7. Any other bustness.

To the Members. DIRECTORS' REPORT.

(rt) We beg to submit to you the Quarterly Report and Cash Account. The total amount received

for goods sold during the efuarter is R308,540 Os. I~., being an increase of %22,674 ls. 4d. compared

with the corresponding period last year. 602 persons hav'e joined the Society within .the rfuarter,

595 have withdrawn, and'20 forfeited as per rule, making the present number 30,597.

We recommend an interim discount of ls. 5d. in the R on members' purchases for the past

«fuartet.

(b) Bread Slicing and Wrapping. —New machinery for slicing and wrapping bread has been installed

in the, Bakery Department. This new innovation will be appreciated by the members, who may now obtain

their bread manufactured and dehvered under most hygienic conditions.

.{c)Butchery. —For tha conventence of members in Bracebridge Heath and District, a butcher's shop

;has be'en opehed on the Grantham Road. We desit'e to thank members in this area for their Ioyal patronage

of the travelli'ng butcher's shop, which will now be able to serve members further afield.

(ro Chrisbnas Trade. —Notwithstanding the dfect of the blackout on shopping facilities„ it is pleasing

to note that' sales show an increase of III,154 during Christmas week when compared with the corresponding

'week of fast year.

(e) Dairy Extensions. —The work' is proceeding very satisfactorily, and is now nearing completion.

The task of conversion is, indeed, a formidable one, as the Dairy must be kept in full commission throughout

the period. The s'plendid service of the Graham Enock Manufacturing Company and our own Works

Department, however, is in process of providing the Society with one of the best Model Dairies in the country.' When completed every opportunity for inspection by those interested will be made by the Department.

4

(f) 034.M.S.—There are now 74 employees serving in H.M. Forces, and seven on full-time A.R.P. duties.

.~j" (g) Quarterly Meetings. —Caving to better travelling facilities being now available, it has been decided

~l-'.sto revert to the holding of country branch quarterly meetings on Fridays and Saturdays. Voting at these"' 'branches will commence at I p.m. and continue till the close of meeting. WILL MEMBERS PLEASE

To the Mcmhers. DIRECTORS' REPORT.

(a) We beg to submit to you the 157th Half-Yearly Report and Balance Sheet. The total amountreceived for goods sold during the half year is f606,183 17s. 0)d., being an increase of f39,460 16s. 5'.compaied with the corresponding period last year.

I

The net surplus on the half year's business, after. allowing for all expenses, depreciation, and interest, amounts to 247,912 16s. 1Id., and after deducting the payments as per Surplus and Deficit Account, leaves

! ~ balance of 123,842 10s. 10d., which we propose to dispose of as follows: —222,666 13s. 4d. as discount onMembers' Purchases at ls. 5d. in the ft„ f382 4s. 9d. for Educational purposes, and R793 12s. 9d. carriedforward to next half year. 1,055 persons have joined the Society within the half year, 1,034 have withdrawn, and 52 forfeited as per Rule, making the pres'ent number 30,579.

fh) Boot Department. —New machinery has recently been installed in tbe Boot Repairing Factory forcementing ladies' shoes. This is an entirely new process for repairing light shoes, which eliminates the useof rivets and thus the original flexibiTity of the shoes is retained. It is hoped that members will take fulladvantage of this greatly improved service.

(c) Cafe.—Recent renovations in the Cafe are being greatly appreciated by patrons and staff. Shoppingexpeditions are rendered much less tiring by morning coffee or afternoon tea. The Cafe ts now proving avahmble alternative to the New Co-operative Hafl, now occupied by HM Forces. We commend the.first~ services of this department to parties needing catering of any kind.

(tf) Dairy. —In view of the need to maintain our plant and equipment to meet the ever-increasing demure"'l':i', ;".'of members, the Dairy Department has been extended and new machinery installed, the old plant having

served its purpose and become obsolete. Before our next Report, it is hoped to have the entire plant working,

1 pr ~~wing to the war the question of the provision of new central premises

has had to be shelved for an indefinite period. Other extensions and alterations have likewise had to

postponed owing to t e ac o uit th I k f building material and the reduction of staffs in all departments. Every effort

is, however, being ma e o main ambe' d to maintain all our services. and no opportunity of possible extension or bringing

up to date is being missed.

g R tration. —Vanous effects have been expenenced m connection with trade. First, there wasg egis ra on.—anous e

a stimulation of business in certain departments and a further increase in the cash trade (as compared with

the volume of business) owing to rising prices. Subsequently, rationing was introduced in respect of sugar,

butter, and bacon; meat was rationed as from 11th March. Rationing has, naturally, reduced the volume

o usmess ca sef business because of the scarcity of commodities and limitation of each customer's purchases. Difficulties

of supply have had a similar effect in connection with other commodities not rationed. Although our cash

sales show such a large increase, the amount would have been even greater had the whole of the members ~registered with the Society. This opportunity is taken to thank those members who have registered with us,

and a further appeal is now made to those who have not done so to transfer their trade to their owii Society

at the first available opportunity, always remembering that by so doing is an easy way to save for victory..i%

(g) Welfare Comforts Fund. —There are now 120 employees serving in H.M. Forces, each one of whom

receives a parcel once a month. On behalf of the'Comforts Fund Committee it is desired to express thanks

to the members for their gift of f100 which, together with the ready response of employees, has enabled the

Committee to send these parcels. Up to date 473 have been despatched at a cost of 2106 19s. 4d.

For and on behalf of the Directors,

JOHN E. HARRISON, Secretary

To the Members, DIRECTORS' REPORT.(a) We beg to submit to you the Quarterly Report and Cash Account. The total amount received for

goods sold during the Quarter is ft319,060 8s. 3d., being an increase of E54,544 6s. I I+. compared with thecorresponding period last year. 562 persons have joined the Society during the Quarter, 495 have withdrawn, and 30 forfeited as per rule, making the present number 30,616.

We recommend an interim discount of ls. 3d. in the fh on members' purchases.

(b) Appreciation of Services.—Nine months ago we expressed our appreciation of the services renderedby Managers and Employees, who so willingly volunteered and gave up their time to become proficient inthe various A.R.P. duties. It is now desired to express our grateful thanks for continued loyalty and servicein this sphere of the Society's activities.

(c) Mutual Aid.—It has been- decided to contribute at the rate of ld. per R of Sales for the year 1939,to the Mutual Aid Fund inaugurated by the Computative Union Ltd. No Society can now daim to be

'

remote, much less immune, from enemy action and the consequential damage. This fund will assist thosesocieties which suffer damage and loss owing to the war and the prevailing conditions due to hostilities. The C.W.S. will contribute to the Fund ld. per ft. of its Sales to those societies contributing to the scheme.

(to Re Registration for all rationed commodities commenced on Monday, 8th July. Members whoregistered with this Society durutg the first period of rationing have enjoyed dividend on their purchases. This factor, in conjunction with the excellent service which the Society offers, provides the greatest possibleinducement to all members to register with their own Society for their rationed commodiries.

(c) Prices of Goods Act, 1939.—This Act came mto operation on 1st January, 1940, and is an anti-ng;='-'"l'-';-.i'profiteering measure. It is designed to restrict the net profit per article to that which prevailed in August,

""',1939. With sharply rising prices its effect upon Co-operative Societies will be to make it more difficult tointain normal rates of dividend per fh of trade. No allowance is made for the inevitable fall in prices at

,.' '"

he end of the war, which will have to be borne by the retailer. The Act is one of some complexity, and the:-"wradministrative difficulties are considerable. ~ continue to rise under many heads, in particular'

with regard to war wage increases, increased Income Tax, A.R.P. charges, War Risks Insurance, and theadditional taxation of the recently-introduced Budget.

(J) Transport. —Early in July the Military Authorities impressed-several of our motor vehicles. It is'almost certain that before this report reaches the members more will be taken. This may mean a seriouscurtailment of our delivery services, in which case we ask members to assist by carrying their purchases

To the Members.DiRECTORS' REPORT.

(a) We beg to submit to you the 158th Half-Yearly Report and Balance Sheet. The total amountreceived for goods sold during the half year is Ji.655,487 15s.Qd. , being an increase of f97,992 6s. 4d. comparedwith the corresponding period last year.

The net surplus on the half year's business, after allowing for all expenses, depreciation, and interest, amounts to fi58,221 7s. 2g., and after deducting the payments as per Surplus and Deficit Account, leavesa balance of f131,266 la. 5'., which we propose to dispose of as follows:~5, 500 as discount on Members'

Purchases at ls. 5d. in the R, f384 3s. for Educational purposes, R4,000 to Dividend Equalisation Fund,

~1,000 to Reserve Fund, and R38t 18s.5'. cerned forward to next half year. 1,111 persons have joined the" society within the half year, 906 have withdrawn. and 52 forfeited as per rule, making the present number 30,732

(h) Fire Watchers. —Under this new Defence Order a fire watcher must be present at all times in premises.

where more than 30'pere'o'iis work *, also, irrespective of the iiumber of persons employed therein, the order

applies to premises the whole or a'ny part of which t's used as'a warehouse, of capacity exceeding 50,000 cubicfeet. A large part of our premises are involved, and this will entail an additional expense to the Society.

—c(c) Mutual Aid.—'Three months ago It' w'asv decided to join this Fund, and the Co-operative Union was

notified to this effect. Unfortunately, the decision to subject the Fund to Income Tax made it impossible

for the scheme to function. The whole matter is being reinvestigated, and possibly fresh proposals may arise.

There is no doubt that such a fund is necessary, and until a new scheme is promulgated, societies should

continue to help each other in cases of necessity. In a speech on 8th October, the Prime Minister indicated"'

"%+i

the Government was introducing a compulsory insurance plan, which will operate retrospectively from the

beginning of the war. Plant and machine as well as buildings, are to be covered. The BiII coverm(I the.scheme has bee

(d) purchase Tax.—The Bill embodying this tax has, with a few modifications been passed into law

The tax, which operates from 21st October, amounts to one-third of the wholesale value of certain goods

classed as luxuries, and onewixth of the wholesale value in other cases. Among those taxed at the full mte

are many articles which cannot be dassed as luxuries: furniture, china, cutlery, and domestic cooking

appliances, to name a few. The main bulk of this tax will faII upon the middle and working classes.

effect will be to raise the price of the artide by the amount of the tax, and the same amount of surplus

available for dividend will have to be spread over an inflated total of retail sales.

(c) Red Cross Fund (Agricultural Society).—During the period under review a subscription of 525

has been paid to the Agricultural Society's Red Cross Fund. You are asked to confirm this action.

(I) Quarterly Meetings. —Owing to the blackout restrictions and sparse attendances, it has been decided

to cancel the November, 1940, Quarterly Meetings in the country districts. Arrangements have been made

for representatives from these Branch Local Committees to attend the Lincoln meeting on Saturday afternoon,

16ih November. For similar reasons and the probability of air raid warnings the time of this meeting has been

brought forward to 2-30 p,m.

(g) Bakery.—The Bakery Department has secured a large contract for the supply of bread to the Military '-, '

Authorities. There is great difficulty in obtaining the necessary extra staff, but as these are obtained the'"-.

proportion of delivery is being increased and, it is expected, will ultimately double the bakery output.

(h) Air Raid Damage. —We regret to report that the Society has not entirely escaped the result of enemy ';:

action. The house of one of our managers has suffered severe damage from an'incendiary bomb, necessitating ~ir

repairs which almost amounts to reconstruction. It is, however, pleasing to know that no casualty resulted. t*

notice the following hours will(i) Curtailment of Shopping Hours. —From 4th November until furtherbe put into operation.
