Hydration

Taking in fluids so that the body functions properly.

• A male’s body needs around 3.7 liters of fluids a day to stay hydrated, a female needs 2.7 liters.(16,11 cups)

• Water doesn’t have to be the only thing you drink to stay hydrated.

• A person’s hydration needs are dependent on certain factors about them.

• As we go throughout the day, we lose water just by breathing and sweating.

• The balance of water determines how well our body functions will perform.

Dehydration

• Dehydration is when your body is using too much or losing fluid.

• Some symptoms of dehydration include fever, weakness, and inability to sweat.

• Extended periods of dehydration can lead to more serious problems.

Water Soluble SubstancesVitamins & Nutrients

• Because water is a carrier, vitamins and nutrients are able to be added for consumption.

• Vitamins B and C are common water soluble vitamins.

• Vitamins such as A,D,E, and K are fat soluble.

The World & Water• Around 70% of the world is covered with water, although most is salty or contaminated.• Having a reliable source of fresh

water is necessary for well being.• Water is a natural cleaner and

helps our environment keep clean.• Because of the water cycle, we can

have a closed and constant system.• Less than one percent of water on

earth is actually usable by humans.

Interesting Facts• By the time you feel thirsty, your body has lost over 1% of its total water amount.

• Weight that someone loses directly after physical activity is weight from water, not fat.

• Water dissolves more effectively than any other liquid.

• Soft drinks, coffee, and tea, while almost entirely made of water, contain caffeine which can prevent water from travelling around the body.

• Drinking too much water quickly can lead to water intoxication, which offsets the balance of water in the brain.
