DIRECTORS' REPORT

Felfrpw Members:

We have pleasure m mbmitting for your consideradon and approval the Directors' Report, Balance Sheet ~Accounts for the Half-year ended March 24th, 1956.

1. Sales.—We had hoped that the sahu for the Half year would have amounted to 82 $ millions but, unforbmateiy

we just faged to reach this Syuu by the small amount of 89,300. The cash sales for the Half-year amounted to 82,490,726

being an increase of f213/12 or 9.4 per cent. It seems fairly certain that by next Half-year the sales will have reached

65 millions per annum and we~ask all members to make the forthcoming Half-year a record one as far m saba

are concerned. Lincoln Society is now about the 20th largest trading Society in the country. In spite of the popuhtion

of Lincoln and its sunuunding area being smail in comparison with many other towns, we feel that the purchases per

member which amount to KI. 18s. I+xL per week are exceptionally gratifyiing. We u ill continue our search for further

Cooperative trade snd we intend as far as possible to keep our position in the C~perative Movement.

2. Dividend. —The Board ofDirectors mcommend a dividend of ls. 4d. in the 8, being the same rate as last Half-year.You wiB no doubt remember that a year ago we reported that the average dividend of tbe country was is. 03d. Followhrgthe publication of the September, 1955 Report, we received a letter from the Co-operative Union congratulating us onour sales anil dividend and pointing out that the average dividend of the country was not ls. Ofd. , but ls. Okd. Fxpenses

and in ihe very near futme yaur Society wig be faced with increased rates which amount to quite a con-siderable sum and also

'sum and also~charges for coal, lighting, transport, and all the other expenses incurred m runmng a

business. Your Directorsexpenditure.

ur Directors wig do their utmost to try and maintain the dividend at ls. 4d. in spite of other increasing

3. Membershi .—As is~ p —s is our, custom, we go through the ledgers every few years and write olf any member who is~g where there b onb perhaps a shilling or a small amount left in the account. This is transferred totbe Unclaimed Share Balance Account so that it is available for anyone coming along at a later date asking «r ~capital. Tbe Membership this Half-year amounts to 49,872, being an increase of 257 for the Quarter.

4. Obitaary. —Less than a earand we would like to ress

a year after tus retiremenL Mr. A. Doncaster, the former Works Manager

forward so much to bis etirement that itexpress our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Doncaster and her famil . Mr. Do~a er y.

t it msms a great tragedy that he should have been taken away so ~o so 'ttle time to enjoy his well~rued hdsure.

(b) Central Premises. As it is now two years since we started ne otiations with thnego 'ations wi the Council on the re-buddmg of

o seem to g much progress, it has been decided to take the case to Appeal as

~~should take place in Lincoln in the very near future, but we think it would be

advisable not to print or state too much on this subject since th h le t will bce w o matter wfil bc settled before a Government

(c) De Wint Avenue. Our Works Department are making good progress with the building of thc new premises on

De Wint Avenue. It is too early as yet to give a definite time for opening but we are hopeful that the sho will be read

for opening within the next six months.

6. Members' Oubng. —Unfortunately, the number of people who have booked up for the Mcmbcrs' Outing to

Edinburgh has fallen considerably short of the guaranteed number and unless there is a considerable improvement

within the next few weeks, it wfii be necessary for the outing to be cancelled. It seems unfortunate but urdcss we can

' guarantee a minimum of 200 the outing cannot take place and to date the number of people who have booked is con-

siderably less than I00.

7. Government Credit Squeeze. —The Government credit squeeze bas meant a considerable tightening up of Hire

Purchase restrictions, especially in the Electrical Department. We can still ofi'er our members the same Hire Purchase

terms as our competitors and we would also once again like to draw the attention of the members to the 38-week Credit

Scheme. It seems fairly certain that there wiB be no easing of the present Hire Purchase restrictions in the forthcoming

Budget but as we have the same facilities available for our members as any other firm we do ask you to get your

Electrical requirements from your own Society. Washing Machines, Telmrision, Wireless, Refrigerators, gtc. , in a variety

of makes are available for cash, as a 38-week credit sale or on Hire Purchase.

8. Mrs. Ricbardtc —The Board of Directors would like to draw the members' attention to the excellent work that

Mrs Richards has carried out on behalf of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Chfidren. For a number

of years Mrs. Richards has served on this Committee and has collected a considerable sum of money for the help of this

worthy cause. She has now intimated that she is resigning and we would like to record our fufi appreciation of hcr work

on behalf of the Society while serving on this organisation.

9. Death Benefit Scheme.—We would once again draw our members' attention to the free Death Benciit Scheme

for all members. During the prment Half-year the Society paid f4,620 in Death Benefit claims. The staff in the General

Office are at your service to deal with any member or the widow of any member who may suffer a bereavement.

Yours faithfully, for and on behalf of thc Directors,

D. M. DIXON, President.

DUNCAN McNAB, J.P., A.A.C.C.A.,Managing Secretary.

Conferences and Day Schools.—Two conferences and one day school are sch d led k 1 d

sc e u to ta e p ace uring this winter, as follows:

Missing Link."Fri y, 23rd November, at 7 p.m. Speaker: Mr. Percy D. Brown, General Mana er of the De b P'

for his thought-provoking book" Naught for Your Comfort,"which deals most strongly with the ofssrzbeidf policy in the Johannes-

burg district of Sosth Africa.

Education Handbook. —Many tributes were paid at the Members' Branch Meetings and through the Worncn's Cooperative

Guilds to tbe use('ulness of this booklet. A new edition for Session 1956/57 was published at tbc beginning of Scptcrnber. We

believe that all new members should have a copy sent to them immediately they join the society, and arrangemcnts have been

made with the General Office for this to be done.

Guild Events. —The Fourth Annual Public Speaking Contest will be held on Wednesday, 24th October, and a further reference

will be made to this event in our next report.

The Seventh Annual Drama Festival has been arranged on 2nd and 3rd April, in the New Coespcmtive Haik Mr. G. Mostyn

Lewis, County Drama Organiser of Lindsey Education Committee, has been appointed adjudicator.

Junior Festival, 1956.—Due to an increase in the number of entries in the music classes, it has been ~to allot an extra

session. A total of 156have entered: 117 in the music classes, and 39 in the speech classes, which is an increase of 11 over last year.

The festivtd will be held in Newport Codoperative Hall, on Saturday, 3rd November (morning and afternoon sessions), Friday,

9th November (evening) and Saturday, 10th November (morning, afternoon and evening).

Lgsmry. —For a considerable period the rising cost of books has caused great concern to the Library Subcommittee. Since

1950 the cost has gone uP by 75 Per cent, which means, in tgfect, that where in 1950 we got rather kus than three books for fly

do not even get two noviadays. After a Iongsutdcareful review of this position, it bas been decided by the Education Committee

from 1st January, 1957,.the charge for tbe loan of books to 2d. pcr book for thc first 14 days; other cbargss to remain

j'lvious1y. We would tike to see snore new. editions being placed on the shelves of our library. It has, therefore, been agreed

g. t all increased revenue from this source be spent on the supply of new bo'oks at monthly htccvabX

'J- propaganda Fibn Shaws. —Fifteen shows are being arranged during the winter and these will be adverdsed lordly in our shopss

as well as in the "Home Magaiinc,"'about a month tie(or to the event tatdng place. AII shows wifi bc free and special invitation

tickets' distributed through our branch shops.~Movement. —We hope in the near future to form a Cthopcrutive Pathfinder Group in Lincoln, probably on the Ermine

.e and, perhaps later, one at Swanpool. These groups cater for children aged eleven to fourteen years.
