!

Somerset College

The Archbishop Emeritus Tutu visited Somerset College last week as the guest speaker at the annual David Wynne Lecture. (Mr Wynne was the founding headmaster of Somerset College.) Tutu addressed the Senior School students who he referred to as South Africa’s “Born Free” generation. The “Born Frees” were born after the country’s first fully democratic elections in 1994 and have grown up without apartheid. Tutu spoke about the conflict in Gaza; South Africa’s transition to

democracy; Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment; human beings being defined by other fellow human beings; and he spoke about Ubuntu. Put simply; Tutu said “we need each other to be human; for togetherness”. “Ubuntu fosters forgiveness, compassion and magnanimity, which are like oxygen for the human soul,” commented The Archbishop. Tutu’s address was uplifting, thought provoking and humorous. “Looking around me here

today gives me great hope for this country,” Tutu told the students. “Go out and make a difference to God’s world!” Tutu left the school chapel to a standing ovation. It was indeed a privilege to have this Nobel Peace Prize Winner, social rights activist and retired Anglican Archbishop address Somerset College students.

Grand Master Gata Kamsky gets taken down!

The big news for the round was the impressive comeback from Paul Roos Gymnasium Old Boy Henry Steele. Kamsky had the pressure but Henry acted like the ‘man van staal’ and withstood the pressure. Once he did that, he showed superlative technique to bring the full point home. We played from 2pm until 7:30pm and Henry showed supreme concentration to

bring home the point. Grand Master Kamsky is a former world champion candidate having contested the world championship title in 1996 in Elista. Known to all as a tough nut to crack, Henry showed that Africa has the players to beat the top players in the world.Well done, Henry! Gary Kasparov came around more than once and pulled some

faces when he saw the position of Kamsky. We all smiled as we understood that Kamsky was embarrassed! Henry, however, took everything in his stride! Let’s celebrate the fine victory by Henry Steel! Viva Henry viva!

The “Back to School” karaoke night at Hottentots-Holland High School took the guests down memory lane! Sherrol and Cornell were dressed in school uniform.

Hottentots-Holland High School has qualified for the Artscape High School Drama Festival. Under the direction of the English teacher, Darryl Spijkers, the two workshopped plays will be showcased on 12 August at 18:00 at the Artscape Arena. The two plays have been created under the theme of democracy and will enjoy a further run

at the HHHArts Festival from 19 – 22 August. “It is the first time that HHH has participated and, from over 40 schools, we are glad to have made the top 16! There is so much talent to be found at our local schools. The learners are truly inspiring” says Spijkers. Victoria and Alfred’s Last Day is a slice of life of two hobos living on Church Street in Cape Town. Set in 1994 and written for the High School Artscape Drama Festival under the theme of ‘Democracy’, this

play is filled with pathos and smiles, memories and love. Natalie and Jimmy are on their way to vote in the first democratic election but wake up to see an audience before them. They go on to tell their stories and reveal some deeper secrets. As the play ends we are left with a performance that will linger long after the lights have faded. The Mandela Girls is a topical gripping thriller. When Nelson Mandela was released from jail in 1990, the menial lives of four maids working on a remote farm in the Cape Province change forever. Entangled in a messy crime, the untold story of those women is retold and redemption prevails. Tickets are R40 and can be booked through Computicket.

gaan lê of moed opgegee nie.

Estelle placed third in her category in this year’s Chaeli Campaign Art and Poetry competition. She was invited to attend a workshop given by a recognized South African poet where she had the chance to enhance and develop her poetic skills.

On Wednesday 6th August, about 15 Interact Society members and other girls assisted Rotary Club of Stellenbosch to organize and label toys to be distributed around the Boland area to underprivileged children. The girls spent the afternoon sorting toys into bags that will make their way to many children to assist in their early childhood development.

Rhenish Learner Council hosted their annual talent competition on 30 July. Superstars is a highly anticipated event on the school calendar where the girls have the opportunity to share their talents with the very appreciative audience. The acts range from standup comedy, to dance, to musical items to singing. Proceeds from the evening are donated to the Safe House in Stellenbosch. The winners this year were Daniella Teixeira (1st), Tess de Waal (2nd) and Sharon Matholi (3rd).

“For the rhythm of life is a powerful beat,Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet!Rhythm on the inside, rhythm on the street,For the rhythm of life is a powerful beat.”

Final rehearsals are underway for the musical extravaganza, “Rhythm of Life”, proudly presented by the Music Department of Rhenish Girls’ High on Tuesday 12 August and Wednesday 13 August. The Revue showcases the Rhenish choirs (Junior and Senior), solo artists and the orchestra, sharing the amazing talent and variety of the rhythm of life.

Michelle, along with 27 Rhenish learners participated in the National English Olympiad. Michelle, a Grade 10 learner, was placed 27th in South Africa in this examination and has won a scholarship for a first year at Rhodes University. Rhenishers achieved 3 Golds, 14 Silver, 5 Bronze and 4 Merits in the Olympiad.

Two of Rhenish’s top tennis players participated in tennis tournaments around the country during the recent school holidays. Cindy Dorrington (Grade 10) participated in the women’s open in Gauteng East and Gauteng Central and qualified for the (International Tennis Federation) ITF tournament in Wanderers. Megan Lombardi (Grade 8) had excellent results in the U14 age group. She made the Final in Kwazulu Natal and finish 3rd both in Gauteng East and Gauteng Central. Both girls are improving their ranking. Cindy is currently a top 20 player in the U16 age group and Megan a top 10 player in the U14 age group.
