DIRECTORS' REPORTTo the Members,

Coal.—House coal supplies at the depots are still rather erratic and it is diff!cult to arrange deliveries as we should like owingto the irregular arrival of the various qualities. There is no laclr of orders, aud careful regulation is necessary to ensure that eachmember receives their quota. With this in mind we have 6xed a quarter of e ton as the maximum amount to be ordered at onetime. Members may follow on with further orders until the amount for the period hes been taken. There hes been no relaxation.in our efforts to give members the full permitted quantities, although we are short of staff, and sidutess has be'en prevalent. Underthe prevailing conditions we cannot guarantee prompt delivery but have been able to meet nfl the demands of onr membegs whohave received their full permitted quantities in each restricuon pbfiod. Members are advised ta place orders regulady' wbenmmrthey receive delivery of previous order. Deliveries will continue to be made in strict rotation as far as the smval of tbe.variousqualities permit. A word or two about open. cast coal. Whilst there is a certain amount of prejudice against this dans af seal weregret we have no option but to take a percentage as part of our allocated tonnage, 'which we endeavaur to dtstribute as faidy as

wfr

passible. This is not a diff'musty peculiar to the Cmaperative Society only, as afhimuchtints have to take their share ofopen-cast coaL. Milk—The milk mgistrations of tfm Society have now reached thi number 'af 54,70IL an'd this is most gratifying. Due loGovenunent policy of ensuring adequate supplies of milk to H.hit Forces the supply to customers has been cut from 3 to 2$ pints

EDUCATIONAL COMMITTEE'S REPORT.f

Felloro-Co-operators,

Your Committee has pleasure in submitting its Report of activities during &he past six months

Once again the Education Committee has proved a stepping stone to higher service in the Co-operativeMovement, and we tender to Mrs. Richards our sincere'congratulations on her election to the Board ofDirectors and wish her long and successful service.

As mentioned in our last Report we were endeavouring to arrange Lectures on matters vital to thecommunity. The Social Security League has offered as a speaker Mr. J. Snoxhill, of Dudley, who willaddress a Weekend School at Wesley Schoolroom, on Saturday, 29th April, 1944, in the afternoon at? 30.

Subject: "THE URGENCY OF THE BEVERIDGE PLAN."

In the evening, at 6 o'dock.

Subject:"THE COST OF RECONSTRUCTION. "'

We give a cordial invitation to any member& to attend

Centenary Celebrations. —At the invitation of the Board we have elected representatives on theCentenary Celebrations Committee, and we appeal to all co-operators to give every support possible tothe Centenary Pageant. Many workers are needed to make it a success. Give in your name to Miss C.Hayden, Pageant Mistress.

Library. —Steady advance in membership of this section still continues, and we have again added aconsiderable quantity of new Books to meet the ever-increasing demand.

Choir. —An invitation has been extended to our Choir to lead the singing at the Service in the Cathedral;on Sunday, 2nd July, 1944, the opening of the Pageant Week. Requests are aheo constantly being received

p for their services and, where possible, granted.

The Education Committee, along with the Socie'ty, are faced with the possibility of tbe Ministry of'Works taking over our premises. If this should happen it may'mean a serious ~nt of our work, particularly the Library and Billiard HaIl.

Every endeavour will be stsade to epsure a continuity of service to our memlmrs, but we appeal for your':"-";-:;:.: =-':i.~,if arid whee these changes' tike place.

The Youth Work under the guidance of the Youth Executive, still continues to give satisfaction; readers $of the 8'heatsheaf will have read of the outstanding accomplishments. We do, however, congratulate the:-—-e.v Drama Section on reaching the final of the Co-operative Midland Drama Competition, and wish them4;&.„--

DIRECTORS' REPORTTo the Members,

(a) Election of Directors. —Voting at country branches where quarterly meetings are usually held, wiHbe from I p.m. to the closing of the branch. For voting arrangements in the City see page 2. The resul'taf the election will be published in the local press on Tuesday, 8th February, and formally dedar'ed at theFinal Meeting on Saturday, 12th February. '

(b) Potatoes and Seeds.—Scotch seed potatoes are now on sale at aH grocery branches and the fruitshop, Free School Lane. Members are strongly recommended to purchase their requirements as soon aspossible, particularly the early varieties. Our list includes Sharpes Express, Duke of York, Arran Pilot,Edipse, Arran Banner, Great Scot, Majestic, and Dunbar Standard. We can Slso supply from stock, NationalGrowmpre Fertiliser at fixed prices, and Co-Hop manure. We expect to have garden seeds on sale in earlyFebruary.

(c) Russia and China. —Twelve months ago members approved our recommendation of sending dividend

I(f;-

accruing in Share No. 9001 in the proportion of two-thir'ds to Russia and one-third to China. It is pleasing'

to report that we were able to, send the sum of fn666 to Russia and X333 to China after our half year endedoctober last, making the totals aHocated to date: Russia, dn2, 602, and China, f567. Best thanks are due. to 'members and friends who have thus supporter} our gallant aHies by allocating the amount of purchaseta Share No. 9001.(d) Staff.—Withdrawal of employees for National Service continues, with the result that service to ourmembers is being still further impaired. The ever-increasing burden placed upon the remaining staff caHs'for great' tolerance and aH possible encouragement tn their effarts to cape with the demands made upon 'them

by. the variaus Ministries as well as' the needs af the meinbers. ''Every possible effort is being made by the"-, . tttpp'awrttetd Sub-Committee through our Mr. F. Grainger, to maintain the best possible service, and render";;.-:;,:,'„. .",etvg3'i passible assistanc'e to those who'are'caHed, both by n'egotiation with the Ministries concerned and h'elp '""+'«''i'~:tjai'dance during their absence. In these'circtnrtstances member~ are caHed upon to indulge, as far as. '~~~-;jiteiabfet in the apparent short-c'omings of service, and make appraaches af toleration to the already'harassetl

=""'g;:-',,-'ttv','.."(g);-Directors' Retirement. —The past. custom of~ a presentation to retiring dire'ctors hag nowprovsed quite inadequate. We now therefore recommend th'at the value of siich present be at the rate off(l for each year of oflice.
